Common issue with the AKG K702 Headphones where one ear cup cuts out and doesn't work. It's an easy fix if you're bad at soldering like me :]

THANK YOU. I've had a pair of these sitting in storage for probably 5 years now with one ear broken and got no help from AKG but thanks to this video I was able to just get inside really easily and find that one yellow wire was broken. Was about to finally bin them. 🙏🙏🙏

Isn't the internet wonderful. AKG702s failed yesterday after three years of daily studio use. Searched for a repair method and found this video today. Repair took 10 minutes with a piece of stripped microphone cable (thin, multistrand and even red!). Thanks for posting this. Robert @ URHQ

hey! I've had mine for 3-4 years now. since a few weeks the left ear has been cutting off or quieter. I changed the cable, removed the earcuffs to clean them, nothing, then found your video. The soldering joints on mine are wrapped in heat-shrink stuff, which made me unable to check them, but is also likely a good design change to fix that particular issue! there was some dust on the inside end of the mini-XLR port, I cleaned it, and it seems to all work fine now. maybe it was bridging the connections or something. whatever, I think it's good, and good to see they also updated their design to fix the de-soldering issue!

Man I had these sitting in a bag in my closet for almost 6 years. I opened up the right side and the red wire was disconnected. I don't have a soldering gun so I just took some more wire and "braided/wrapped" it in back to the solder point. It freaking works! Thanks so much.

Same issue. This worked. While it was in warranty, I had been sending my K701 in for warranty repair, but this was the first time fixing it myself. The warranty repair shop had glued the white wire to the housing, possibly in an attempt at strain relief. When it broke this time, it detached in a deeper, different place in the headphone instead of on the posts where yours broke.

Huge design flaw. I have the k7xx, same designed cup. I fixed it once last year and it broke again today! Just fixed a few hours ago actually. I added some hot glue around the solder joints to give them some more support.

Actually this is a problem a lot of manufacturers do. They depend on the solder joint to act as the lock. Solder joints alone are too stiff. No flexing, which is why the wire breaks at the bond. Flexible style Glue should always be added to relieve stress on the solder joint and to absorb vibration and shock. Hot glue should be good enough. Silicon can also be used.

I spent a good 25 minutes trying to figure out how these came apart before stumbling across your video. ^_^ Definitely earned my subscription haha PS: the issue isn't really the multi core wire. The issue is they never accounted for the cup moving around causing fatigue of the wire. They should've put in a wire clamp or some other strain relief into it. Kinda disappointing on AKGs end.

This is a very timely video for me... I bought a B-stock pair of these off Thomann to try, and there was no sound in the right side. My white wire was hanging loose. I don't have blobs of factory solder like yours though, my red and white wires seem to just be pushed into slightly bigger bits of black wire... no sign of any solder that I can see. I just pushed the white wire into the black bit it seemed to have come from, and now I have sound... Now i can actually try them out and decide if I want to keep them. Thanks for telling me how to actually get inside them.

Same works for K712 Pro. Mine had stopped working on the left side (the one that connects to the cable). Struggled a bit with getting the cover off but once I got it off I noticed the yellow wire was disconnected. soldering it up was simple and quick and now it works again. Edit: To get the cover off I had to pry it off using a flathead, would've been cool to see it in the video, the most difficult part IMO was getting it off the frame of the headpiece, but with some careful force it wasn't too difficult.

thanks for the video that silver outer cover is the hardest part of repair. yes same problem AKG K-612 Pro >>> 2 month old - contacted thomann for return/repair, just told them the model and on chat to after sales service and they forwarded me a RMA via email without blinking an eye- seems pretty common - saw 3 or 4 week delay for repair noted in the email.... so decided to do repair myself, I had second thoughts because they cost me 115 euro and were in warranty, diy repair takes 5min so worth the risk. It was easy enough but the way the terminals on the speaker side are its tough to access with solder iron - I had to de-solder from the headband posts to comfortably access the pins on speaker side. If you do the repair start de-soldering at least one of the wires on headband post then do the soldering the speaker side wiring and running it through the openings the plate then its easy to solder onto the pegs on the headband.

The trouble you'll run into if that wire has to move is that copper, while malleable, will work harden and eventually sheer. This is why multistrand wire is normally used in such applications (I could go into details here but suffice it to say it's essentially more flexible). You'd be better off getting some better quality (multistrand) wire, maybe a little thicker and also longer wouldn't hut either and putting some heatshrink (or something) around the where the wire is soldered to the terminal so the wire won't flex right at that solder join. (Just my two cents.)
@simoncossettini9680
@simoncossettini9680 2 жыл бұрын
kind of amazes me that on a +120 euro headphone and more expensive models that after 2 months it fails...I am no engineer but I can see clearly that this would be a weak point with the movement and like many things we buy now a minor increment in wire / component quality would remove a lot of the failures.

I paid an utterly obnoxious amount for these AKG 702 (so called "Anniversary Edition") from Dawsons Music in Manchester a solid 8+ years ago - somewhere in the region of £300 - I don't think they've ever retailed for that much lol ... bad decision on damn pain killers.... either way, even at £100 it's no good that they're so fragile. I really question the quality of these cans in general. The tacky plastic that connects the headstrap and the cans has snapped on both sides, the pieces of string (literally that's what they've used!) that are supposed to maintain rigidity are just limp ... as one would expect from pieces of string, and the ear phones have super fragile wiring. Terrible. I do appreciate the video though... I can revive them at least I suppose 👍🏼
