The pins are numbered 1 - 4 for a standard balanced setup it is Pin1 L+, Pin2 L-, Pin3 R+, Pin4 R-

if your willing to deal with red and a slightly different, more extreme v-shaped sound profile then k7xx's in red exist, I actually ordered them 5 days ago and they came today. (again, they're k712's in red with a better v-shaped sound IMO.)

Anything that is a similar thickness will be fine - we would probably use stranded hook-up wire 22-26 awg is probably a good thickness for that kind of thing

The main reason for going for a 3 pin is that you can get cheap standard cables that come with 3 pin - 4 pin ones normally have to be custom made. So if in the future you need a chap extra long cable from some reason - 3 pin will keep the cost down

@@CustomCans I've already ordered them, I decided on the 3 pin for ease of getting replacement cables if I ever need one.

I do not know for certain but it does probably just have 3 wires in the cable

Yes, you could measure the resistance between all the connections the pins you have used for L+and L- should read roughly whatever you headphones are rated at, the same for R+ and R- and then there should be no connection between any of the other combos. SO you should not read anything if you measure between any of the R pins and any of the L pins.... best to check all the combinations in-case you have a short

@@CustomCans Yeah I have a slight gap issue on both sides. I believe it needs the tabs that were on the removed piece. Is it possible to implement the tabs in your 3D print file for the conversion kit?

There is not a huge difference - as they no longer share a ground wire you get better channel separation. It is more about the amp - some amps only have balanced outs or perform better when used balanced. This gives people the option of using these headphones with those amps or players. If you have a nice single ended amp there is no need to do this mod

@@CustomCans excellent mod kit, definitely going to try my hand at it. It would be great if you could offer this as an unbalanced version, i.e. with 3 pin socket and plug.

K702 sounds a bit wider, more analytical and dryer sounding, the k712 have a slightly shallower soundstage, a smoother more pleasant sound signature and superior build and comfort. Both great

@@millenwagon I bought them 712 that is. Had them for couple of weeks, bought he400se like them better after getting use to sound, sent 712 back, just bought sundara and now one is going back or both cos I got my eye on Edition XS. Hmmm..... Expensive hobby, that all I can say.

@@pajda102 expensive hobby that can get out of hand very fast! I had the edition XS and whilst they are better than the k712 the k712 sound more natural and have a better soundstage. I sold the XS because the k712 do more things better, and hifiman qc always worried me.

@@millenwagon I definitely have the GAS (Gear Acquisition Syndrome)! I'm going to do this mod on a pair of K701's, and then I'll definitely be hunting for those 712's!

@@CustomCans Shame but I understand. The problem is the only cheap way to get parts made these days cost effectively is to have them made in China and that approach is out of reach for most smaller companies.

Getting things manufactured in china is not too hard but there is lot of R&D to design and test the new part so... Probably about £1000 worth of time and materials on Design, prototyping and testing, £500 to buy a used pair of K812 to do the testing. On low volumes, each part including the new socket and the labour to do basic assembly and packaging would probably cost around £20 then postage and returns would probably add another few quid. If we sold them for £35 each we would have to sell over 100 to break even. Being that they are quite expensive headphones and that most people would probably not be comfortable modding them, I don't think we could sell enough to justify the time and money. But... once we get to a million subscribers on youtube, I promise, I will make the K812 part ;)
