Yes, it doesn't differentiate between good or bad minerals. It will take out both. but since we have a heavy nutrient rich soil layer and the activated charcoal only has an active life of 3-4 weeks, I doubt it will make a heavy dent in the micro nutrients. the main reason to use charcoal is to take out any harmful or toxic chemicals which might prevent the initial setup of beneficial bacteria, plants etc. Anyway, I haven't done much research on it as it didn't cause any issues in my first tank. :)

I too had a charcoal media in HOB filter I had earlier in a smaller tank, never made any difference, and plants and fishes thrived well there. I think charcoal will give a clearer water faster than without it.

@@runvisakh yes, the charcoal has a life of only few weeks. So I had good results because the initial smell etc was not there due to chemicals getting sucked out. By the time it becomes inactive, plants takeover the duty.... So I recommend using it for first e-4 weeks

Yes, it is still working fine. but it needs regular cleaning. 3-4 week orikkal ithu puratheduthu clean cheythillenkil block aavum. also little noisy compared to hang on back filter. so thinking of swapping it with a HOB filter (Easy to clean and low noise).
