The latest offering from author and philosopher Alain de Botton sees him focusing his steely glare on our troubled and confused relationship with the media. In The News: A User's Manual, the esteemed thinker examines how and why we are addicted to a never-ending news cycle. In categories ranging from politics to celebrity worship to weather and grisly murders, de Botton questions what we are really seeking in the news, and whether it does us any good.
With the proliferation of handheld technology, we are as a society more in touch with and more hooked on instant news gratification than at any time in our history. In The News, Alain de Botton takes specific examples of prominent stories and holds them up to the light to test their true worth. Can never forget the ex soldier and his children. I drive past it every day and remember. No one should ever be left to get to that state. Its just heart breaking. And all because of grief.

Love the talk about but have one question - the problem with the comparison between modern news system with the Renaissance churches is that human naturally has a fear of death. This fear had existed for thousands of years prior to religion and in a way gave birth to religion. So it was much easier for the church to build on this solid foundation and increase its influence, especially science was not that developed in contrast.

I watched a lot of de botton's speeches quite joyfully, but i couldn't enjoy this speech because of that upsetting news cover. It gave me watery eyes🖤💔

I generally like Alain but unfortunately the idea that Chomky is a conspiracy theorist is not the only batty thing Alain said during this lecture.
