I'm going to take a stab at this again. I had forgotten about this clip. I said something two years ago, but a few people responded. One of them didn't understand the difference between "your" and "you're" which is very sad, indeed. However, at the beginning of the interview Cavett remarked about Arkin's having been part of Second City. Perhaps that slipped by some of the viewers. This is a key point, you see Second City is a comedy sketch group ... They do comedy. Certainly what that implied was -- Arkin was trying to be funny AND Cavett was trying to be funny. Neither was trying to be rude. It simply didn't work out as well as they'd hoped ... Maybe that will clear things up for you.

I have nothing against the other celebs that were on this show but is this channel ever going to show the Dick Cavett shows where he interviews Jackie Gleason or Art Carney? How about any Honeymooners actors that were part of the main cast? These are rarities much like the other Dick Cavett ones.

You do not go over to a man and talk shit into his microphone on his show especially when you are so much bigger then he is. You have some humility and answer the questions. If you do not like the questions then show us how bright you really are and avoid or dodge the questions cleverly.
@wetlazer

Seth Myers brought me here, AND I can see perfectly well why Arkin didn't know what to say. A fellow named Rodale had JUST DIED on his show. The segment wasn't aired and he's asking Arkin what to do about a person dying. That's a damned difficult question in any circumstance, but this was an actor taking about acting. I could have killed BOTH of their careers. It's an odd segment. Poor Cavett and Arkin. You want to give both these guys a big hug.
@RockinDaBoombox
@RockinDaBoombox 5 жыл бұрын
Uh, Arkin is rude from the start. He brought it up. He makes fun of the death and talks about how airing it would have really gotten great ratings. If you think that deserves a hug, by all means...
@wetlazer
@wetlazer 5 жыл бұрын
@@RockinDaBoombox I think you're being VERY critical. I just looked and it was 23 seconds before Cavett began talking about a man having died on his show. It's quite difficult for you or anyone to discern how Arkin had been behaving based on 23 seconds of a conversation. He might have been rude, OR he might have been TRYING to be funny. It amazes me how ALL of you think you can know what Arkin was thinking and doing based on 23 seconds. That's really quite something.

In the description, this Arkin interview was in 1979, Rodale died in 1971. In my opinion, 8 years is too long of a time to say that Rodale JUST DIED before this.
