Alan Wake 2: Night Springs DLC reviewed by Tristan Ogilvie on PC. Also available on PlayStation, Xbox, and GeForce Now.
"Alan Wake 2: Night Springs is a compact collection of standalone stories that veer from entertainingly violent shootouts, to tense stretches of survival horror, before settling on and reveling in the utterly batshit craziness that makes Remedy’s multiverse of madness so keenly absorbing to explore. There’s admittedly not much new here from a gameplay perspective, and it feels like a bit of a tease to play as a version of Control’s heroine stripped of her special abilities in the second episode. Even so, the highs I felt during my short return to Alan Wake’s universe greatly outweighed the lows, and I’d gladly play through another collection of bite-sized side stories if Remedy ever decided to bake another batch. Could there be more Night Springs in the future? Hope springs eternal."

You stumble upon a review to a game, a game played through video. The review itself? Video. Playing on a screen but not a television. A screen installed on an all important communications device now reduced to entertainment as you poop… Is this truly the fate of technology or are you simply viewing the sad alternate reality through Night Springs?

Alan Wake is the only game you can’t get mad about a reviewer messing up the details for. The lore is so insane that it’s impossible for anyone to know and explain it in a reasonably long manner.

The glaring misunderstanding in this review is that you're NOT playing as Rose Marigold, Jesse Faden, and Tim Breaker - you are playing as actors in a TV show, written by Alan Wake, who all have the LIKENESS of Rose Marigold, Jesse Faden, and Tim Breaker. That's why they are not referred to with character names but as "Number One Fan" for Rose, "The Agent" for Jesse, etc. - why Alan Wake's character is referred to as "The Writer." So that's why you don't get Jesse's superpowers or service weapon - Jesse gets those when she goes to find her brother at the FBC. Since this is not her, and she hasn't done that, she doesn't get those in this DLC.

Looking at it through the multiverse lens, in DLC you are just another versions of Rose Marigold, Jesse Faden, and Tim Breaker in alternate realities. Since Alan is also "Master of Many Worlds" just like Door, his writings kinda materialize "ideas/thoughts/words into realities", i.e., turning ideation about these 3 individuals into alternate versions of them in parallel universe(s).

They aren’t cannon stories, they’re like what if’s meant to be tv show Episodes, in this case it’s not technically Jesse, if you notice all the subtitles have the name of the speakers as “The sibling””the waitress” “The actor” etc in the one with Jesse her “brother” is played by Alan wake, probably as if it was a cameo in the show, they all also start by saying “Teleplay written by Alan Wake”.

@@Lokihsr it's not really them it's versions of them from different realities, being warped by Alan in his attempt to escape the dark place they all meet alan at the end of their stories, and the 3rd episode goes more into the different versions of them and the different realities.

This game feels like it shouldn’t even be called Alan Wake 2. More of a spin-off than a sequel. Features just enough of him for marketing purposes, but otherwise has almost nothing to do with him. Total bait and switch.

Video game industry is much bigger than the Hollywood industry. It’s probably harder and can be more expensive to develop a video game. Some stories can only be effectively told through a video game rather than a 90 min movie.

The ONLY thing that bothered me about Alan Wake 2 was Alan's CONSTANT and INCESSANT acting aloof. Literally every scene he's in he's over-acting his confused and aloof reaction to the world he's found himself in. I'm playing like "yes, Alan... it's scaaaaary, confusing, and *gasp* unfamiliar! OH NO!"

1. There is a physical edition now. 2. That 'Epic check' definitely helped a lot for this game. Since it wouldn't even exist without it. Epic allows developers to keep a much larger cut of the pie as well. I'm definitely a Steam player, yes, but the fact that Steam wants so much of the cut is rather problematic.

Jesse Faden is a character from another game: Control. The story is a "what-if" she started in Alan Wake instead of starring in Control. She's already an addressed character, and even appears in the main game on the TV during a scene with Tom Zane at the Oceanview Hotel, which also appears in Control.

It's like art, not for everyone's taste. If what you look for in a videogame is action and fast-paced combat you won't like alan wake 2, but that doesn't mean is overrated, it excels at what it was meant to be, a horror inmersive story-focused videogame. Plus it was really original, we never saw anything like it before. If story-driven games didnt have their fanbase, they wouldnt be produced anymore. Some people call them "walking simulators" as a meme, and it's okay, everyone has their opinion and taste. A lot of people hate on COD, fortnite and minecraft, still they're succesfull. Every game and genre has its fanbase. Even if Alan wake 2 is a "walking simulator", it is one of the best of them.
