I'm seeing this race for the first time. Alan Webb was really impressive here, as he was the whole of his 2007 season, with the exception of the World Championships. His times from 800m to the mile are comparable with Coe's. Actually, if Coe hadn't run a fine 3:29.77 in 1986 when he was five years past his peak 1981 season, then Webb would be over 1.4 seconds faster than Coe over 1500m. Webb's time here of 1:43.84 was Coe's mean time for 800m, with him running the exact same time in Oslo in 1984 just before the LA Olympics. The difference between them however is that Coe had a championship temperament. Webb was not a championship performer. That's why he doesn't have a single medal to his name. It's a shame really because from 3000m upwards to 10,000m his bests trunce Coe's times.

Wow. Reed took silver in the 07 World Championships and missed gold by 0.01 of a second. I am stunned Alan Webb could beat him in an 800. Webb was so talented but really never panned out in the major meets.

Yes it is. A 4:50 will let you finish top 3 in almost every middle school race you compete against (with some exceptions). The fastest middle school times in states like TX are typically 4:35-4:45 range.

@JacktheDaniels15 жыл бұрын
That's completely wrong, unless you're talking about the mile and not the 1500. For a typical 18 year-old md runner, a sub-4 1500 equates to about a 1:56/1:57 800. Of course, there are exceptions, depending on if the runner is more speed-oriented or more distance-oriented (the former will have a faster 800 and a slower 1500 relative to the latter).

Also, Webb's 5K time is an UNFAIR COMPARISON because Webb trains like a DISTANCE RUNNER. Reed is like KIPKETER, and is and trains like a pure MIDDLE DISTANCE RUNNER, so he doesn't have the long distance STAMINA. But if he wanted, he could train LONGER, slow things down, and MOVE UP to the long distances. And then he'd leave Webb with his SHORT STUBBY LEGS in the DUST. REED has more VERSATILITY since he was a great DECATHLETE and LONG JUMPER. I bet Webb couldn't jump 21 feet if he tried!

Ha, look at 1:11! Webb looks so funny pounding away on those short, stubby legs! I can't believe he can run so fast. Gary Reed, on the other hand, looks so smooth and like a gazelle. Too bad Reed lost...
@kdrast0315 жыл бұрын
well he never really had much of a kick from the beginning that hur him a lot
@dchartier114 жыл бұрын
Reed was originally a LONG JUMPER (he jumped over 7 meters in high school) and DECATHLETE before switching to the 800. Webb was probably a CRAPPY swimmer which is why he SWITCHED to LONG DISTANCE! Reed living in CANADA isa LEGIT explanation. He doesn't have many GOOD RUNNERS there to COMPETE AGAINST. He holds the CANADIAN RECORD so there aren't any CANADIANS to push him. Webb is more than 1.2 SECS off the AMERICAN RECORD and has SYMMONDS to PUSH HIM, so that's an UNFAIR ADVANTAGE.
@dchartier114 жыл бұрын
The 5K is NOT middle distance! Reed is a PURE 800 guy, like KIPKETER or CRUZ. Webb is a DISTANCE guy who FOCUSES on the mile and OCCASIONALLY goes down to the 800. It's EASIER to MOVE UP to longer distances than VICE VERSA. With Reed's INCREDIBLE speed, he could MOVE UP to the 1500 and do WELL. You say that Webb has more STRENGTH; well Reed has more SPEED and still has a BETTER 800 PR than Webb. Maybe Reed just feels like HAVING A LIFE rather than training ALL THE TIME like Webb!
@evb4mvp15 жыл бұрын
i wasnt good at all, i could just barely break 6 tho in the 800 i was in the mid 2:30s which is somewhat respectable, to me at least.
@dchartier114 жыл бұрын
It doesn't matter if Reed SOMETIMES runs against international guys. He still DOESN'T HAVE a lot of guys in his HOME COUNTRY to TRAIN WITH or RUN AGAINST. All he's got to run with are POLAR BEARS and CARIBOU! If he were in America and had INCENTIVE to run FASTER, he'd have the AMERICAN RECORD too! And I bet Reed could break 13 in the 5K if he TRAINED for it, TOO, which Webb couldn't even WISH FOR! Since Reed could break 45 in the QUARTER if he tried, slowing to 62 a lap is NOTHING for him.

@dchartier114 жыл бұрын
First, Reed wasn't SMOKED by Webb. He lost by LESS than 0.2 of a SECOND! And he BARELY beat Reed in the LAST COUPLE METERS. So that's NOT being SMOKED!!! Second, this was the year Webb was AT HIS BEST with his mile AR and 1500 PR. He was TRAINING INCREDIBLY HARD that year, MORE than Reed. And you CAN'T SAY that anyone would win at 1500 or 5000 if he TRAINED! If I trained my ASS OFF, I couldn't beat Webb or Reed at those distances. And NEITHER could you. So DON'T exaggerate!

@KTD8229114 жыл бұрын
How is it easier to move up than to move down? Maybe on terms of being an average joe, because anyone can do a 16 minute 5k. Though not on terms of Olympic caliber, because endurance is harder to hold onto than speed Alan Webb has endurance and speed, so your points also aren't valid. Not only are you still on the hypothetical issue, but Webb is a fast 800 runner and neither of the two are moving down from the 800 Reed doesn't have what you're trying to describe, though Webb does have it.

Reed has professional training because he is a professional athlete. He runs against international guys more than he runs against his local Canadian friends. He goes to HUGE meets, not the local road races that you're trying to claim. He has the money to afford this. Olympic caliber athletes are supposed to perform at their best and with the best. Canada is right next door to America anyway. He's raced Alan Webb already, so he has raced against tough competition. Your excuses are lame.

This is such a CHEAP WIN for Webb! The only reason Webb beat Gary Reed is because he TRAINS HARDER. Reed has way more NATURAL TALENT -- just look at 1:11 where Webb looks so funny running on those short stubby legs while Reed moves so GRACEFULLY and LIKE A GAZELLE. And remember that Reed is the CANADIAN RECORD HOLDER so he doesn't usually have much competition, but Webb isn't the American record holder so he usually has better people to run against. Anyway, Reed is still the BETTER RUNNER!

And WHAT has Webb done SINCE his AR? Huh? Argue all you want, but just looking at RUNNING STYLE you can tell from Reed's GRACE and POISE that he's more NATURALLY TALENTED. Webb only has more ENDURANCE because he TRAINS HARDER. If Reed trained like THAT, he'd be done to a 3:44! Webb wil NEVER do that!
@dchartier114 жыл бұрын
Also, Reed has more NATURAL TALENT than Webb. His stride is SMOOTHER, he has more 400 meter LEG SPEED, and he has a BETTER 800 meter PR despite TRAINING LESS. And if Reed REALLY WANTED to run the MILE, he could EASILY beat Webb. So who do you think is BETTER now, huh?
@decadyne14 жыл бұрын
You don't know Wilson Kipketer. It's obvious to everyone reading this post. Does Wilson know your obsession with yourself, Gary Reed? Why DO YOU type LIKE THIS? Have a great day, Gary Reed!
@dchartier114 жыл бұрын
Ha, SO clever. I FORGOT to laugh, RACKETER!
@dchartier114 жыл бұрын
I'm NOT giving WHAT IFS! I don't know WHY you think that. Are you INSANE? So how about THIS. Reed has run a 46.4 400. That takes NATURAL TALENT and GREAT LEG SPEED. How fast can WEBB run the 400? Maybe he can BREAK 48 if he had the GUTS to try? That's why Reed is SUPERIOR in the 800. Plus. Reed has a BETTER PR in the 800 than Webb despite NOT training as hard.
@KTD8229114 жыл бұрын
That comment about having a life is just stupid. But who knows? That might be why Webb is better 800 through 5k is mid distance, and the 1500 definitely is mid distance. You're obviously in high school. I'll go with your logic though, so Webb is NOT a mid distance guy, though he can still run the same 800 time as Reed? LOL!!!! Strength is what's more important, especially when you already have speed. Webb has just as much speed, and he outlasted everyone on this race. Webb is pure mid distance
@dchartier114 жыл бұрын
I'm NOT making excuses. I'd like one person here to TRY to the PROVE that Webb has more NATURAL TALENT or LEG SPEED than Gary Reed. Oh, and Reed is WAY WAY better looking than Webb, too. Maybe irrelevant to running, but yet ANOTHER WAY that Reed is SUPERIOR to Webb!
@decadyne14 жыл бұрын

@dchartier114 жыл бұрын
Like I'm going to tell YOU who MY sources are! Let's just say I KNOW people with INTIMATE knowledge of this... You DIDN'T SAY professional runners, you said "ANYTHING" (i.e., anyone). Don't MAKE UP excuses NOW! And you couldn't say this about ANY professional runner, anyway. For example, there's NO WAY that Dathan Ritzenhein could beat Webb or Reed in the 800 -- he DOESN'T HAVE THE LEG SPEED! And I don't PRETEND you could beat Webb or Reed. Or else give your NAME amd PRs (with races)!

@dchartier114 жыл бұрын
No, YOU don't know MUCH about track! I know ENOUGH to know that this was a CHEAP WIN by Webb who has PATHETIC leg speed and gets by with HARD WORK, which is ADMIRABLE, but doesn't compare to Reed's NATURAL TALENT. I'm telling you, put Webb in a race against COE or KIPKETER or CRUZ and he'd be SMOKED so bad it WOULDN'T BE FUNNY! Webb should move up to the 5000 or even the 10000 if he wants to HAVE A CHANCE to be big on the INTERNATIONAL SCENE. Hahahahaha!
@KTD8229114 жыл бұрын
Also, it's already proof that you're full of shit because you claim that Reed would be victorious over Webb IF he did the mile and 5k. Webb has more versatility due to the fact that he's a pure mid distance runner with more endurance than what Reed has. He has speed and strength that he's already trained for. Who cares what Reed would do IF he trained for it? How would Reed leave Webb in the DUST in the mile and 5k, even though Webb has more endurance with the same 800 time?
@Jmsheridan9116 жыл бұрын
haha your pretty slow
@KTD8229114 жыл бұрын
Lol, explain how Webb doesn't have natural talent. He was originally a swimmer. Reed living in Canada isn't a legit excuse, it's a bullshit excuse. It doesn't matter anyway because Webb just did this 1:43 800. How does he not have natural talent when he's a sub 14 minute 5k runner, and he can still do the 800? He's multi talented, I definitely say Webb is better than Reed.
@KTD8229114 жыл бұрын
LOL jumping 21 feet is high school shit Thus, Webb trains like a mid-distance runner because he is a mid distance runner. A 5k is a mid-distance event; it's not that long of a race. What is your logic based upon? You're saying the same thing over, and over. No excuses, I want proof of what Reed has done. Webb does the same 800, with more endurance. How would Reed leave Webb in the dust? Webb even beat Lagat. Oh btw, Webb was trained by a high school coach. He's a pure mid distance runner.

Lol, wrong. Reed gets Olympic training. Argue about the hypothetical nonsense all you want. Nobody cares what you BET Reed could do, that's just like saying I could bench press 500 pounds if trained for it Fact is, Webb has done low 13 minute 5ks and his 800 time is right on Reed. What are you trying to prove on natural talent? Webb is the more versatile runner and it shows Give evidence of what Reed has DONE, not what he COULD do. None of that "Reed could do a 3:30 mile if he trained."
