The song is a tribute to Elvis. Light rock with a blues undercurrent. The bass line is similar to that of Bad To the Bone, and plenty of other blues songs.

I was born in Memphis in the hospital Elvis passed away at. We have a photo of me and my two sisters standing outside the gates of Graceland when we were small. My mom also almost got ran over by Elvis on his motorcycle while she was trying to cross the street when she was a young working lady. She said he was very sweet and apologetic. My parents were huge Elvis fans! 💜 They named me Lisa Michelle, but people always assumed I was Lisa Marie after his daughter! 😂

I lived in Memphis from 1972-2008. I remember when Elvis died (I was 17). It broke on the news that afternoon after I got home from school. My mother was taking a nap. I woke her up and told her and she started to cry. This song came out many years later but to me it's obviously about Elvis because of the references to "love me tender" and the slow southern style. Also the fact that for some reason, people started painting portraits of Elvis Presley on black velvet fabric. Tacky, but very popular in the aftermath of his death. Alannah has a fantastic, bluesy voice with a touch of smoke and grit, yet soft when necessary. Great vocal range, too. Thanks for reacting!

Elvis was the best friend i ever had in my entire life. we met when i was 17 yrs old. I won a radio show contest and the prize was a day with Elvis but our friendship lasted past that one day in time. All the memories of my friend are tucked safe in my heart forever. i saw him numerous times he was amazing he was not only my friend but a big brother as well. I never will get over his death it haunts me everyday seeing him in video's dancing and singing breaks my heart because i know he is not here anymore my mind understands but my heart never will, i saw him a few weeks before he passed he said kiddo everything will be okay i said E. nothing will ever be okay again, i was crying so hard he gave me a little kiss on the cheek and said i love ya kiddo always remember that okay i said love ya too E. that was the last time i saw my friend alive again. I walk past Graceland everyday without fail. Anyway i loved your reaction i hope you will watch more of his music videos love from Memphis Tn.

@garychurch938
@garychurch938 3 жыл бұрын
@@footloosewill5569 yeah man Black Velvet does not refer to his hair or a shirt that he wore that someone says was Black Velvet, on his first black and white stage appearance Bing the shirt that his mom made for him yes he did wear a velvet shirt that his mother made for him but the only people who knew what color that shirt was were the people in the audience because it was broadcast in black and white, but it had absolutely nothing to do with the song Black Velvet. Black Velvet refers more to his like the song said Slow southern style and the way he had about himself unless he was wound up on stage, he had a very quiet demeanor and was very polite very dangerous looking, as the song reference Black Velvet in that little boy's eyes. Black Velvet whiskey has always been known for its smoothness and advertised as something that was really easy to get close to but like most whiskey take a swallow of it and you find out that as alluring as it may seem it will bite you. How people can say it's because of his hair color or his mother's hair color or shirt that he wore on a black and white TV program are just completely missing what he did was about. I mean the guy was like watching a volcano that you just knew was about to erupt but you just didn't know when. Although I don't really blame anybody because the reaction to that song was just goofy to me sorry to say it but it was Goofy. I explained that the previous comment on here.

When it was introduced, the reference to Elvis was obvious to all. They used to use velvet as wall decor. Maybe the 70-ish. Paintings on velvet. Yes, Elvis was a popular image to put on velvet. There is enough in the song to say "Elvis"....Memphis, "new religion", mamma's baby, little boy smile. At the time, we knew it was about Elvis

I know I'm going to get slammed for this but I just had to come back on say that she was the original singer of the song it's just that she recorded it in the 80s but then re-recorded it and re-released it in 2007 I guess it was to commemorate the anniversary of Elvis Presley's death. And at that very same time I had a velvet painting of Elvis, and it was awesome. From what I understand that inspired the song. Although she hit the nail right on the head. And she took a big chance recording a tribute song at that time to Elvis Presley.
