This flight was all new stuff to me. Surrounded by mountains, dodging weather, dealing with winds AND a short strip. I have a lot to learn! Welcome to Part 3.

Early in my flying experience I tried to land at Quartz Creek in my C150. The winds there are really weird and I did the exact same approach. The x-wind on final turned to a tailwind on short final as the wind made the corner up the valley. I found myself fast and high with all the flaps out. I went to do a go-around and nearly didn't make it over the trees, and then had to deal with the rising terrain. I learned a lot that day, mainly that you should always consider your options if a go-around becomes necessary. I usually land the other way now, towards the lake, to give myself more room to climb. Unless it is a strong wind towards the lake, but with the windsock tucked down below the trees, it's hard to tell what the wind is actually doing.

That's a good idea to always land toward the lake. Never really considered that.

Well I’m on 18 hrs of private pilot training and still struggling with landings in wind.. I’m not saying I’m happy that you misjudged your approach, but happy to see it could happen to a season pilot like yourself.. I learn so much off your videos..( it’s the little things) that help me out recognizing situations!! Thank you for a great video..

I didn’t know the first time you were in, but after part one posted it showed up in my recommended feed. KZfaq’s algorithms are dialed in apparently. The N-number jumped out at me while I was watching. That tail-heavy 172 is pretty distinctive too. Stop by the FSS next time your in town! Filming inside the building isn’t allowed without prior approval, but I’d be happy to give you the nickel tour and buy you a root beer in town.

I'm sorry, but I'm not sure I can stand much more of this. I'm Texan and learned to fly in Texas, but now I live in Alabama. I can't really complain since I have a wonderful 80 acre place with a mountain top runway to land my Maule on, but doggit I'm chomping at the bit to make it to Alaska. I'm just totally jealous. Oh, and as long as I'm dreaming, I want to be young again too.

We're our own worst critic when talking about our own landings. I also tend to come in a little high and fast for the same reasons you did when the wind is jumpy. Chris was so calm while offering little hints to help you along. You compared the landing to an airport in central Texas. Lago Vista perhaps ?

Early models of the 172 have manual flaps (lever is between the seats, I think). IIRC, electric flaps were introduced on the 172F model, and pre-selectable flap control on the 172N model.

One of the things I really like about your vids is your explanations. You cover a lot of info, and you are fast to point out your mistakes instead of glossing over them, or not mentioning them at all. One part of learning and improving on our abilities is facing our mistakes, owning them, and finding the grain of knowledge to help us improve and avoid the same in the future. I think you do that quite well.
