We bring you along with us on our trip to the Kenai Peninsula to fish the Russian River for Alaska's renowned sockeye salmon. We end the trip with a campfire at our cabin and share our fishing plans for the summer as well as a brief backstory on why we ended up choosing to lead this lifestyle.
Thank you for following our journey and commitment to lead a simpler life. We are incredibly grateful for your support that enables us to share Alaska with you!

And for anyone that reads these other than the host... yes... Living a life style. It is how we as a nation used to live. Homesteader, Trappers, Guides, Farmers, Ranchers, even Loggers and miners too to some extent were life styles not just "jobs" You took care of most of your own needs and what WE all need mostly is food. Followed by shelter. Blessed be the host to show the world through this medium that most anyone can do it, even today, if you will put in effort. I am actively moving away from the city and to more "taking care of myself". To anyone thinking about it let these people be your inspiration.

Great job/life you're doing there! Didn't read all the comments, it may have been mentioned, but I have big concerns about cooking on galvanized metal (warming bread on galvanized hailscreen) rack, not only for the Zinc burning off and smoking into the food, but the Lead that the strands of wire are soldered together with incinerating. Zinc melts at about 600F and vaporizes @ 1,500F. Lead melts about 350F and vaporizes @ 620F. Both are considered heavy metals, lead more than Zinc. Just an idea, check with mining/gravel plants in area, they always have 'burnt out' screens from the shakers, where dirt/gravel 'burn' a hole in screen where it impacts off the conveyor, but rest of screen is OK... About all they are good for now is scrap price by weight. When I worked at the mine we had stacks of old worn out screens. If you luck out you might find a stainless steel screen! I have several 18' x 24' stainless cooking grates with 1/8" to 1" openings. . Heavy wire ones for pots/pans and finer screens for grilling. Got snazzy and screwed metal around the edges so they wouldn't warp and they have held up well for over 20 years now. Make a couple depending on the size you're cooking for. The small pieces left over make great smoker racks, critter vents, etc, just cut to size.

Loved the intro - purple flowers with mountains in background. Nothing odd at all about the ways you’re using up the fish. I think that’s a big part of going off grid, or homesteading … nothing goes to waste.

What you say about the food makes so much sense. Spend your energy on what matters most. You COULD harvest your own salt for instance... but WHY? Putting up a high volume of fish is a better use of time & energy. Protein is pricy... focus on that. Its all about making wise choices. You guys have the right idea.

Fishermen share their stories so let me share mine with you. When I went to Alaska, I too went on the Kenai Pennisula, all the way to Homer. There I caught the limit of three halibut and a silver. I was thrilled, believing my husband, may he RIP, hooked the Silver for me! Anyways, I filleted the fish and caught attention. It was a half day trip, totally worth it. Just in case you get to Kodiak, ( I took the ferry), you can get the largest heaviest halibut without even getting on a boat. The spot ( I'm sure it's well known) is lined with sawdust, a mill once existed there and catching the fish is just heavy lifting, no fight. But very good. When halibut are smaller, they are tastier. I hope to go back someday, maybe I can get to the Russian River. But I have to say, I love halibut.

@@lifewithlarsandsusie8315 Yep! Halibut are HUGE and they don't fight but it is like pulling up a chevy engine. That's an exaggeration but it is a lot of work to pull them up and in. The best part is the cheeks. They are easy to cut and fillet, taking the meat off the bone sliding the knife down. You could have three and that could easily supply dinner for a couple for about a third of a year. six ounce is plenty per person per meal. Be proud and encourage because halibut is a treat, easy eating,. Try salmon too, as locals Alaskan Natives it's a staple, wtth fish camps and family time processing. It's a great way of life. I totally enjoyed learning about the seven or so tribes and their differences and their sameness. U of Alaska has their own website, lots of videos, recordings Alaska Native Knowledge Network, it was called .in 2005

This video really brought back the memories and I thank you. There is no finer eating than a freshly caught salmon or halibut or king crab but the fun has been taken away by all the tourists that have taken over the rivers on the Kenai and literally fished them out. Your being a new resident, I am sure you will see this in time but don't let that ruin your joy of doing what you like to do and going for the food you like to eat. I would not take for my experiences in Alaska and had it not been for the oil pipeline boom, I would still be there. Though I still have many of your videos to see, you are allowing me to relive a time that I hold dearest to my heart, I just hope you don't mind me making references to that period. Take care and stay safe!

Why would you want it firm? Sockeye isn’t mushy. And easy to over salt fish and over cook it

That’s a good trick if your fish has been frozen. If it’s fresh it should not need the salt to firm it up.

Working for your own food is not always easy but it's SO worth it. I always have a garden at home and it's so important to me to have that and not be too reliant on store bought stuff when it comes to vegetables and fruit. Many people look down on it, or look at it like it's a quirky hobby. But then it's good to remember that this is how people USED to live (raising animals, growing food, foraging) - before commerce ruined our perspective on things.
