I've grown up (34 years old) just kinda seeing Albert Brooks in movies and occasionally on TV, but just recently started to gain a real appreciation for him. Better late than never.

Yeah, I'm 57 and my introduction to Albert was the movie Broadcast News from 1987. It was at least a few years before I even learned he did stand up and is SO good at it.

I saw this episode when it first aired, when I was in grad school, and haven't seen it since. For almost 40 yrs now it has been one of my favorite comedy bits, in my memory. I only had very limited memories of the letters he used in conversation with Buddy--I remember 'X' and 'VD' very well. I had forgotten how he used letters that were close but not exactly the whole word, such as "i" for Hi and "s' for yes. So funny seeing it again all these years later. What a funny man.

Interesting! I wonder if he would have been able to see it. The Two Ronnies *might* have been viewable on PBS in the States then but probably not? He might have seen it if he travelled to the UK? It's not impossible but sort of unlikely. Would love to know more now that you've mentioned it.
