I'm, needless to say, very happy for you and your family I'm from Ontario and want all Canadians to reach their potential OIl is a difficult field to work in as global markets sometimes fluctuate for good and sometimes for bad, but we are all in this together We are Canadian and will get past this.

Can’t claim welfare or unemployment insurance never used food bank even though out of job right now.Businesses have closed down on daily basis in here ON too. I actually lost my hopes for future

I moved away from Alberta. I retrained in a non oil field at a Polytechnic in a different province. I was without my family for 2 years. I had a kid in between. It was very tough. I racked up student debt luckily I got a job straight out of school. Things are looking up now.

Aside from the guy plugging his book, it is nice to see there are no morons cropping up with ignorant comments that you usually see--at least so far. Maybe because their pea brains are not attracted by this topic. Sorry to hear about your situation. A marriage can have enough problems without the additional strains of no job.

Some of those people left their offspring behind here in Alberta while they had the continuity bias while believing we would always be doing well here. That is okay. Albertans are resilient. Albertans no matter what minority they are from know how to be co-operatve with the rest while being safety minded to help prevent loss of human life too. That is our take away from the oil boom which is going to last until kingdom come.

I got a good 3 years in Alberta, although I am now looking for another job. I'm sure I'll find something but maybe not as high paying. But, I managed to get a huge down payment on a house, owning a house in Alberta is huge, because houses are so expensive. Rental income is good, my renter pays pretty much the whole cost of the house for me. I can live on the cheap for a while. If oil comes back I'll be all over it again.

The people who never saved money and bought quads and boats and shit, and lived like rock stars are the ones who are screwed.

But can you return your portion of the transfer payments back to Alberta please?

There is some truth to those that didn't save. Most my oilfield career was driving an 84 Ford F250 RWD. Making repairs on the side of the road, sleeping in horrible conditions, etc. I have a 5 bedroom house, 5 vehicles, and debt free because I didn't finance everything. There is nothing wrong with those that spent money, as when you buy a boat, you are employing people that sell boats, or repair them, etc. I have no problem with oilfield guys buying 2nd or 3rd vacation homes, because they are employing people to build those houses.... The problem will always be the government, for not allowing our industry to compete. End the corporate and union welfare, and de-regulate so the smaller, more accountable oil companies in Canada can Compete against the monopolies.... and get our services to market so we are not losing 30% to the US.

Alberta has more industries than oil. Comments like that just show how the rest of Canada loves to kick us when we're down. We welcomed all of Canada with open arms during the boom, we let billions of dollars of our revenues leave the province to pay for have-not's. Now that we're in a rough spot, the true colors of the rest of Canada come out. We're only welcomed in Canada when we have jobs to offer and outgoing equalization payments for the rest of the country.

Start thinking about new industries to work in if possible just in case or think about a real possibility that will solve your future problems SEPARATION . There is very little downside and a huge upside to finally join with the USA and be rid of Trudeau and liberals once and for all. Enough of their indifference to Alberta , join the USA and watch Alberta grow like crazy with all kinds of american investment and besides it would be great to be able to go south for as long as you want. Hmm...Quebec's economy is diversified from fiance, pharm, aerospace, engineering and forestry. Quebec's Pension Plan has more money than Canada's. Quebec's budget is in a surplus while Alberta's in a deficit. Quebec is on track to fiscal balance. Now, there's talk the the government might lower income taxes (or the PST) for the first time in long time. Our health tax is being phased out in less than 3 years. The provincial Liberal government is doing it right slowly, but effectively. 40+ years of the same government did nothing to soften the blow from low oil prices. Yes, it is true that Quebec takes most from equalization payments, but it does it on a model that provides for its people whilst slowly lifting regulations in the market. Fiscal conservatism should be letting the market decide while saving for the future when it goes bad. Paying your bills in addition to putting money on the side.

Ottawa is the one that administers transfer payments. Provinces don't do any such thing. They never have and never will. Almost all of the previous Alberta Tory governments from the last 44 years did a good job of blowing extreme amounts of money on major messes of their own creation, right in their own province. The naughty boys and girls in the Alberta Tory cabinet didn't plan ahead. Waste, waste and more waste. Foolishly believing that oil prices would remain at top dollar levels.

And don't forget that Alberta laughed during the Great Recession and called Ontario a "Have Not Province."

It's not that simple. A single family detached home in the outskirts of Calgary starts at 450K even in this depressed oil economy. If you include your travel expenses back/forth to northern Alberta, business expenses, and other life expenses, how many years do you expect savings from your 100K job to last?

I worked in a little town called Rainbow Lake and made over $200 000 a year. Because it's such a small town, they also give you a family home to live in - a taxable benefit. A LOT of the people up there don't save and spend their money on their "toys". One guy had four quads, four snowmobiles, a travel trailer, a trailer for his quands and snowmobiles, a new diesel truck and a new jeep. Before I got a job in oil and gas, I was wondering why it was so hard to get a job in oil and gas. Well, in Rainbow Lake, there are about 4 family groups up there. Some people from one family group are married to people from the other family groups. Half of them are Newfies (not Albertans!) Any one is not related is "an outsider". The oil plant up there hired several people at the same time when I got hired because the company (I won't name it here) opened a new plant in Ft. McMurray. So they took experienced operators from several of their plants to put in their brand new plant and hired new people in the other plants. When the down turn came, "family members" didn't get laid off - just the outsiders. Oil and gas jobs in Alberta are very much for people who "know the right people" and not for other people. Fortunately, I had a good relationship with my previous employer so I was only out of work for a few weeks before I was working again. Yes, Canada needs oil and gas but the industry is full of nepotism. After having worked in oil and gas, I am frankly disgusted by the nepotism and general selfishness of people who work in that industry. (Jobs are only for the friends and relatives of those who already have jobs, no one else.)

@Andy Geee well all i can speak of is the people i met while i tried working up there and if anyone thinks they are over paid have never actually done the job. I tapped out after 6 months because it was to hard being away from my kid but i have never worked so hard in my life. 12 hour shift for 14 days straight and thats in rain, snow or heat does not matter and they have earned that right to live that life style and im pretty sure they didnt expect their own government to turn their back on them and also i meet more people who moved from other provinces for the work so it wasnt just people from Alberta who benefited from that oil patch, it was anyone in Canada that was willing to go out there and work

@Andy Geee fair enough but in fairness that can be said about any profession that you can make alot of money and you're only hearing about the ones that are bitching. Alot of rig guys i meet didn't live that extravagant life style and the ones that did where usally in the age bracket of 18 to 25. The one thing i dont agree with is the education part because i went to college and took out a student loan to work with troubled youth and i graduated and got on with the provience and if i stayed there i would have never got out of debt. So making big money shouldn't matter about college or university because i took just as much training before working on the rigs then i did in my 2 year college course

That's exactly what I did! I miss my Alberta days but I had to leave otherwise I would have been homeless! I now live in the east, making less money but with a roof over y head, food in my fridge, heat during the winter and an overall very decent job!

That's what I did I cant stand the prairies in the winter time if I'm not making any money there , I moved to the west coast at least there is more to life here that snowmobiling and freezing your nuts off.

Hard to extract. Lack of private investments. Hard to transport oil in a big geographic country. Cheaper to buy oil elsewhere.

@@sherry5455 Alberta oil require heavy dilution. It's carp oil. Hence only market is usa with refineries capable. Canada refineries are 70 years old...this has happened 3 Times now to AB...60s...80s....and now...they just don't get it and don't learn
