Love the Celica to come back. I think the GR86 has taken the affordable coupe role it had though. Final gen Celica was more an affordable coupe instead of a rival to the the Impreza etc. with both having rally pedigree. There were rumours Celica would come back as an SUV. Like Ford did with the Puma. I'd be heartbroken to be honest. Even if Toyota offered an ST equivalent ( GR ) version and went rallying with it like Ford. It looks like we will have to see what the GR Corolla is going to be like for now

If you have a look at Toyota's EV plans its possible one of their new EV's might be based on the Celica. They plan to release 20 EV's by 2025.

I think you're overreacting... Not to say Toyota isn't deep in the throes of a MASSIVE f*ckup, but they'll realize it and rename the GT86 within 3 model years, and I'm already counting.

The problem with bringing the Celica back is there's no reason to bring it back. The Celica's legendary reputation currently comes from it's rally legacy, but they currently they use the Yaris. Also, it wouldn't fit as just a fun car because Toyota 86

Honestly as far as marketing goes that’s how Toyota did good while also messing up. You don’t really need the car named after a 80s Corolla chassis anymore (GR86) now that a GR Corolla hatch is coming out. I also agree that the Yaris in ways should’ve been the Celica since it was primarily known for its rally heritage. They could change the 86s name to Celica and make it AWD. That way you have a AWD Celica and Subaru can have a 22b successor.

What Toyota needs to do and I could see it actually happening is bring back the Celica the MR2 and a fast version of the Corolla. Using sharing parts between the three models

@@MaddNomad1015 in my country the GR Yaris is available the GR Corolla is supposed to be coming for other markets. I really don't think cost of development is a valid excuse Toyota is a massive company with endless resources I have developed a good powertrain the G16E-GTS GR Corolla Celica and MR2

i loved my mk3 supra. i sold it in 2004, and after a few years i started to regret it. i still regret that. I got a 3000gt and it wasnt worth it.

I love my 2001 Celica GTS...I just wish there were more power oriented upgrades for the 2zzge motor. Ive done all I can do without forced induction and its a fun agile car. I just wish I had 60-100 more hp and AWD to make it that much more fun.

Also if you want awd you would have to get more power to be on same power level to wheels if it was only fwd. take it from someone that drives all drivetrains (FF,FR ,FAwd,MR, FMR)

brooo… i have the GT model with the 1zz & they slow as shit & they would set u back 5k-7k to turbo it with not so much power, so I found a 2jz with transmission for 6500👌

As someone who had an 84 Celica GT, 87 Celica GTS, and still has 3 85 Celica Supras, this video really hits home. Great job man.

That’s awesome, I’m 19 and just bought a 84 gt-s. It had bad compression on cylinder 4 so I’ve been doing my first engine swap with a 90s 22re from a pickup. The new engine has less than 90,000 miles. I can’t wait to get it back on the road. They are beautiful cars and it was fun to drive with basically 3cyl… can’t wait to see how 4 feels😂

The 4th gen and 5th gen Toyota Celica GTFour Turbo All Trac was the one car to defeat both the Subaru Impreza WRX STi and Mitsubishi Lancer Evolution, and yet its rally legacy is often only remembered for cheating engines. Despite the help from Yamaha and Lotus; by the end of its life in the 7th gen, the Toyota Celica was lesser than the Acura Integra, even the Honda Prelude. The Scion tC and Toyota Corolla XRS lived on, but neither outshined the Acura RSX and Honda Civic Si.

Their rally legacy has been updated is case you're out of the loop. They are once again the kings of WRC with Subaru and Mitsubishi replaced by Hyundai and Ford.

I love driving one of the different models that everyone skips over when they do one of the history of Celica video. In the Japanese market for the 5th Gen they had a GT-R 4WS trim that ran the 165hp NA 3S-GE and was FWD but had full time four wheel steering. The SS3 always seems to be forgotten as well in the 6th gen with the 200hp Red Top 3S-GE BEAMS engine.

"a certain brittish car show" wasnt using a factory petrol engne. it was a factory diesel engine. the reason the celica was kicked out of the WRC was: toyota changed the angle of the WRC mandated restrictor for all turbos. and was caught cheating when the WRC ordered a strip down of the engine (mandated)

I bought a used one fairly recently. Most of the internals are in great shape but every thing else is a major up hill climb as it was last in the hands of a tweaker. This poor car is just crying that it still has life! They rattle canned it, put some crooked ass racing stripes on it, did a really poor repair job on some body damage, quite a few dents, the rotors flanges in the back were busted from the hub part of the rotor, busted windshield, and I can keep going but you get the picture. I feel like I bit off a lot to chew. That's why I need to watch some videos like this hopefully for some inspiration! LMAO!

Very, very good video. I currently have a ST165 GT-Four with a modified Gen 3 3SGTE swapped from an ST205. It’s utterly terrifying to drive, but I would never trade it for anything else. The ST182/5 feels a tiny bit more grown-up, like a GT car… Would love to own one some day, but they’ve suddenly gotten very expensive over the last 3 years. :-(

St205 shoulda come out the factory with a 2.2l 5sgte option but like a 22b. 5s on a 3076r with fresh air antilag n meth is truly terrifying!!! 😎

Can you put model numbers and years on them? Nonenthusiasts don't understand those ST205 and GEN3 3sgte numbers. Basically what should I look for if I want to buy one?

@@teemcshanney8910 Sure! There are three generations of GT-Four Celicas. The first generation of GT-Four is the ST165, which is based on the 4th Generation Celica - built between 1986-1989. This was the car which Toyota won their first drivers championship in the World rally championship. The second generation GT-Four is the ST185, based on the 5th generation Celica - built between 1989-1993. This won three drivers championships, and two constructors championships in the WRC. The third GT-Four is the ST205, based on the 6th generation Celica - built between 1994-1999. This was the one suspiciously quick off the start line compared to the other competing cars in the WRC. It was found to have an very well engineered, yet very illegal bypass for the turbo intake restrictor and was banned by the FIA. The first generation 3SGTE engine was in the ST165, second gen 3SGTE was in the ST185, and third gen 3SGTE was in the ST205. They did make a fourth gen 3SGTE which Toyota used in the Japan-only Caldina GT-Four. All awesome cars. IMHO, the best of the bunch to buy as an appreciating asset would be the 'CS' or 'RC' edition of the ST185. I hope this helps

I want a GR Corolla so badly, but I love my Celica GT-Four ST205 I Imported from Japan two years ago. It really is the top shelf Celica and any Toyota fan needs to experience. There's no other car like it.

Wish I could, only that my country restricts importations, and the FWD Celica is like 10000 dollars, with the average fellow earning 200 a month, so there's that.

The GR Yaris also happens to be anywhere between 200 - 500 pounds lighter than the ST205 Celica GT-Four. A lot of people keep bitching that the GR Corolla will become too much heavier than the GRY, but it'll likely be right in line with the last GT-Four. Complete with all the modern performance tech and creature comforts.

Always thought of the Scion TC as the spiritual successor of the Celica T230. FWD, same wheel base and lug pattern making the wheels of the 2 cars swappable easily, has a hatch, and TC reminds me of "T"oyota "C"elica.

@@martin1649 : I can't call the 2AZ-FE engine that reliable; they are notorious for oil consumption issues. My daily driver is a RAV4 with that particular powerplant and I haven't been all that impressed with it. I think those issues went away when they went to the 2AR-FE, but it's enough to make me steer clear of the TC in the used market.

Dont buy the wrc homologation version that's like 45k. I just bought a st205 in the states for 18500. Only 75k miles

Just discovered your channel and loving the content! I’m rapidly consuming past output. Great production, fantastic archive footage and detailed presentation. If I have one criticism it’s that I’d like to see more time taken for each topic. You provide so much info in a rapid style that it can feel like you’re not giving yourself, and us, enough time to savour the details. Either make each episode longer or break up the topic into a mini-series of episodes. Just my humble opinion…

I grew up playing Gran Turismo & Sega Rally Championship when I was a kid. The Celicas, MR2s & Supras immediately caught my attention. I loved the 5th, 6th & 7th gens the most from the Celicas. Those were my childhood dream cars.

I owned a 2001 Celica GTS as my first car. Picked it up for 3k by some unknown miracle. I absolutely loved that car, but I screwed up and blew the motor up in the mountains a couple years after I got it. It handled great, looked great. was pretty damn comfortable and was able to hit double the CA freeway speed limit. What more could you want in a first car?

Great video, thankyou! The Celica has had a huge following here in Australia, and I even used to be a member of the Classic Celica Club of South Australia! The members still are very active in motorsport, using these cars in all disciplines!

There was also Twin Cam versions of the engines with twin side draft carbies available in the JDM GT models. The early twin cam heads also had Yamaha casting marks. The 2 litre 18RG and 1600 2T and 1800cc 3TG with 40mm Solex carbs come to mind, there was also EFI versions of those engines.

Proud owner of a 4th gen GT model, here in greece it came with the mighty 4AGE bigport engine. Even though it isn't rwd , it is more fun than some rwd I have driven (e.g. bmw z3 ) , because of its agility and low center of gravity (for the record , it is the second lowest chasis toyota ever produced , with the first being the 2000gt ). With some konis and a bigger tyre , works wonders

I had the 1974 LT 1.6 litre Celica, followed by the 2nd generation 1978 Liftback 1.6 litre. I upgraded the Liftback with Bilsteins. I loved both cars!

Yaris wheel base is too short and too much top end. Can still make a Celica a hatch without giving it hatch priority like the Yaris. I hope you people never work for a car company.

@@CarsnLemonsTV You are right. They don’t know anything about the cars though, they just fanboy. For example, GR Corolla is coming out and people say the GR86 is the true successor to the AE86 (yet it shares no relation to the 80s Corolla and has a ZN6/ZN8 chassis code). The GRC’s chassis code is chronological (E210) and is actually a Corolla. Lmao. With the Celica people wouldn’t mind due to the rally tech and purpose probably or just rename the 86. Toyota needs to reassess their lineup and marketing in my opinion. Everything just seems so backwards now

Had a 6th gen celica 2 months ago definitely one of the coolest, affordable comfort machines there is sadly lost in when some guy flew into it and totaled it beyond repair. Due to not having enough time nor money myself and with insurance not paying out enough had to leave the car behind. 🥺

The Celica is the chassis I grew up with. Two of my buds and me made a balls out Denver Colorado to Bremerton Washington endurance trip to be at a bro's wedding in a second gen Calty-design Celica. We made that trip in under 19 hours in the dead of winter 1988. One of us slept in the back with the seats down, one sat in the copilot seat keeping the driver on point, and one of us sat in the driver's seat keeping the long skinny pedal flat to the floor--rally style. On my shift, overdriving the headlights hilariously dangerously on a deserted stretch of I-80 I hit a mangled, roadkilled deer at I believe the high side of 100mph and we just kept going. Swerving would have been madness. Once, while sleeping, as we traversed Oregon in the increasingly thickening snow, I awoke to the Celica spinning out of control in the right lane and shoulder as a 18-wheeler passed us in the left lane. On the way back, I was copilot and the state troopers rolled on us. We pulled over and when my buddy was asked if he knew how fast he was going, said "Yes, sir, I do. 120." The only way he knew for sure was I was timing him from the mile markers. We got let go with a warning and we kept it down for the rest of the way home. I'll never forget that trip. A guy parked a sweet looking silver 4th gen Celica hatchback at the place I worked in the late 80s, and I spent some time checking it out--it was a great looking car. Futuristic and forward looking for the time. The first new car I bought, and my third car, was a 1991 Celica ST--not the best styling in the back, and not very powerful at 103hp, but a pleasure to drive with the notchy manual transmission. Now, I have a JDM 1992 ST185 Celica GT-Four with a carbon fiber CS Edition hood replica. I see none of these out there. Supras? Yes. Skylines? Yes. RX-7s? Yes. 300Zs? Yes. The Celica GT-Four (AllTrac) is a very pleasurable ride, and gets a lot of love. It's a good boi. People see it and then they realize what it is and then the conversation starts. Even nine months into owning it, I still poke my head out to look in the garage to check--yes, I still have one. I'm a rather silly amount into it, when everything from parts to services to tools and consumables and improvements are taken into account. Could Toyota have sold me a new Celica for say $35 to $40K? Yes. But they don't have one. They have a Subaru that they call the GR86. They have a BMW they call the Supra. The Yaris GR-Four is unavailable and unattractive. They're finally coming around to bring out a Corolla GR that looks to be something of a go-er. But no Celica. And that's just dumb, Toyota. A retro feel, comparatively lightweight, chip-light platform with a bombproof 200-250hp plant and 4WD would blow minds.

The Celica had different engines in different markets, here in Australia the original Celica TA22 came with an interesting 1600cc cross flow pushrod engine which were often changed into the twin cam 2TG and 3TG engine. I owned a couple over the years including a ST185 (GT4)

As an owner of a BEAMS swapped (lhd) Celi, I must agree. Always awesome when I meet people who realise what the BEAMS is, I wish there were a little more general knowledge on them outside of japan. Otherwise was a nice video.

@@asnhowl my dream car (and I'm not being dramatic, if o won lotto it's still my dream car) is an MR2 with a BEAMS. I used to have a 270ps turbo and it was amazing but the 200ps BEAMS is perfect for my driving ability. Plus love how it sounds. Enjoy your Celica as long as you can.

I have a mint condition 2003 Celica GTS. I'll post a picture of it under my community tab. I started with a 78 Celica, sold it 280k miles, grabbed a 93, then ordered a brand new 2000GTS in late 99, and about 2 years ago came across the one I currently have. If they ever drop another one, I'll definitely get it. I do think they'll bring the Celica back in about 6 years.

great content I on a 92 celica gt auto kniwn as the celica sx here in australia and a 1990 NA fairlady 300zx manual. love them both but the 300zx is always a nervous drive but the celica is bullet proof , you simply never think it could break sown ...brilliant car.

The Scion tC was awfully close to a Celica, though, and very affordable. The all-glass roof made me nervous, though the car overall turned out to be very crashworthy, at least with deer.

@@grug69 Isn't it more the size of a Corolla? There's a 2-door Camry called the Solara. So you're saying the tC doesn't even qualify as a sporty car except for the appearance? I never had a Celica, but I had been assuming I got the next best thing. I did like it all right. Around 10-15 years ago, I tried a few times to get a used 6th generation Celica, but every time I went to look at one, it would have some kind of fatal flaw.

I had a 1990 Celica GT-S... that car was a built like a tank. Barely anything went wrong in a 150,000 miles. System 10 stereo, moon roof, lift back, gorgeous lines, from the wide body stance to the symmetrical lights on the back. The All-Trac Turbo in that generation was a let down compared to the Eclipse All-Wheel Drive Turbo, the GSX. The All-Trac time was 7.4 seconds compared to GSX time, 6.4 seconds. Both had almost the same power and torque output. In 95, I bought a Talon AWD. She was nice, but to this day I miss my Celica.

I had an '80 Celica GT hatchback with the 20R engine and automatic transmission. It was pre-owned with about 100K on the motor when I got it. That car gave me so much headache that I sold it after owing it for just 1 year. In 2002 I bought my GT-S with a manual 6-speed transmission and the factory Action Package body kit. It's the best car I've owned, to date, with 420K on the motor and still running. Maybe because I'm the original owner so the longevity of this second Celica is from my driving habit and how I've kept it maintained.

My 1993 celica gt will remain the most fun car of my life. It wasn't fast but handled unbelievably. Put a cold air intake and Pacesetter exhaust on, it sounded baaad. Those hideaway headlights ! Put a sunroof and bodykit on, it was beautiful. Ran Michelin low profile tires on American Racing rims. There was a curvey section of road on my way home from work along the Delaware River which we took at about 80mph, my celica stuck like glue to those curves. I remember going to my toyota dealer for some help and direction but the TRD section was one guy at the parts department who wasn't interested, I knew more about what was available. Most of the mods I did I found on the internet where some guy in CA posted what he had done. Eventually I sold it to my buddy's daughter to drive to college. She still has it. The only repair expense I had was the motor for the retractable antenna. I ran into a guy in Ireland years later who had a turbo with the same body style as my 93 but his was newer. Toyota's problem was this selling some models here, some there. I ran into an older couple at the mall who had an All-Trac turbo 93 celica once too. They were from CA. I see the koreans as more the natural extension of the celica than toyota. The former are building their name on sporty fun imaginative vehicles while the latter long ago chose building their bank accounts.

You've failed to mention the jdm spec gt notch back had a 1.6 twin cam twin carb 2tg, and later it and the lift back got the 2.0 18rg twin cam twin carb motor with way more power and features than the rest of the world got

My current and only car its a Daihatsu Charmant, this is a sibling of the Carina, which is the sedan version of the Celica in the first generation, also known as the TA22 chasis, the mechanical is the same, the engine, transmission, steering, everything under the hood is the same, except for the carburetor, a very reliable and trustworthy car

to a certain extent, it is... the 86 is like playing the role of celica now ---a sportscar above the pedestrian commuter toyota, but a notch below the supra.. my statement may just be hyperbole, but if toyota decides to rally with the 86, then i was probably "ok, guess i was right"

When I was a little kid, we had a silver 1984 5MT Celica GT Hatchback. It finally got parked in like 2004 with 386,000 miles on it. I don't know which engine it had, but it did have pop up headlights. I miss that little car.

Great video! However, if I don't remember wrong; Toyota introduced Scion brand cars for the enthusiasts around that time they discontinued Celica. I had a 2005 Scion tC which I was told that it was the continuation of cheap Toyota sports cars who loves modding.

Best looking to me, 6 gen with those round yet cool headlights, then on the fence between 7th gen and 5th gen. That black plastic trim on the front of the 5th gen that made it look like a razor blade look soooo rare and cool.

1st car was an 88 all-trac, followed by a 91 all-trac. No one every noticed the 88, but the angry white Tylenol commanded the #1 lane on the 101 with flared fenders, hood scoop and shark gilled hood, with pop-up headlights flashing high-beams all up in that ass at 90mph. One side, Rubadubb!

I have a '77 but I outfitted it with the 3.5 liter EcoBoost (450hp/520 ft.lbs. of torque), a T-56 and an '89 T-bird SC IRS geared to 3.08:1. It only looks like a Celica, now.

My first Toyota was a 1975 Celica ST Coupe. I still have it today and it has 43000 miles on it no dents or dings. In 76 I purchased a Hilux unfortunately it was taken out in a accident in 79. (if only other people could Drive). But after 83,000 mi the insurance company hey the purchase price of the truck plus $800. And I was allowed to keep the truck. After it got extreme weight training it became a desert racer and mud Bogger for the following 15 years. But I digress. In 76 after purchasing the Hilux I also purchased a Celica GT liftback. I still have that car today. It has over 800,000 mi on it. The funnest car I have ever owned. And decades ago I found it was the easiest drifting car as well. Extremely well-balanced car. It's had a number of engines at my age likely has the last. But is not a 20R or a 22R. I wedged a turbocharged V12 out of the Toyota century. The engine puts out 640 HP with mild manners. In 77 I purchased a Corolla and drove it a number of years with 40- 45 mph. In 1977 I purchased another Hilux but it was the custom 1 ton with a stretch frame for the extended cab they had the back bench seat and a long bed with Duallys underneath. I had that truck till I sold it to a friend in the 90s. I then had a 79 long bed I turned into a street truck we had extensive head work. and would run tens in the quarter mile. Then purchased a 1980 4 x 4 long bed with vent windows. I still have that truck it has just over 400,000 miles. It sits on 44 inch tires with 5:29 gearing in the Marlin crawler. it also has the stroker stage 3 22R and a 5-speed. I then a 84 4x4 long bed. lost it off a cliff years later. Back to the Celica's. Had the 93 all-wheel drive with turbocharger. it wasn't the special edition but it was a blast. that car was a total loss after burnt up on the side of the freewayin 2001. And then the last Toyota I ever purchased. A 2001 two wheel drive Tundra with V6. I have a large number of vehicles of all makes going back to 1939. I try to drive each one at least once a month. Or One A Day. LOL

the way the st205 got banned in rally was quite amazing, toyota found a way to tighten the restricted in the turbo to increase the airflow by quite a bit and that airflow added around 50 extra hp which isnt much but when all of the other cars in the celicas class were meant to be 300bhp and the celica ran about 350, that was quite the difference. the examiners that found out about the restrictor tightening were very surprised and impressed that toyota found a way to do what they did. ive just heard about a new celica that is supposedly coming too which is meant to be powered by a hydrogen engine, i hope it looks good.

I owned a 1978 Celica GT Liftback UK spec which had the 18rg twin cam engine, I still miss that car today. Legend has it that the 18rg was a pirated copy of the Lotus twin cam engine, Toyota took the engine and had it re-engineered to get rid of the reliability problems that lotus had, and made an awesome 4 cyl 2 ltr engine that would pull like a locomotive from 1500 rpm to 5500 rpm with a smooth torque curve. I'm pretty sure the engineering was done by Yamaha because the cylinder heads had Yamaha tuning fork logos in the castings. The rumour over her in the UK is that Lotus bought up a bunch of the 18rg engined GTs and tore them down to find out what had been done to the engines to make them reliable. Whatever the story, it was a great car, if only it hadn't succumbed to the dreaded Japanese tin worm of the 70's.

22:46 The ST205 GT-Four engine was partially made with help from Yamaha, too. Definitely the valve train, probably the cylinder head. I don't remember the details. That's why it can reliably rev to 7900. I got the engine in a Corolla, which causes me continuing grief because I can't afford to repair and use the car but I'd never want to sell it, for several reasons. As for the 6th gen Celica... I find the front ugly but the turbo version's nose grill fixed that powerfully. - And the 7th gen I find too disharmonious with its long and roundish front and the rear looking cut off, like a brick. - I witnessed the engine in person, though, and videos don't do it justice. It is so exciting. (Although the 3S-GTE is pretty fun, too, and maybe even more so because there is no cam switchover you have to time properly.) Video example is in followup comment, but got hidden. I am a new proud owner of a 1984 celica gt-s notchback. It is my first project car and it is beautiful. I’ve been doing an engine swap with a newer 22re from a truck with less than 90k miles due to really bad compression on cylinder 4 on the celica 22re. I can’t wait until I get it back on the road. Already mounted a 1st gen MR2 spoiler on it and it looks like it belongs there.

The hilux featured in top gear did not have a 22r or 22re, it was a diesel model if i recall correctly, and the 22re had issues as any engine would with maintenance they can last a long time, most notably the single row 22re timing chains were prone to wearing the plastic guides aka the rattle of death, if ignored long enough it would shred the plastic guides, and in extreame cases the chain would in time eat a hole into the aluminum cooling jacket, spilling coolant directly into the oil pan, the 22re is a nice engine but if you want it to be a legendary reliable one you have to swap to a dual row chain and get the upgraded metal guides.
