The GR Corolla is finally here, and it's the first time in nearly 2 decades that Toyota has made a sports car by themselves. Question is: Do they still know how to make a sports car?

Maybe I’m da bit of a mess at the moment, but this video made me cry. As a young adult who grew up with his parents struggling and constantly having our cars repossessed while my father slaves away at his concrete job all day just to pay the bills during the housing crisis, and then the rest of us during Covid, I’m proud to say that this year i received a call from my local Toyota dealership to confirm my deposit on my very own GR Corolla Circuit. We’ve come a long way, and now, thanks to my parents, I’ve grown stable enough to get my very first, new car.

the Supra and the 86 have other companies in it simply because of money and profit, not that toyota doesn't know how to make a sports car. it wouldn't be profitable to design a new engine for the 86 or the Supra, it's simply cheaper to buy one from another company, or splitting profits with them.

Not having hypersensitive steering is actually a bonus. It means you can drive it home from work in the evening and not hate how hyperalert you have to be throughout your commute. All cars should be _possible_ to drive with one hand loosely holding the steering wheel, for those times when you're just burned out and don't want to care about anything. As for the Morizo Edition: The fact that he put his own name on the car is actually a huge deal for a Japanese company. You don't take personal credit for something if you work in a Japanese company. That shows truly enormous confidence in the product to be able to justify the faux-pas.

There's something special about a car designer taking you around his or her car, skipping as they do so with excitement, showing you all the unique details they piled on and fought the accountants to keep in the final design, everything from bodywork curves to the excruciating technical specs. That is the reason why this video is so refreshing. This is the first GR Corolla video I’ve watched, despite them flooding KZfaq for a week now. Why? I gave up on this car before it was even released. Toyota made it clear they would limit the volume of production for these significantly BELOW demand. The dealers in the US have made it even clearer that they are utterly amoral opportunists who will suck up every last drop of your money they can get away with. I got a WRX despite it being ugly and slower than the GR Corolla because the sad reality is that these will be rare collector cars that people bought for $100K and stuck in a showroom forever.

But the nice thing is when the weather is great and you are finishd with work i often find myself taking a detour of 20 minutes cuz i know there is a nice road to let it loose and put that 261 PS to work. normaly i allways come home with a smile on my Face with my GR Yaris, its just that greate and most ppl who arent in to cars or not into Japanese cars dont even realize what it is capable of.

Well said! Literally every Toyota performance car you know had Yamaha magic breathed on it. Toyota sent normal motors to Yamaha and said “now make it fast”. Yamaha heads were on all the famous engines. The 2000gt, the RWD celiacs, the sprinter’s, both the AE86 and the later FWD ones (AE111😍), all the fast corolla’s, the Supras, the MR2, the world beating AWD rally Celicas, the LFA, the IS F, the RC F. The thing that this video misses is why the GR Corolla/GR Yaris is such a big deal. It’s literally the only performance car Toyota has made all by its self since 1962 with the sports 800! All of Toyota’s motorsports glory up till now is thanks to Yamaha

"Lost version of it's own Identity" I will add nothing or subtract, you hit most if not all key factors, cause I myself wondered for a while if Toyota forgot what the foundation of the company (was) correction, is! Back in the day "I love what you do for me" was the logo! Now, " we're going Places" Let's go Toyota. 🏁

I'm the first third of this video had me bawling my eyes out. Maybe its me just that I'm a girl but I miss my lil '97 corolla I was forced to work on as a little kid. When I got my license I hated how slow and boring it was and that was how I got into import tuning and car culture. After a lot of blood sweat and tears it was fun to drive and was how I got into street racing. It made me feel like I was that teenager whipping corners and spanking Mustangs on back country roads all over again. I miss old Toyota.

With my MR2 I feel that unique Toyota sports car feel. You can drive it everyday, sun, snow or rain. Learn manual on its forgiving powertrain. Learn the limits of the car and yourself with the reassuring assistance of a friend. It starts every time and, it doesn't mind a slow commute. But get it on a track or a twisty road, and it lightens up. The Yamaha built 3SGE/GTE screams with excitement. The chassis moves and flexes just the right amount, it builds confidence through every perfect apex, through every long sweeper or from one light to the next. It want's to go faster, every intent feels like it wants to chase that next guy ahead. When you're done however you can slow down, lower the windows, turn up your favorite song and cruise home to your hearts content. That's what I've always loved, it's fast, fun, exciting, inspiring, but also calm, confident, and dependable. I've driven Type r's, skylines, GTRs, Mustangs, Porsches and nothing has felt the same as my MR2

Man, I just came for a car review, but your writing ability is off the charts. The way you put things into words is so detailed and true, and it makes the thing you're talking about graphic and mesmerizing And yet you do so in so few words, and without sounding like you're trying too hard to sound smart. I'm impressed

So glad my son tuned me into the Ae86 and we were able to get some before they shot up in price. The 1.6 4age is legendary and wonderful but is still barely 100 happy horsepower. It's really no match for new cars. The tight ratio tranny's not going much above 100 mph. Some parts are rare, non existent or expensive others are dirt cheap and everywhere. It's old, funky and has zero nav or nannies. It's also incredibly light, easy to drive, fuel efficient, comfy, practical, really fun at normal speeds, has rally ground clearance and is appreciating in value. Nimble is a word that very few modern cars can claim. It's the magic. Pop up headlights and eurobeat intensifies.

Great video. I love all 4 sports cars toyota currently provides. The Supra is nutty and value in itself when compared to the price and performance of equivalent bmws. The gr86 is great value as a sport car in general. Both the yaris and corolla are fantastic machines in every aspect. Toyota doing right in the automotive world.

Despite its flaws, i actually love that car. Drove it once, dont own one (yet), but i really liked it. The kicker has always been the manual for me. My company car is a Leon ST with the 7 speed dual clutch automatic, but i really love driving stick and seeing as the Corolla only comes in stick, that car just got +50 appeal for me. Really considering getting one if the pricing's good in germany.

i live in swisserland and got myself a GR Yaris with the Conveninece Package, and it Cost 43300 CHF for that money on a twisty hillroad you can keep up with an Golf R that cost 20k more, sure the Golf R has more Topend and is more Praktical than the Yaris but the Price/performance on the Yaris is just insane. i coudnt belive a car with that pricetag being so good.

Remember, Akio Toyoda in 2005 was sent the finished article of the Lexus LFA, and after pondering for a while he said "This is good, but what if the chassis is made from carbon fibre?" And the LFA that we all know was born. Unloved first, a legend now.

This video brought me to tears, I can't explain why. The story telling was immaculate, the humanism In the design. It's unseen with other car brands. Toyota put their heart and soul into the car for the first time, in a very, very long time.

Great story telling, great video! In the middle of it when it was talked about the lack of something more I was like, there is the Morizo edition! Because not everybody was able to test that one, but the ones that did, they felt very similarly, that the Morizo edition was what they were actually expecting from this GR Corolla.

Sure the Morizo is great but for the price you can get a core especially at MSRP if you can find one, the money spent on a Morizo and losing the rear seats can be made up for in the aftermarket. Its like my MR2's I have owned and still own stock sure they feel rather pedestrian but once you modify them with quality parts and or the TRD catalog on my MK1 MR2 SC they turn into amazing little track/ auto X weapons. A tune and or a different aftermarket gear set in a core model with the LSDs will net you just the same experience. I think reviewers also forget that most enthusiasts end up modifying these vehicles themselves.
