TRD has a long history as Toyota's special motorsports division. But these days, it's dead. But how did it die? And what new entity has risen from the void of Toyota's failures to take on the motorsports heritage that Toyota once had?

TRD is alive and doing well, just not the street sports parts we saw in the 90's. TRD USA is primarily focused on supplying engines to NASCAR Cup Series since 2007, and has won several manufacturer's and driver's championships. You failed to also bring up TRD's open wheel history, with Toyota winning the 2002 CART Championship, taking the Indy 500 and the IRL Championship in 2003. I'm proud to say I've worked for TRD USA since 1998 and we've only evolved with every new venture. We are far from gone in motorsports... but street superchargers are no longer our priority.

It's honestly refreshing to see them go for more fun and performance based vehicles for people that want engaging cars, like the GR Yaris (which I still think is a crying shame for the fact that it's not being released in the U.S.). Thanks a lot for this video. i learnt so much about toyota that i didn't know - very informative and good production style. I'm currently for the first time doing up my 2013 toyota etios, with a TRD body kit and was trying to find a good video about the history of TRD and engines and how they went about their racing and you nailed it. Keep it up!

I have a Pontiac Vibe (Matrix with a Pontiac styled exterior and built by NUMMI in Freemont California). I started wanting to do something to it, and found that Hellwig no longer made anti-sway bars for it, however the TRD kits for the Corolla (which were actually Hellwig parts) was still available, and since the Corolla and Matrix (and Vibe, and Geo/Chev Prizim) all share the same platform, the bars fit. I added those and a bar that spans the top of the shock towers. That was TRD's contribution to my car.

I loved my TRD Matrix. It was hilariously underpowered and loved to drift on dirt and snow with little speed required. Going up a lengthy hill I had to take the truck climbing lanes in 3rd gear being passed by said trucks.

Potentially! But of course, brand consolidation may eventually take over every division. It's difficult for dealers to explain to customers what all the different acronyms are across all the models in their range. So consolidation like this happens to unify branding from development down to consumer.

@Albon I don't know I think your wrong see TRD is still alive and well in Japan and Asia in fact Super GT cars are all built and by TRD they help teams run the Super GT cars they also help out customers throughout Japan and help with racing operations across Asia TRD handle the Lexus RCF GT3 cars and support internationally as well in Japan before they're sent of to private teams for competition so I'd say your point of TRD being dead only counts for Europe, North America and South America TRD is still alive and Kicking in Japan like an old Japanese Retired Sensei.

Nicely done commentary. I worked at Toyota Racing Development in Costa Mesa CA. from '95-'03. That was the heyday here in the US. We built all the race engines for Toyota and developed all the street performance kits like superchargers, suspension, exhaust, etc. Went to all the CART races, and the SEMA shows. Was fortunate enough to meet all the drivers such as Ivan Stewart, Rod Millen and even Dan Gurney. I had a supercharger, suspension and body kit on every car and truck I drove those 8 years. It was the best job any car guy could have asked for. Let's hope TRD isn't dead yet.

Thank you for the content and the well researched information! Even your Supra video was incredibly informative! I've always been a huge Toyota fan since my dad had a company landcruiser J70 back in Dubai. I will never forget the embossed Landcruiser letters on that truck. Almost two decades later I now own 3 Lexus's that still have the same commitment to quality and excellence I observed as a child. In business school I studied Toyota's production processes, logistics methodologies and approaches to build and design. Suffice to say over the years I've learned so much from their approach to quality and study of efficiency at each level. They have built a system around ensuring efficiency with fault tolerance, and still do not observe planned obsolescence within the build parameters of their vehicles. Its exceptionally challenging to ensure a steady level of quality within a manufacturer's line up over this much time and yet with effective practices and adherence to strict quality they've managed it. Not trying to get philosophical but Toyota has a book on TPS (Toyota Production System) that is well worth the read. Really being able to apply that system to your own work flows in life increases efficiency tenfold. Its well worth understanding how one can engineer every facet of a process. When the system works well and can be fault tolerant, the natural tendency will always be to return to center and self correct even in the worst times. Applying that to daily chores, home management, vehicle repairs, working out, eating, and more in life leaves one with a lot more mental bandwidth. Continuous improvement only works if one observes, attempts, fails, reflects, learn, then improve.

Great video! Personally I was saddened first when Toyota went from the GT4 Celica (pronounced Sell-ee-ka here in Australia), to the Corolla WRC car, because of the homologation rule changes, but was gutted when I learnt that they were withdrawing altogether from World Rally in order to pursue F1 glory. Along with that came the death of the GT4, and the end of them making a turbo, all wheel drive sports car available for the public. My second car was a 1977 Celica coupe, and it was the most fun car I have owned. It took 10 years of spirited driving, and the only things it needed in that time was normal maintenance, and a new diff centre. I had plans to retro mod it with a 3S-GTE, but life had other plans. In the end, it was cancer (rust) that sealed it's fate. R.I.P!😢 I literally got goosebumps watching the montage of Toyota's old classics that you showed in the video. I was excited when I first found out about the 86 GT being released. While I do like the look of it, I was a bit let down to here it has a N/A Subaru engine, and that it was made in conjunction with Subaru. Nothing against Subaru, they make great cars, but the new 86 just isn't a real Toyota! I realise that the flat four offers great weight distribution, and low centre of gravity, but the car would still handle great with an inline four, preferably with a turbo! Like yourself, I absolutely love the LFA, but with only 500 made, it will most probably be as far out of reach for someone like me as a Ferrari, Lamborghini, Koenigsegg etc. so I don't even hope to own one someday. I wish they would have made a Supra model from the LFA. Keep the basic layout, but offer it with a newer version of the 2JZ-GTE (in place of the LFA's awesome, instant revving, exotic, but expensive V10), perhaps with VVT, and a good old fashioned 6 speed floor shift manual, instead of that flappy paddle bullshit. Incidentally, the downfall of true Toyota sports cars (when they went to predominantly front wheel drive) coincides with shitty four-stroke motocross bike trend. I jokingly call it "the world gone crazy" age!😅 I don't really like the direction Toyota is going. I still hold hope they might again bring us something great, but I'm not holding my breath. The new turbo, all wheel drive GR Yaris looks like it might be fun, but does it really look anything like a serious sports car? I mean compare it to an ST205 GT4, enough said. Anyway, thumbs up on a cool vid!👍
