For me, this album is a near masterpiece. Age of consent, Your silent Face and The Village are amongst my fave songs and the only one i'm not too hot on is 586 (but this version only, the live and Peel versions i've heard around this time are far superior) In fact its probably my second favorite album of all time after Joy Divisions Closer.

Leave Me Alone is my favorite song of all time. I just had to decide on one, and that was it.
@hdufort

I feel too that they have made a poor choice with the inclusion of 586. This track sounds like synth experimentations more than a finished song. B-side material at most. I like the rest of the album, and it might have been cool to have included an extended version of Blue Monday (like a Blue Monday suite). Age of Consent is a perfect opener, perhaps my favorite in all New Order albums.

The hi-hat on Age of Consent is possibly some of the fastest, most consistent hi-hat playing I have ever heard a human doing, he might be giving Stuart Copeland a run for his money on that one.

Great album. I grew up with the CD, which had Blue Monday and The Beach tagged on either end of side A and B. Felt their additions really expand and fill out the record, to great effect. "586" is a good song which suffers from an aimless minute long intro and "Ecstasy" is probably the weakest track on the album. I've warmed up to "Ultraviolence" a lot over the years, as the dynamics of the string play on the guitar and bass feel a lot like Joy Division. Every other song is flawless. "Age of Consent" is one of the best album openers ever, "Your Silent Face" uses a sample of Kraftwerk's "Europe Endless" so perfectly that it inspired me to buy the album I the first place, and "Leave Me Alone" is the perfect plaintive album closer.

I'm glad you've explained about having to re-upload, because I watched this video a few days ago and then yesterday it had vanished. Thought I was going round the bend... I totally agree with you that Ultraviolence and Ecstacy don't work on this LP, I regard them as filler and I always skip them over when listening to this. (You'll possibly have the same experience with one song from each of their next two albums, too). But, if you treat this as a six-song EP, then this is a very nice record. The cover art is well-chosen; the mood is of a balmy warm summer day, and romance is in the air, but also there's loss and melancholy (of course; they're Brits!) The band's first 3 singles (Ceremony - Mar 81, Procession - Oct 81, and Temptation - Apr 82) were minor chart hits, reaching No.33, 38 and 29 and charting for just a few weeks. They weren't quite a household name yet. 1983 changed all that, when 'Blue Monday' became a Top 10 hit in 1983. (OK, Joy Div's 'Love Will Tear Us Apart' was a posthumous hit single, reaching No.13 in July 80, but a BBC TV strike meant that the video was not seen on our pop TV shows, so we heard it only on the radio and had no visual image to relate it to). So, 1983 was when the band 'became mainstream'. This album sold well, debuting at No.4 in the UK charts. Agreed - Age of Consent is a stunner. We All Stand - hmmm, bit of a poor mix in the studio, I think. Try a live version, eg Rose Hill Hotel, Kilkenny (Ireland) Apr 83, I think that version nails the intended mood much better. My only small reservation is that I think the album could have sounded even better if they had used an experienced producer rather than do it by themselves. They were eager to break away from Hannett, but I suppose at that point they didn't know anyone else. Nowadays, I'd say this is my second fave New Order album (imagining that Ultra and Ecstacy aren't on it), but back then in 1983...As a Joy Div fan there was an ever-growing sense of loss and disappointment. What had happened to the raw passion and existential attack that these musicians had shaken our souls with just 3 years ago? Would we ever hear it again? Had they 'lost it'? New Order were lumbered with this huge albatross which made it very difficult for us to accept their new music on its own terms. I remember that very clearly from my teenage years!

I forgot to say below, I have two suggestions for further 'First Reaction' vids, which you might (or might not) wish to try: 'Warehouse: Songs And Stories' by Husker Du (USA, 1987. Double album, 70 minutes). Imagine Nirvana playing songs almost as good as The Beatles. In fact, Nirvana cited Husker as an influence. 'Psychocandy' by The Jesus & Mary Chain (UK, 1985). Ground-breaking classic. Innocence and harsh noise merged perfectly. Very difficult for a band to pull that off, and you'll either love it or hate it, but they manage it, and if you get it, it'll change your world.

@@AlexHaitz that sounds like a good idea. also worth noting when you listen to low-life: the version of "the perfect kiss" they included is an edit of the original that basically cuts out a lot of the best parts, so seek out the 8-minute version at some point because it's so much better
