Huge Smiths & Morrissey fan! When Morrissey wrote "Killing for no reason is murder", he was expressing the fact that with grocery stores providing fruits, vegetables, beans, and other wonderful items, then killing animals for food is unnecessary...if we don't need flesh to survive, then meat is murder. It's not religion but morality that says a sentient being has the right to live without being terrorized by humans. To believe any species of animal (yes, humans are animals) has the right to inflict their will upon another, especially to the other's detriment, is the a form of hatred termed "speciesism". We were not born to believe this but it was taught to us at an early age. Ironically, because humans believe that we are intended to consume flesh (humans will eat ANYTHING but thrive only as herbivores), not only are we destroying our planet as half of the greenhouse gases are a result of animal ag and clearing rainforests to support human craving for beef, but there is unprecedented degenerative disease due to consumption of meat and dairy. Most vegans become vegan after an incident or information removes the veil of cognitive dissonance from our eyes. Being open-minded and doing our own research helps. "What the Health" changed my life, for others, it was "Earthlings"...both wonderful documentaries. I've been vegan for over a year and it's changed everything for the better. Anyway, just want for you to please understand that vegans are trying to help the world by eliminating unnecessary violence, pollution, and self-destruction. We care.

Just to add, Morrissey was pretty brutal, at times, about what he thought about the UK. He didn't paint a great picture of the UK. Not helped by him by being brought up close to a city suffering from deindustrialization and lack of investment at a time of deep recession. It was a grim time. Manchester is now a modern, developed and vibrant. One of Lonely Planet's best cities to visit (maybe top 3 or 4) in the world. I wouldn't go that far myself but it is a great city with a fascinating history.

I absolutely love your reactions to my favorite band of all time- I love introducing people to the Smiths, too.... One thing I have noticed is you pay more attention to the music than the lyrics... both are sublime (Marr is a god), and- Morrissey's lyrics are what make this music extra great-full stop. Maybe comment on them more - or listen to them more?
@AlexHaitz
@AlexHaitz 5 жыл бұрын
That seems to be my main downfall when I first listen to any new songs, on camera or off. The music jumps out at me first, and the lyrics become more foreground on repeat listens. There’re occasional exceptions to this rule. I vividly remember noticing the lyrics up front on a good number of Queen is Dead songs. Cemetry Gates, I Know It’s Over, There Is A Light. Meanwhile, other Smiths albums I don’t experience the same way. Couldn’t tell you why.
@desertfenton
@desertfenton 5 жыл бұрын
@@AlexHaitz That's interesting...Cemetry Gates (PS-love that you know to spell it the right/wrong way) was one of the first songs I ever heard from them. All of the songs you mention are indeed lyrically excellent. I was at a party in 1986 and a friend had TQID on a cassette and.. well that was that.. The first song I heard was Frankly Mr. Shankley.... and well, I went back and did what you're doing (though much longer ago) and listened to the earlier albims and basically fell in love with this band...I've seen Morrissey live 49 times... literalIy. I can't explain what the Smiths mean to me... and I truly appreciate your critique - it's fascinating to watch someone hearing it for the first time.

Thanks! I saw a guy doing a very similar format to this, where he listened to a few Radiohead albums (my favorite band), and it was cool to see someone’s first reaction to moments in songs that I’ve come to love. The song does make one think, regardless of one's views. A cannibal killing for protein is going to be convicted of murder rather than manslaughter. I don't intend to impose my views on this, but I do wonder about why many people who would eat a cow recoil at eating dogs, cats, etc. that are also domesticated to depend on humans for surviving.
@MayorBrownn
@MayorBrownn 6 ай бұрын
@@kevind4850 the thing is it’s been scientifically proven that humans can survive and thrive on plants and fungi alone. So if we can eat food that doesn’t involve killing billions of conscious and emotion filled animals every year then we should. As well as meat being so expensive these days it’s much cheaper to just eat beans, rice, oats, legumes, potatoes, fruits and veggies.

That's pretty unfair and presumptuous to state that atheists/agnostics monolithically view living beings as "just particles" without intrinsic value. Maybe they see that people/animals as having worth for the very fact they are alive and, accordingly, are innately entitled to dignity and respect simply due to their existence? I think you're ignoring the possibility that individuals can devise their own moral codes and standards from basic logic and experience in the absence of reliance on a religious text. (For the record, I do think there is some value in organized religion, but I also think concepts like compassion and the Golden Rule are fairly self-evident.) I've always had a problem with the "atheists have no objective morality" argument. The argument seems to be premised on the assumption that all religious people in a particular faith have a shared and "objective" understanding of their moral duties as gleaned from their religion. That assumption ignores the fact that religious texts are subject to wildly different interpretations and the existence of different denominations and theological schools reflect that fact. I don't think many people would say that a Southern Baptist and a liberal Presbyterian would likely have the same ideas of what it means to "practice their Christian faith" in the 21st century.
@AlexHaitz
@AlexHaitz 5 жыл бұрын
A lot of older atheist writers affirmed this very notion. Read Russell, Sartre, and Nietzsche. They'll readily admit that their worldview doesn't allow for any ultimate value in existence. And I'm not making the argument that I have THE correct moral values, only that morality is arbitrary unless the values and duties are from a higher authority than humans. The idea that it's Christianity or Islam or Hinduism that has the correct worldview on morality is an entirely different argument, and one which I am not making here. I'm just claiming that morality, the things that you claim are self-evident (which I'd also claim), are transcendent.
@danman92
@danman92 5 жыл бұрын
@@AlexHaitz Even if that's the case with Russell, Sartre and Nietzsche (whose works I haven't read a ton of), that doesn't mean every atheist or agnostic person necessarily ascribes to the moral/metaphysical outlook of those particular individuals, much in the same way that not every Christian views the Pope as the vicar of Christ on Earth.
@AlexHaitz
@AlexHaitz 5 жыл бұрын
Sure, I was just saying that that outlook was pretty mainline before (and for part of) the 20th century. We're now in the era of Michael Shermer and Sam Harris who are attempting to ground morals in something aside from a transcendent anchor.

Apart from "Nowhere Fast" as a song, and the death of Pelle Lindbergh of the Philadelphia Flyers coinciding with "That joke isn't funny anymore", which meant a lot personally back then, I think it's a bit lame compared what we were expecting from them back then.

I don't know much about the issue of animal equality against human thinking. By not achieving full communication with them. Before it was thought that an animal did not feel, think or communicate, that it could not be creative and much less think of itself something. Now much more is known about his ingenuity, communication and instilled in the notion of his own life and death. Monkeys have been seen creating tools, whales trying to tell us something and dogs finding out deceased dogs and other animals even in duel. I imagine that in the future we will know more about it. In the meantime, and for now, the debate lies primarily in cruelty and entertainment against them, justified merely by our supposed intellectual superiority. However, we are not so superior if in the end we fail to overcome our self-destruction. When Morrissey was asked about the subject of his vegetarianism, he was told that the reason why humans eat meat is because of hunger, he said that nobody is so hungry, given the environmental and physical circumstances of the human body ... it would be preferable a vegetable (which feeds healthily) to eat from the cruel sacrifice. PS: regarding this great album of the smiths, I can only say wonders in both music and lyrics. Bravo

Oh, don't worry: monarchy, religion, and the education system are all things that we here in Britain hate about Britain as well. Maybe that's why our comedy, music and art is as acerbic as it is. We can all agree on what's shit, but not what's good.:) As for the album: i always liked 'That Joke...', 'Nowhere Fast', 'Barbarism..' and the title track, but not a lot of the rest. Though i do like the lyrics. That goes without saying. But, like the first album, there's a lot of atonal discordant stuff. Which isn't necessarily a bad thing in of itself, it can just give you earache after a while. Looking forward to the 'Strangeways' review.

If subjective morality is just opinions, then it isn’t morality, it’s opinions. Morals require an objective standard by which to measure them against to see if they are right or wrong. And if the claim is that humans make the standard, then everyone is of equal authority to say what’s right and wrong, even Hitler and Stalin.

@@AlexHaitz I don't see where you get from if morality is just an opinion then it isn't morality? Generally morality by it's very nature are sets of 'rules' human's have for living with each other, without humans to discuss and enact them there is no (human) morality. Moral authority is granted to anyone in the conversation - Hitler thought he was doing the moral thing, lots of other people disagreed with him so we kicked his ass. If moral authority is granted to anyone in the conversation, what would happen if pedophilia became the norm, and anyone who questioned it was excommunicated? Does that make pedophilia moral because a majority agrees that it’s good?

@@AlexHaitz Right so now we are getting into how and why things become moral. This is not arbitrary at all. Like I said at the beginning morals are systems of behavior 'agreed' upon by conscious, social creatures - morals don't exist if we vanish from the face of the earth - although other conscious social creatures that come after us may have their own versions. Moral codes generally (there are huge exceptions to these codes due to the complexity of human life as is to be expected) are laws that help humans thrive - if they don't help, they don't spread, this is a Darwinian moral view. Things like child rape and murder, say would not aid social cohesion and so humanity rejects these things quite naturally over time. However people still do these things obviously because this is not simple and there are a huge amount of variables and elements involves that's why we see so much convergence on these issues but also diversity of moral thought.

Another interesting review, thanks for that. Meat is Murder is the only Smiths track I routinely skip while listening to them as I find the preachiness a bit irritating. I've been a fan since the first single, think Morrissey has a great singing voice and style, but I also think the man is a twat. You have a very strange idea of what atheists believe. I don't know any atheists who think that there are no such thing as morals. The only thing all atheists have in common is a lack of belief in gods. Morality comes from upbringing and social norms, and from thinking. And for theists it can come from books written in the stone age- only difference is that atheists leave that last one out.
@AlexHaitz
@AlexHaitz 5 жыл бұрын
I say atheists have no objective moral anchor, not no morals whatsoever. Theists believe in an objective moral standard which is in higher authority than themselves. Atheists do not. So my argument about the baby for meat vs. animal for meat was just to point out how on atheism, it's all a matter of opinion. If one were to say "This is the moral standard", I am also a homo sapien just like the person saying it, and I have just as much moral authority as they do. Suddenly, morals become arbitrary on that worldview.
@MrTumshie
@MrTumshie 5 жыл бұрын
I don't think that is accurate. I assume by calling moral standards objective you mean they are fixed, not open to interpretation. This just isn't so in reality. Even those moral standards which come from a perceived higher authority are continually open to interpretation and reinterpretation as society around them changes. Churches down the centuries have regularly revised the meanings of their holy books. (Which is in itself breathtakingly arrogant, basically saying "I think what god meant was...".) There are some basic morals on which almost all societies agree- no killing or assaulting without just cause as one example- which basically come down to treating others as you'd like to be treated. These basics are agreed on by societies of all faiths and those of none. These societal norms or morals are derived from human experience, whether they are then codified in a holy book or not. To suggest that an atheist morality is more arbitrary than that of a theist ignores the real roots of common social morality. In terms of arbitrariness it may well even be that the atheist is less likely to treat morality as an arbitrary thing since they will follow the rules because they think it is the moral way to live, rather than in hope of an eternal reward or in order to avoid eternal punishment.

I'm not referring to moral epistemology, but to moral ontology. The existence of morals, not our knowledge of them. All I'm claiming is that there ARE objective moral values and duties, regardless of how well/clearly we know them. And I think those basic morals you mentioned are good examples.

The Headmaster Ritual is about corporal punishment in schools, which was prohibited in the UK in 1986. Meaning Morrissey probably got smacked for being a smug smartass one too many times, and decided to write a song about it. Also, Morrissey was not popular in school, and he constantly talks about how barbaric and evil his high school was. He was a sad loner in high school, and dropped out because he hated it so much. As for your Meat Is Murder diatribe, I think it's weird and slightly troubling how you seem to believe atheists/agnostics have no morals. They do, they just get their morals from something other than a holy text, such as from culture, human nature, how they were raised, common sense etc. For example, you don't have to be told that murder is wrong by a holy text. It's been engrained in every culture since way before religions even existed. From Wikipedia: "Morality is the differentiation of intentions, decisions and actions between those that are distinguished as proper and those that are improper. Morality can be a body of standards or principles derived from a code of conduct from a particular philosophy, religion or culture, or it can derive from a standard that a person believes should be universal.

This is a common misunderstanding, I don’t claim that atheists/agnostics have no morals, just no objective morals or an objective moral anchor. Their morals are simply an illusory rule that doesn’t exist in higher authority beyond humans themselves.

A lot of philosophers hold this position, and many old school atheist thinkers like Russell, Sartre, and Nietzsche touted this. It's only now with people like Michael Shermer and Sam Harris that atheists are trying to ground morals in something non-transcendent.

I appreciate how you grasp the reality of moral relativism without the presence of a transcendent and authoritative source from which we can ground our moral claims. While - as you said - Morrissey is perfectly free to express his convictions on the subject, he has no ability to condemn carnivorism as being truly, objectively evil. It's a tough pill to swallow if one takes on the atheist or areligious worldview, as our intuitions strongly suggest moral realism as opposed to morality being illusory or fictitious.

Morals/ethics require rules that can be adhered to or violated. Rules require a rule-maker. If there is not higher authority than humans, than every human's moral code is just as legitimate one from the next. There is no "good" or "evil" metrics to apply to any given action, it's all just preference and opinion.

You totally lost me with the "atheists don't have a moral compass" argument because it is totally wrong, morality does not need to come from a higher realm or religious system of belief at all. You have moral naturalists, moral nihilists, moral relativists etc. So your point falls flat. It sounds like you are either ignorant about it or a religious person who dislikes/can't accept that other people have ways to live that better suit them than religion.
