I've never tried the Harry Ramsden ones as my son only eats skinny fries or the vile southern fried chips and I seldom eat them ...although I don't really like skinny fries. Next time I'm in Iceland I'll get a bag for myself and partner when he comes for tea

I’d go with Aldi. Value for money. If you put as much “seasoning “ that McCain do in manufacturing of courses its going to taste different. (Not £3 worth). Plus the Aldi was better on the “traffic light” system. Great review as ever.👍

McCain's home chips all the way for me. They cook the best, usually when you oven cook chips the times are a lie and you need to cook them longer than stated. But McCain's cook really well. The texture is the best too. Oh and they're now on roll back for £3. Best place to buy the McCain's is Iceland. They have a bigger bag in their 3 for £10 mix and match. And there's loads of good stuff in that offer.

@@BaldFoodieGuy heron foods has some McCain's chips in £2 for a massive bag, they were destined for restaurants and pubs but for some reason got diverted to heron. If you're ever in a pub and the chips look formed in a factory rather than being chipped on site then they're probably McCain's.

Just been to Tesco today, thought I'd have a look for any chips that looked like the McCain's ones. Tesco home style straight cut chips. £1.80 I think they were. Really good and give the McCain's a run for their money. Definitely worth a review. Cook nicely and the chips are large ones.

As soon as you started and I saw mc Cain home fry's crinkle chips, those are the oven chips for me, I've tried all sorts, but to me, they are the best! After having a chip pan fire at home when I was a child, I vowed that I'd never own a chip pan, I've never had one in my house, but the best home cooked chip, cut your chips, leave in water a few hours or overnight, day them and cook them the old fashioned way, in beef dripping, lovely light fluffy, and crispy on the outside, just like my mother used to make, and it wasn't her that left the chip pan on, it was my dad, say no more!
@RS-ln3ns
@RS-ln3ns Жыл бұрын
THAT'S VERY TRUE. IF YOU LEAVE YOUR CUT CHIPS IN WATER OVERNIGHT, WHEN YOU FRY THEM, THEY COME OUT FLUFFY ON THE INSIDE AND CRISPY ON THE OUTSIDE. HOMEMADE CHIPS ARE ALWAYS THE BEST BECAUSE THEY TASTE NATURAL AND ALSO TASTE A LOT MORE NICER THAN THE FROZEN ONES.

For the last few months my regular food shopping has been from Aldi and so I have been homing in on their cheapest bag of chips almost every visit. The bag size is generous and I know I can add salt, paprika or chilli flakes if wanting to and I like to add butter sometimes. Mix the chips in the melting butter to spruce them up a little and also to help flavourings to stick.

The thing with a lot of the supermarket branded items is that they usually come from the same place, ie, McCain's in this case, only they're the products that don't quite meet the manufacturing standard for the brand and they lack the garnishing. The nutrients you get are all the same, the only difference is the taste, and tbh, what they've added to the McCains you could probably add to the basics for a third of the price. In fact, if you're going to add salt and vinegar or ketchup anyway, you're arguably paying for additions in the McCains that you won't even taste.

Hi Gareth. I've given up on buying brand name chips. With all the seasonings and coatings they have, the actual potato flavour of the chip is lost. So it's just the cheap chips and I sprinkle them with Vegetta vegetable stock powder and a quick toss before airfrying. Perfect chips every time. Another fine comparison review today Gareth. Cheers 🤤👍😀

I bought Asda essentials the other day but only because the only alternative (like for like) in Asda were McCain, as we didn't want French Fries. I would have bought the McCain ones, but as they contain flour my wife cannot have them - she has a gluten intolerance. I get that flavour is (very) important, but sometimes more ingredients alienates a bigger percentage of potential customers. Thanks again for this Gareth. keep up the good work!

Dextrose is basically sugar derived from wheat. Not sure why that's needed, maybe helps the crust as it caramelises. I bought the tesco on recently as i went there instead of aldi to have a look at their prices. 1.5KG straight cut for 99p which is same price as Aldi. Couldn't tell the difference apart from the tesco one being a tad darker and crispier... but I may have cooked em longer.

Guys, you can make your own. It's so simple. Cut potatoes (the right potatoes though for the job) with their skins into chips or a bit bigger. Seasons them with whatever you want and drizzle your favourite oil on them. That's a 5 min job. Then cook them as you would these frozen chips 20-25mins. Infinitely better chips.

I usually cook my own potatoes from scratch. The thing is that sunflower seed oil, (& other seed oils,) have components, that turn into toxic aldehydes, when cooked. Look it up, it has all been researched. So I prefer things that have been cooked in Olive Oil. Also of course if you cook your own you can choose what you put on them, roll them in paprika or whatever. Could you please do a video on which are the most economical Olive oils to use?

if im cooking for me self i dice up fresh spuds, i deep fry them, but if we having home made fish n chips for me and the wife i prefer to blanch the chips then air-fry them as regular shaped chips, cheaper and just as tasty... even better if you have airdried crispy bacon and then grind it over the chips in a salt grinder...

I've never met a frozen chip I didn't like. I'm more than happy with the cheapest chips so those Aldi or Asda chips would be fine for me. You'll probably find all the cheap chips come from the same factory. Those aldi and asda chips look identical. Ok perhaps the Aldi pack got a bit more oil than the asda pack but they pretty much look the same. I think I've tried all the cheap chips from all the supermarkets and I have no preference.

I do like the Mccains chips but, they are to expensive for me to justify buying them now, so i have been buying iceland brand chips their not as good but cheap the best iceland brand chips so far are the ones in beef dripping they are really nice if you can find them aldi also do them and i expect they are both packed in the same place .

Here's what i do, I buy the cheapest frozen chips that i can, i cook all my food in air fryers (i have two) i get the frozen chips and put them in a large bowl ( yes i love lots of chips), then i put a medium spoonful of oil (sunflower for me) then i add a good sprinkle of garlic powder a tiny sprinkle of salt then i add worcestershire sauce (other similar brands are avalible) and mix the lot together, makes for some really tasty chips no matter how cheap they are.

@@BaldFoodieGuy the front should be ignored anyway, as they all have different portion sizes, this is the case in lots of the videos. The back of these had the info per 100g cooked, that is the good comparison. The portions on the front are usually stupidly small too, so they can get green or yellow lights on the system they are making a mockery of.

one of the areas for me,where i find it hard to find a cheaper substitute,the mccains do taste much better,problem i find with cheaper brands is,cut thin,in oven some just turn to crispy bits,lots of really small chips in bag,but costwise,mccains are over the top,some of the cheaper potato croquettes arent bad,more potato,cook better,good alternative to chips

We`ve tried Lidls , Aldis chips of various descriptions and also Mc Cains, Home chips and crinkle cut chips and th clear winner is McCains. Iceland generally have an offer on McCains with the 1.20 kg bag (used to be 1.36 kg) retailing at £3.40 a bag or £ 4.50 for two bags. Our kids won`t have any other chips than McCains - I`ve even tried putting Aldis chips in a Mc Cains bag but without success. Love your videos.
