@@DontUputThatEvilOnMe The only person truly justified to be held accountable in any way is the armorer who declared the gun cold. It is literally the job of the armorer. You can criticise Baldwin all day for not checking the gun himself, but that is not a criminal offence as an actor on a movie set. Plus witnesses confirmed he did not in fact have his finger on the trigger. There is no way he can be charged for this.

I've worked on film sets for six years and this is a nightmare. From my experience the three people responsible for on set gun safety are the director, the 1st AD, and the armorer. You don't want the actor being responsible for on set gun safety. It would lead to more accidents. The idea that a live round would be on set is insane. Film/TV is the only industry where you point a gun at someone, pull the trigger, and expect them to be fine. The idea that you wouldnever point a gun at someone on set is stupid. Turn on the TV right now and flip the channels. Stop when you see someone pointing a gun at another person. You won't make it ten channels.

I am no expert but I think similarly, the actor's job is to act , he is not supposed to check the director, the cameraman, or the propguy etc...they have to trust each other that everyone does their own job....I would personally be afraid to use a gun and would check it, but if they say, the professionals,this is a fake gun...why would I question them...there are so many kind of dangerous scenes where the actor is told, just do it, everything is alright and he or she has to trust......like hanging scenes, the same in real life, you go to a zipliner, you are told that it will hold you, everything will be fine, you dont start to check the cabels, just like with a cable car, you dont go to the engine , you just get in the cable car and ride if the cable gets broken then who's fault is it....

You are wrong it is everyone who touches the guns responsibility every actor is trained that handles a gun and it sounds like he was never trained properly and he admitted he pulled the hammer back if he were properly trained he would know that that gun would go off if the hammer is released they got a bunch of people who has no training or on the job training if you have someone responsible with guns they should have at least a year of training under someone who is established and it needs to be on set

RUST SET SHOOTING FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS Q: Are firearms that would actually function if loaded with real ammunition ever utilized on movie sets, and if so are they ever pointed directly at another person? A: Yes, real functioning firearms are used on movie sets and yes, they are frequently pointed in a manner that would be considered grossly unsafe if one were handling the firearm in the ‘real’ world. This includes directly at someone at up to very close range. Q: So the standard accepted practices for handling firearms in the ‘real world’ do not apply on a movie set? A: No, how could they? This is why the safety procedures detailed below are in place. Q: Okay, then is there ever a need to have actual functional ammunition on a movie set? A: Maybe. Live ammunition is typically used to create ‘dummy rounds’ (more below) though this work is typically done remotely (not on set) BEFORE the actual filming. Live ammunition is always to be kept physically separate from the firearms (meaning not only the same room, but not even in the same trailer). Q: Really? So are there any defined Hollywood safety practices that are in place to prevent an accidental or unintentional discharge of a firearm? A: Yes! I will list the pertinent ones below. Note that they were revised (strengthened) after the fatal accidental shooting of Brandon Lee on the set of The Crow in 1993. The industry has operated for the most part safely since then. Q: Wow! So were these ‘accepted industry practices’ followed completely on the set of Rust? A: No, it doesn’t appear so, more below. Q: Why weren’t these guidelines followed on the set of Rust? A: Great question! As anything here would be conjecture on my part, the true answer is simply ‘I don’t know.’. However, I would put a fair wager on the fact that Mr. Baldwin can truthfully answer this question. It is really too bad Mr. Snuffleupagus didn’t really ask him… Q: Is it reasonable to expect an actor to be the final check on a movie set as far as if a firearm is safe or not? A: Great question. Probably NOT. As you can see below, IF the safety precautions are followed (with the last two typically happening in view of the actor that will be handling the gun), would it even be necessary?. Actors are many and varied and it is probably too much to ask to train them all in that level of safe gun handling procedures. That is why the process is in place below, to INSURE the gun is not a hazard. This is accomplished by people with TRAINING ON AND KNOWLEDGE OF firearms in general AS WELL AS on the specific firearm in question (The Armorer). Q: Is it an at all intelligent question to ask if Mr. Baldwin would have been willing to point the gun at his head before pulling the trigger? A: Hmmm, you tell me. You’re sitting at a table with your wife, your wife’s mother, and a police officer). There is a pistol at the center of the table. You MUST find out if its loaded but the ONLY way you may find out is you must point it at one head at the table and pull the trigger. This includes your OWN head. WHAT are you going to DO? Not that simple, is it…? The true answer is if the procedures below were followed in view of Mr. Baldwin, he should have no concerns about sticking the gun into his mouth and pulling the trigger (though that is certainly NOT a good habit!). Q: K, so tell me about the practices that should have prevented this accident. A: Sure. The first is called control and surety. All deadly weapons on set must be under the direct control of the armorer 100% of the time (unless they are in the hands of the actor, however the armorer would typically still be ‘on scene’). If they are not under direct control of the armorer, the weapons must be secured (locked up) with no access by other film crew members. If there is live ammunition being utilized for whatever purpose on set, it must be kept locked in a location that is physically separate from where the firearms are stored. Live ammunition and firearms are NEVER to be in any type of proximity on a movie set. Q: Was this guidance followed on the set of Rust? A: It doesn’t appear so as it was reported the armorer was not present in the church during the rehearsal and the Assistant Director (AD) was handling the accident weapon. As far as when/where/how the live ammo was introduced, I guess time will tell. Q: Any there other rules that were not followed on Rust? A: It appears so yes. The following deals with the handling of firearms with ‘dummy rounds’. Understand first that there is really only one instance where dummy ammo approximating live rounds would be loaded into a weapon on a movie set, and that is for close ups on a revolver. Accuracy here would dictate an actual bullet needs to be present at the front of the visible chambers, or clued in folks would cry foul (that gun isn’t loaded!). Note however, it seldom bothers Hollywood that in real life guns must be reloaded (the magazine that holds 46)! Though dummy rounds could certainly be constructed with individual reloading components (technically probably safer, especially if you omit the primer altogether), but because of time and cost, live ammo is typically utilized as follows; 1. Pull the bullet (w/ a bullet puller - Google if you need to). 2. Remove the powder charge. 3. Fire the primer (this did not happen in the Brandon Lee accident creating a squib when it went off on set the first time). 4. Typically they then put three or so ‘BBs’ (could be actual BBs or lead shot) in the case then reinstall the bullet. The BB’s purpose is to create a ‘rattle’ when shaking the round to further confirm there is no powder in the case. 5. Most mark the round (in a spot not visible to the camera) with permanent marker (I've heard some use thin tape). As far as handling a weapon loaded with dummy rounds, the practice is as follows (almost entirely defined by the Brandon Lee incident). As you read this, imagine what would have happened on the set of Rust if this was accomplished correctly. Process for filming an actor with a firearm loaded with dummy rounds (note this is typically done in view of the actor who will be handling the weapon): 1. The armorer presents the gun with the loading gate open to the assistant director (1st or 2nd as applicable) while rotating the cylinder to each round to VERIFY they are not live (the AD verifies the spent primers). 2. THEN - the armorer is to point the weapon in a safe direction (typically at the ground) and FIRE the weapon on each chamber. 3. At this point the firearm may be presented to the actor for the scene as it has been verified to be a ‘cold gun’. Q: Were these procedures followed on the set of Rust? A: You tell me. Doesn’t appear so, does it? The AD in question claims he alone performed PART of step one. I think he said he looked at THREE chambers. There are SIX in that gun. This loops back around to the expertise requirement (should be the Armorer doing this). Q: Why didn’t George Snuffleupagus or his staff do some cursory research on this for this interview? A: I don’t know. The ‘truth’ in ‘news’ is seemingly of no importance anymore in the US. Q: So what SHOULD AB have said to George Snuffleupagus? A: That is EASY! ‘The people involved in the making of Rust became all too aware of why standardized firearm safety procedures should be followed on a Hollywood set. Because of our negligence, someone was seriously injured, and unfortunately someone also tragically lost their life. We will endeavor to hold those accountable for these transgressions, and we hope the legal system does the same. Additionally, we will insure the victim’s families are appropriately compensated and cared for as well as effectively communicating and strengthening why these safety procedures must not be circumvented in the future. As one of the Producers of this film, I accept at least partial managerial responsibility for the poor safety conditions on set.’

Just trusting an idiot who walks in and says "cold gun" with no one checking it is negligent. It is stated in the safety manual that the armourer must perform the safety checks in front of the cast and crew. The more eyes there are the more opitunities there are for an error to be spotted never leave such critical safety checks to one person, redundunt safety checks by everyone in the chain of custody. Ignorance does not protect you from the law, just as seeing lots of drunk drivers does not stop you being prosecuted for DI, working on lax sets in the past does not stop you from being prosecuted for negligence.

The armorer (or prop master) is responsible for ensuring weapon safety on set. You have to look at what was “out of sorts” on that set. The armorer was totally inexperienced. On her previous film, which was her first, she would carry guns in a reckless way, pointing them at people. She shot a gun as Nicolas Cage walked by, and he demanded she be fired. This is all available by searching YT. Hannah Gutierrez-Reed had been careless on her first gig, and her main job on “Rust” was to ensure no live ammo was in the weapons. Yet she didn’t bother checking the weapon before its hand-off. It was her job to hand the weapon to the actor. She did not do her job properly, and it cost one life.

lol - this must be the Baldwin Bot Brigade thread. He was the producer on the show. On every movie set I've ever been on, the actor visually inspected the gun with the armorer before taking possesion of it. Baldwin was a Producer on the show, his protests notwithstanding, responsible for many decisions and actions pertaining to how the movie set was run and how safety protocols were followed (or not followed). This whole ABC "unscripted" carefully edited soap opera was a propaganda piece for him to profess his innocence to the jury pool. The man is guilty of manslaughter and reckless endangerment and he should go to prison. And given all the bad karma he spread around in the world, he earned his fate.

A real gun is able to handle and produce the explosion that occurs when a round that does not have a slug (projectile) is fired. I believe when people are firing guns in films you see the action of the gun occurring (the slide moving, shells discharging, etc). If a fake gun is used none of this would be observed. The mechanical action that a real gun produces must have an explosion. And real guns are designed to safely handle this explosion without blowing off your hand.

It's nice of him to say he completely trusts armorer but he forgot to mention Gutierrez-Reed wasn't present during those camera tests. Which leads to the series of failures which lead to the accident: - there shouldn't be any (live) gun on the set as she should keep it locked in safety - assistant director shouldn't give (live) gun to Baldwin as he had no right to do so - Halyna shouldn't tell him to point the gun at her and pull the hammer up and down - assistant director Hall shouldn't be the one who is giving the actor (live) gun, he didn't check it - director on the set should have not allowed such carelessness - Baldwin should have checked the gun himself prior to taking it (and not blindly trust anyone when the armorer wasn't around) - they shouldn't use the very same pistol to shoot cans during lunch-time before as casual activity Baldwin probably doesn't want to harm his production and blame his crew but the fact is whole production was highly unprofessional and following by accidental gun discharge before they were asking for it. "Baldwin should have checked the gun himself prior to taking it (and not blindly trust anyone when the armorer wasn't around)" The actor should not be the last line of defense, simply to put more emphasis on the importance of the armorer's job. An actor may not even have the ability to tell the difference between a dummy round and a live round anyway. Imagine your an actor handed an AK-47 filled with dummy rounds, you can't be expected to go inspecting each round to ensure no powder is in them. The armorer should always show the entire crew and demonstrate the safety of the weapon before handing it to any actor. IMHO.

What this person said at 06:02 is how EVERYONE who handles GUNS knows about and is the NORM. You always assume the gun is LOADED until YOU yourself VERIFY that the gun is UNLOADED by opening up the gun and seeing the firing chamber EMPTY. This is what everyone who has a gun or handles guns does as a matter of practice. This is the FIRST thing a person should be told if they have NEVER been around guns. So the FACT that Alec Baldwin has never been told this does NOT make any sense.

@hugerush7073 2 жыл бұрын

Any way you cut it, he's coming off guilty. It's the guy who is holding the gun's responsibility to check the gun, but even if we take Baldwin's word and put that responsibility solely on the armorer, the fact that he was freely using the gun, knowingly, without the armorer present, satisfies the basic definition of negligence. In the state this took place in, negligence involving a firearm is upgraded to what in legal terms they call reckless endangerment, and if this reckless endangerment gets someone killed, what would be a criminal negligence charge gets bumped up to a manslaughter charge.

That, ladies and gentlemen, is called "passing the buck". "Its not Helena's responsibility, it's certainly not my responsibility" "The actor is not the last line of defense." There are other examples of Alec attempting to transfer responsibility away from himself and onto others, who as he says, it was their job to ensure weapons were safe and prepared when handed off to the actors or crew members. Regardless whether it was someone else's responsibility - which it was, he isn't wrong about that - But he also shares in part of that responsibility, to check the gun and ensure it is safe, not only as an actor, but as a fellow human being who wants to protect the lives of the people around him. It is basic gun safety to check guns that are handed to you. Movies sets have protocols when it comes to guns. Especially, after the Brandon Lee incident back in... '94 if I remember correctly. George Cloony was absolutely right in his assessment. Alec is certainly not the only person who shares in the responsibility for the death of Helena Hutchens. The sad fact is, this could have been easily prevented. And now a talented woman is dead. And a kid is without his mother. Husband without his wife. All over a fucking western...

@S you're absolutely correct. It's unhelpful for everyone to state this stuff when there are no set protocals/ laws with guns in film!!!. You would THINK after what happened with Brandon Lee during The Crow, that this would've enacted great change and the federal government & actors/film unions/film industry etc. might have put protections/standards in place as far as filming with weapons. We need to have more strict policies/standards/s.o.p.s. in place for guns in film so senseless deaths like this never ever occur again. But then we can't get gun control laws agreed upon in this country as it is. There is no national standards and people need stop judging Baldwin so harshly when he absolutely thought the gun was cold, and with what he's been trained and taught with guns in film should have been under control, but until we have strict laws/protocols in place they need to give him a break, he's already gotta live with this incident, knowledge of after effects, and memories, I'm sure there's plenty of self abuse already in his own head, and what ifs. This is not his fault, and I wish people would stop assigning blame to a situation they only hear parts of the story, and become judge jury and executioner based on. Therefore, he knows that a dummy round produces no "kick". Why did he think she fainted after he felt the "kick" of the gun sitting in his hands? He's worked for 40 years on movie sets but claims he's never heard the phrase armorer before..... He said he didn't know 2 people were shot until the officer had showed him a picture of the bullet..... So what he's saying is the medics on sight that originally stabilized both shot people......didn't see bullet holes or blood.....didn't tell anyone else what happened...... etc etc The District Attorney of New Mexico is probably gonna rip this interview to shreds. For one, a technical term would be "diluting the jury pool"......before trial commences and jury selection. The mere fact of pushing these lies publicly makes Alec Baldwin and ABC responsible for tampering with the judicial process.

Bro, I'm a truck driver. I would not be given anywhere near this much leniency if I caused an accident that killed someone. I just took the truck to the mechanic. He told me that it was fine to drive. I have no idea how my trailer detached going 70 on the freeway. Me and the car in front of me both had one thing in common. The belief that my brakes worked. Sure, other truck drivers claim they always check to make sure their wheels aren't going to fly off, but that doesn't help my situation. They just had to add something. How many trucks have driven through rush hour traffic? Millions. I don't know what that has to do with the mile of carnage I just caused by texting while driving, but it sounds good, doesn't it? Of course I don't merge when there's a motorcycle there. Unless he flashes his brights at me, which is what happened. He flashed them, so I just merged real quick and decapitated him. I was just there, in shock for 45 minutes. I had just come down a steep mountain grade going 180 miles an hour, weighing over 100 tons, because who weighs their load, am I right? I barreled through perhaps 400 cars before finally coming to a stop, got out and walked around for 45 minutes. The police informed me that yes, thousands of people died. That's when I called my wife. My family and I are great. We have a great time. Those people? None of them have fathers, mothers, brothers or sisters now. There's nothing I can do to bring them back. Did I mention I never hit the gas pedal? That's important. I dont even know how I got up to that speed. Sheriff Mendoza said something like the gun was in your hand when it discharged... Basically the legal guys would say Baldwin's actions were the proximite cause of the descendant's death, which meets the criteria for involuntary manslaughter/neglegent homicide. With firearms, there are no accidents. If I signed the death certificate the mode of death would be homicide.

"It's not her responsibility, It's not my responsibility"... It is 110% your responsibility Mr. Baldwin. When you have a gun in your possession... It does not matter if the person handing you the gun says that it is safe YOU the person who is in possession of the firearm should ALWAYS check to see if the weapon is loaded. And even when it is cleared by you... you should never point a firearm at anything you are not intending to destroy. This is basic.. there are 4 golden rules... learn them!

Nah.. That sounds good in theory but what if you have to do the same take 200 times. There should simply never be a live round on any movieset, OR all movie guns should be fake. That seems like the most practical solution. These actors shoot movies for weeks on end.. the final responsibility cannot be on an actor. It has to be on the guy that is hired to carry that responsibility. I would say either all guns should be fake or there should never be any live ammo on set.. Simple!

To be honest, I've never heard "cold gun" used on set either. All guns are considered "cold" until loaded on set so there's no reason to declare it as such. Once they're loaded, the A.D.'s and P.A.'s call out "fire in the hole" or "hot weapon." For what it's worth.

It is stated in the safety manual that the armourer must perform the safety checks in front of the cast and crew. The more eyes there are the more opitunities there are for an error to be spotted never leave such critical safety checks to one person, redundunt safety checks by everyone in the chain of custody. Ignorance does not protect you from the law, just as seeing lots of drunk drivers does not stop you being prosecuted for DI, working on lax sets does not stop you from being prosecuted for negligence. Just "do what you are told" is terible advice, "someone told me to" is no protection from prosecution. Everyone's job is safety, no one is free of the responcibility to think. Just trusting an idiot who walks in and says "cold gun" with no one checking it is negligent.

This interview was simply Alec's friend George here helping him out buy putting out on the record, and getting in front of the facts, that everyone else is to blame. He states he was not responsible for 1) the hiring of anyone (this was the other Producer's fault) 2) where the gun was aimed (that was the Director's fault) 3) That the gun had a real bullet in it (that was the Armorer's fault) and 4) The gun just magically went off without pulling the trigger (that was the gun's fault). This farce was to try and deflect blame and get it in the brains of those who will be on his jury.

It is a tragic event that a live was lost and another person was shot, but I genuinely believe Alec did not mean to hurt anyone. He trusted the armorer and the DP, who said it was cold. The DP should have checked to actually see if it was cold before stating that. He clearly didn't check. Question: is it up to Alec to check the gun? If not, then it's not his fault. If it is, then it is his fault. Another question is who put the live round in the gun, and why wasn't it checked?
@pilummurialis6490
@pilummurialis6490 2 жыл бұрын
It's never Alec's job to check the gun, Armourers are the sole people responsible for that, as it's their job, I have family in the industry, one of whom is an armourer for films with over 20 years experience, I have seen how the checks are done, and one thing an experienced armourer will do (depending on who you hire with tons of experience) is when you load dummy rounds, you show the actor, and then you point it straight at the ground and pull the trigger to go through the rounds, it's how you do it with revolvers, so actors won't be scared if the gun discharges, in Alecs case, he was directed to pull back the hammer on an older revolver, which had the firing pin and no blocker, and that still has the same force behind it as pulling the trigger, to fire the shot, and that's what happened, all the blame should be on the inexperienced armourer, not him

100% anyone who handles a gun should check it. Doesn’t mean he’s completely responsible but he bears some responsibility as a handler. I’ve been handling guns for almost 20 years now and I got my hunters safety certificate at 9 years old and they teach you to treat every gun like it is loaded. It is the “unloaded guns” that accidentally kill. I learned that at 9. Don’t touch a gun if you don’t know anything about common gun safety.

Both the armorer and the actor should have a part to play in the gun being safe. It is never good for anyone to blindly trust what someone else has done with that gun. The armorer should show the actor that the gun is safe before handing it to them, and when loading the gun, the armorer should be made to show the actor each round being loaded. That allows both actor and armorer to cross check each other for safety.

@@pinkrainbow1 all guns are real. Gun safety needs to be taught and practiced by everyone including Alec Baldwin. Lately people refuse to learn gun safety. There are guns all over this country. Although murder by knife has steadily risen over the last decade I would hope that their parents would still teach their children not to mess around with sharp deadly objects such as knives. Also Baldwin says that he wasn’t handed the gun by an armorer but by a fellow producer so clearly no one was thinking about gun safety on that set. He pointed at the director full well knowing that guns can kill and he seems to be blaming the victim. Regardless, guns exist and common sense and practically would have made him think twice before shooting at anyone. Gun safety is the solution to gun violence. When my daughter was in elementary school I boy brought a gun to school to show it off. Because the other kids knew gun safety a potentially deadly situation was stopped. It’s all about teaching, learning and practicing gun safety. In the ABC interview he was using his hand as a fake gun and pointing it toward someone. Gun safety dictates that you don’t do that. In summary he killed one and injured another and he still didn’t learn gun safety. That’s just ignorant.
