You should ABSOLUTELY take your time with the series. I wouldn't want you to read it at any other pace. Theres no rush. One Piece is an Adventure. Meaning it's about the Journey, NOT the Destination. Doesn't matter "when" you get caught up as long as you enjoy the ride.

I just have to say that I really like that you're not just skipping over those "beginning" Arc's. Most Reviewers take 5-10 Minutes max to talk about Syrup Village and then go on. It's like you said, this Arc is slanderized because there really ARE that many Arcs that are better, but that doesn't mean this one is bad. There's almost no Arc where nothing happens and like that, you could talk up to an hour about every Arc and certainly even more about certain Arcs. It's refreshing to see someone not just skipping over everything to get to "the good stuff", because those people realize far too late that they rushed through many good parts.

It's not bad at all. The only real problem with Syrup was the extended battle with Kuro and the silly cat guys. Aside from that, I'd say it were fairly strong for such a little story! Same goes for Nami & Sanji's arcs.

Luffy is quintessentially "what you see is what you get" in the best way but with beautiful nuances and complexities to him
@EmeraldaKasim
@EmeraldaKasim 2 жыл бұрын
The complexities I love is seeing how Luffy’s way of thinking effects / differs from the world around him. Seeing such a simple, straightforward, emotionally honest, childlike soul juxtaposed with the other leaders in this world; people who are motivated by things like greed, reputation, personal selfishness. (Very relatable to the real world). Luffy is not effected by any of this. He is selfish, but even then, he backs up those selfish decisions by being strong enough to still protect his loved ones. Because he has so much love for his crew, this makes them believe in him and do the things he can’t do by himself. This type of wholesome comradery is rare in the rest of the one piece world.

I think „Greed Island effect“ works well as a description for how people talk about Syrup Village. I remember when I binged the series I got emotional because of how the last few chapters recontextualized Usopp’s tall tales and greatly enjoyed the spin on „the boy who cried wolf“ in it, both with Kaya and how the villagers all missed him by the end. The plot is maybe a little bit silly, what with the kind of stupid plan by Kuroo and that makes it a bit weaker than the simple straightforward nature of Buggy’s efforts in Orange Town and Don Krieg‘s ambitions in Baratie. But mostly, on a re-read, Orange Town and Syrup village are on a similar level of quality with either being preferred by people because of individual temperament. The following arcs have a bit more grandeur as they tie into larger ideas in the plot and the world. On top of that Nami‘s emotional baggage has more leverage, as her behavior so far in the story also gets recontextualized into heartbreak.

@@immortallymortal9514 I disagree. He does seem to understand people on a deeper level. It's not just a 'Friend' thing. The biggest example I can remember is how he is quick to understand when people are hurting him to protect him. Both Ace during Marineford and Sanji during Whole Cake are unable to fool him. That alone makes him way more emotionally intelligent than most shonen protagonists. Another one is how effortlessly he understands Vivi as indicated by his convo with Crocodile. Even the Dog during Orange town. Luffy gets him very quickly. Tbh, I can go on and on about scenes which display his E.Q. I hope I have not spoiled anything big. I tried to be vague as it is a video on just 'Syrup Village'.

Your One Piece read has increased my appreciation for East Blue; the discussions especially help illuminate themes that I'd forgotten about or didn't fully realize the first time. Also, seeing how these early ideas contribute to later material in ways I didn't notice before has been really cool. It's honestly fresh to see such an open, honest, and fair perspective and review of early One Piece. Many people fly through early One Piece (I imagine) because of the idea that it's not as good as later material (and it's perhaps natural to feel compelled to rush when there's 1,000+ chapters), but I think they miss so much in the process.

#AJPiece The One Piece community is extremely welcoming to newcomers just because they're happy people are getting into the series . Most of the toxicity , like 95% of it , is contained in discussions about the current events , be it because people don't like how the story is going ( because they think it isn't good or just isn't going the way they want ) or just arc fatigue since Wano's been goin on for 4 damn years , it also doesn't help that this is the first time a good chunck of the community experience an arc week to week

One Piece shows the typical psychological trend that the closer your interests are with another person, the harder you’ll argue with them over small disagreements. The One Piece community is internally quite toxic about all kinds of things but very welcoming outwardly (but also quite pushy to non-readers)

Just wanted to mention that I really love the part revealing how captain Morgan got his position. He's a character who builds statues of himself and always talks about how great he is while he did not truly earn that position. I always like to think that somewhere in him that he's aware of that (at the very least, that he doesn't feel like he earned it) and that that's why he tries to overcompensate for it so much.

You are in for a hell of an adventure, man. Even if you know some events from down the line, what makes them special is how naturally they develop over the course of everything up to that point. It's already apparent how good the series is right out the gate, but it builds on every foundation it sets in the most satisfying and cohesive way possible. Just make sure you're not breezing over details, even offhand comments characters make, because more than likely they will become important later on. Even every "tall tale" Usopp tells in Syrup Village. God I can talk about One Piece for hours, but I'll leave it at that. Just know that your time investment is *more* than worth what you'll get out of it. It is phenomenal.

I think too many people come from more fast-paced action stories, imposing that expectation as a standard. I stopped watching the anime after a very short time, because the pacing just threw me off. My friends suggested continuing with the manga, and I soared through with the same attitude you had. After following weekly for a year, I went back and reread. It made me realize that the action is secondary. The little details that build the world and characters became so much more enjoyable, and enhanced the best moments. A lot of stories are cool people fighting with cool powers, and that works for them. In One Piece, everything hinges on the characters, their interactions and how they play off of each other. The "good part" for me, at least now, is the ideological differences, from Luffy's epic clashes with the villains to the silly gag-filled interactions of different groups. #AJPiece picks up on so much of this on his first read that he'll come to the major moments with a more well-rounded appreciation of what they mean.

I love listening to your thoughts on One Piece because u go into a vast amount of depth for someone who says he is not going to hyper-analyze it. Also, I feel that we One Piece fans underrate the first couple of arcs only when trying to get others into it because we want them to be more hyped for what is to come in the better arcs. I may tell them that those initial arcs arent that good, but in reality, I enjoy and like them a lot. Personally, I only downplay them so that they may take those expectations into account and enjoy the first couple of arcs more than if I were to say, "One Piece is the greatest anime ever," when I am taking into account all the remaining arcs they have yet to see, and have their expectations sky-high. So basically, One Piece fans do like the beginning arcs, but we just say they are not as good as the following arcs. I love the videos, and especially the One Piece ones, pls keep em up 👍. #AJPiece

Syrup Village is an important arc because it introduces a crucial element in which Oda excels at: scene geography. Usopp gets wind of Kuro's plan to invade the island, so he douses oil on the slope in the northern part of the island. But oh no, the pirates are coming from the south! The SHs run there, except Zoro, who gets pushed onto the slippery oil and falls behind! And Luffy gets lost because he doesn't know where south even is! Usopp and Nami come first, but they can't do much against the pirates. Dramatic tension! Eventually Zoro and Luffy manage to come and beat the bad guys. Resolution! This is a very simple example of how Oda establishes points of interest and move characters along them, and it gets so much more complex later on, to the point Oda has to draw maps pointing out where the main points of interest are and which characters are there at the moment.

Love your video! I love Usopp ao much, when danger is ahead you can allways count on Luffy or Zoro face it, but when Usopp fights he shows the kind of bravery only a coward is capable of.

Not sure if you know or if I just missed it, but a cool connecting point between Luffy and Usopp is that Usopp's dad (Yasopp) was actually recruited by Shanks, and is now an officer of the Red Hair Pirates! Yasopp actually used to tell Luffy stories about Usopp when they met in Foosha Village #AJPiece

#AJPiece Try to remember Usopp's if you can. Won't say why because of spoilers but a little down the line you may want to skim through and refresh about what those lies were. Hopefully Twitch chat reminds you or something.

Kuro, the thousand plan man, shows that he doesnt have remorse over killing kaya and destroying the village and was capable of doing so the entire time. despite this he chose to live a fake life for years and at the end of his master plan he just throws all that setup away and kills everyone. what a genius plan.

Omg you just made me realize how much Usopp and Kuro really parellel. Usopp lying to help Kaya. Kuro lying to hurt Kaya. Usopp wanting to be a brave warrior of the sea. Kuro wanting to abandon his pirate name. Usopp deciding to fight despite being alone. Kuro using his allies as fodder. Usopp lying about having allies, but gaining the straw hats. Kuro already having allies but throwing them away. I already loved Usopp but now I love him even more. And then in hindsight how obvious it is when Zoro takes Usopps shot because Usopp never misses and wouldn't've hit Zoro. And Usopp being a liar, but Luffy being honest. And how the most honest character can tell the liar is actually a good person and wants him on his crew.

I've never heard of people dissing greed island before, though I can understand why you would with it being sandwiched between 2 other phenomenal arcs. To me I've mostly been thinking of that effect as the Thriller Bark Arc effect [a later One Piece arc]. I'm sure that'll make sense to you when you get there, but it is frustrating seeing an amazing arc get dissed because it doesn't live up to the expectations set by the previous or next arc and I think no arc exemplifies this more than Thriller Bark.

When I was first going through the anime back in 2018, Syrup Village was actually the arc that got me properly interested. Sure, the next two arcs pretty much solidified it as a show that I'd stick with for a long time to come, but this was where I became very much invested in the story and actively looking forward to seeing the next episodes. Nowadays I can't stand it lol. After seeing the heights of the story, the growing pains become obvious, and it becomes a slog on rereads and rewatches. That said, I wouldn't even call it a bad arc, and it's refreshing to see a positive take on it. Usually people breeze over it so they can get to Baratie and Arlong Park, so seeing a full 50 minute video dedicated to it is really refreshing. It's making me want to go back and re-evaluate it myself!

An interesting tid bit about Usopp is that his long nose is reminiscent of Pinocchio, not sure if everyone got this the first time. I had to find out after watching mother's basement, but still neat to know none the less. These videos of yours are really fun and laid back with the face cam and music in the background. I love listening to them while drawing or something, so I hope making these videos and reading the rest of the manga brings you as much joy as you have for me by making these👍

I really like to see more people get into One Piece, btw, the more you read it, the more little trivia about the crew like who cuts their hair on the SBS by Oda, I'm not sure if it is necessarily at the end of each arc in the manga or if you have to find them out by yourself

#AJPiece Definitely an enjoyable watch. As someone who is fully caught up with the manga, it can sometimes be easy to forget where it all began. I'm really glad you're enjoying your experience with the manga and I honestly love this format for talking about the show. The manga is genuinely a heartwarming and moving odyssey. One thing I wanted to make mention of now. You've been doing a great job of recognizing and catching all of the thematic elements as well as world building connections. As someone who enjoys a fleshed out world and the interconnectedness and depth that comes with it, I can assure there is so much more. My recommendation is to pay special attention to whenever the media is referenced. This includes everything from stories told, newspapers, even to clothing choices. Everything Oda puts into the story, especially in the first 200 chapters, is connected to the greater world as a whole.
