Alex Honnold Climbs Angola

Alex Honnold is the most accomplished free climber in the world. Angola is a southwest African country that recently emerged from 27 years of bloody civil war. What brings together these strange bedfellows you ask? Some of the most epic unclimbed rocks in the world, and a community needing help to diffuse the hidden land mines leftover from the conflict. (Plus a shadowy local hotel magnate, but we'll get into that later). This is Alex Honnold in Angola, for one of the most unique adventures of his storied climbing career this far.

This dude is a real hero - humble, doesnt chase the millions he couldve made from marketing, discusses ideas to help the earth, lives out of his van a lot of the time... This is the Michael Jordan of climbing. Nobody else is close to this dude....like hendrix - he has nobody ahead - he's creating the game. He puts fear in another place and defies biochemistry in how he controls fear/adrenaline... Straight up - he's a role model. Does it for the love and only the love.

I'm a big fan too, but to be fair, Alex is as likely as any climber to make the sport more lucrative for both himself and others. I am certain money hasn't, and never will become a primary motivation for him, but I also think the sport isn't exactly a gold mine that would make a great climber shift focus toward "chasing millions"; where are these millions? Even pretending for a second, that he did decide to focus on making as much money as possible, most likely, what he's doing would be the best way to continue to attract the kind of attention that can be parlayed into endorsement deals, movie deals and cash and he is doing that, which is great, because it allows him to climb constantly.

I know the feeling of this interaction with laughing and head shaking local people with huge interest - and youngsters trying immediately to climb too (and awesome good mostly). This is a real story told very sensitive. Alex is a quite special and an inspiring person - the foundation work is so adorable and his respectful attitude is an example for us all traveling over the globe with climbing as our guiding compass. That's what's so refreshing about him. Most people, when they're that good at something, they waste no opportunity to show it off. And in today's society, where we all get pushed into promoting our own 'brand', most people feel pressured to always present the most polished, most successful version of themselves. Alex genuinely doesn't seem to care. As long as he gets to climb, he's a happy dude. And I think that in a world full of insta-famous rolemodels we could use some more people like him, who know what's really important and don't try to change themselves to fit some kind of mold.

It's SO awesome he's spending his personal capital on projects like this, that help underdeveloped areas around the World. What better use of one's time, energy and money is there than improving the lives of people on the Planet who need it the most? Just look at how happy those children are, dancing around the first free and truly clean energy they've ever had. People in the developed world don't think about how something as simple as lights can make a huge difference, especially when after sunset it's complete darkness, making up to 12 hours a day virtually non-productive. I can't think of too many more worthwhile activities. 👍

i climb a lot as of late, and i understand what he means even if i use ropes, when i climb hard routes, i need full concentration in order not to fall, cos i not a very brave person when it comes to falling, i just hate it, and this kind of concentration makes you addicted, and apparently alex is not only a very very good climber but more important, he seems like being able to fully concentrate and control his mind and body during the whole climbing process, i would not be able to make more than 10 mts without having a heart attack xd

I am really glad to see this incredibly skilled young man doing service for others in need. In the end he will rewarded much more for this than his climbing achievements. Personal achievement is often a selfish ambition which is fine and propels people to the top of their field but doesn't make one truly happy. selfless service for others does.
