In the harsh desert of the American Southwest, famed climbers Alex Honnold and Cedar Wright summited 45 rock towers, biked 700 miles, and pushed their bodies to the limits, all in the name of an adventure they aptly dubbed "Sufferfest."

Standing on that ledge is the easiest and safest part of that half dome climb, but for normal people, standing up there on that ledge would be the scariest thing they could possibly experience. Lol
@AugustAdvice
@AugustAdvice 9 жыл бұрын
I was watching him with confidence until that scene where he starts freaking out, then I felt my entire body start freaking out almost feeling like I was on that ledge with him. I don't even know how he stood there, because my body would buckle. And I can't even tell what he's resting his feet on when he's climbing, it looks like nothing.

+AugustAdvice Its a climbing technique called smearing. The shoes you wear have really durable rubber that creates enough friction to hold yourself there with solid hand holds.
@TerjeMathisen
@TerjeMathisen 8 жыл бұрын
+AugustAdvice - I climbed that Half Dome route back in 1981, the place where Alex started to run out of concentration is the zig-zags, which is the technically most interesting part of the route (5.11 something afair), then he freaked out just above them on Thank God Ledge: You can either cross that ledge hand-over-hand, hanging below it, or you can walk across like he was doing when he locked up. With a rope and a couple of pieces of protection dropped into the crack by my feet as I walked along it was just a lot of fun, but I really wouldn't have like to do it unroped, even if it was just 10-15 feet off the ground instead of 1500+. From the video you can see that he's standing up in the beginning of the cut after the place he froze up, this probably means that he had switched to hand-over-hand to get across the narrowest spot.

EPIC!! I live in the southwest & the rocks are irresistable to climb; like you said, they have a siren call. I've done several rock climbs, alone, without gear or ropes. Nor any training. And unathletic, with close to morbid obesity. For some unfathomable reason, I cannot resist climbing. I'm also afraid of heights. Does not make sense. The most miraculous experience (I've had many), was back in 1994, at age 36, and I needed to cry out for a vision. I drove my car randomly, where I lived, in Sedona, Arizona. I felt pulled to a four-wheel drive unmaintained dirt road, & drove my basic Chevy sedan many miles, to a trailhead I'd never been to. Hiked 3-4 miles in, hadn't told anyone where I was going, because I never knew myself. It began raining & getting late, so the few hikers were departing Secret Canyon, as I walked in. I was glad, because I wanted to be alone. I decided to climb a red rock mesa there. It was hard, but I'd done the many rock formation climbs by myself, without anything. Once I made the steep climb, I hunkered down under a scrub juniper tree, for some protection from the elements. I had my vision, opened my eyes, and realized it was getting dark, & I had no flashlight. I quickly got up, and tried climbing down, but kept sliding, losing my balance, & it was getting dark. At one point, I stepped out on a ledge, for a better vantage point, to look for a faster & easier way to get down. Well, I found a faster way down. The ledge completely broke out from underneath me. I swore & closed my eyes. I don't remember the fall, just the landing. According to the laws of physics, the impossible happened. I mysteriously hit the trail, which was a ways away from the mesa, flat on my back, limbs akimbo. Exactly perfect, for it evenly distributed the weight of the impact. My clothes were somewhat torn, I was dirty, and had a branch of scrub manzanita bush under one arm. Later, discovered twigs stuck in my hair. The force broke my fanny back belt off me, and I had the wind knocked out of me. Unbelievably, I was completely uninjured, from a 300' fall. Plus, I'd somehow had been "teleported" away from the cliff, jagged rock face & boulders. Freaked me out for years. I went back to the mesa, many years later, after I'd moved away, to verify where I'd climbed and to validate it was what I remembered. Logically, there was no way it could be done. Has this ever happened to y'all, or do you know someone who has?

Lol, Brian. Divine Intervention is very real! Then I shouldn't tell you about the time I'd hiked down into a river canyon for the first time, and ended up scaling cliffs back out the same day, with only one working eye (no depth perception... so fun when rock climbing, eh?) and no water for 5 out of 6 hours of the climb? My tongue & lips swelled up from dehydration, just like in the movies. And from my panting from exertion, & groans of pain with every breath (I couldn't control it, I tried). I'd sustained serious facial injuries, so it was imperative I get medical help. I had help, but we were very lost trying to get to the traffic-less distant mountain road the car was parked off, at a pull out. He also abandoned me at one point, because I couldn't move any longer. By the Grace of God, when he'd given up himself, from exhaustion, he heard a car way above, and it gave him the strength to try again. Unfortunately, the road had been dynamited out of bedrock, so the last 200 ft were only loose, steep gravel. By the time I arrived at the ER for wound care & stitches (they had to call in a doc from his home), about 12 hours had elapsed since my injuries. We'd waited until dusk to climb out of the canyon, due to the heat. Still, the rock faces were so hot, I burned some of my hand skin off. I'm literally thin-skinned, so not hard to have this happen. That trip, I prayed very hard to make it out alive. The last part, I was trying to hold my flashlight under my chin, because it was so steep, I had to crawl like a spider. I instantly lost my flashlight, but because of my height phobias, I felt it was better I couldn't see, anyway. The loose rocks caused me to slide down, but I just kept scrambling upwards, no matter what. I got up first to the road, and then I laid face down, extended my arms down over the edge, and helped Marty up the last bit. From using muscles I never had, I couldn't move for a day, nor walk for two, after the strenuous climbs. Marty developed rheumatoid arthritis right afterwards, from the epigenetic trigger of the strain. Which ended up crippling him :( He let me know he blamed me for his disease, when he was alive. God bless him. I've had many other adventures, wilder than these. Never had to butcher off my arm, like the poor guy in Utah. Yikes.
