Should you buy the 14" or the 16” MacBook Pro (M1 Max or M1 Pro) as a software developer? This video is a look at the difference between these from a software developer's point of view and what I've learned over the last few years of using a 16" machine.
Audio clip where I compare the speakers is in this video here: • MacBook Pro 16" vs 14"...

For the "columns" measurement, you probably should close VS Code's side bar. They didn't look equal in size in the brief glimpse shown. (Yes, I know this isn't a scientific measurement but hey -- we're pedantic programmers here)

One thing to mention about the trackpad and running out of space is that, if you do run out of space you can literally just keep the original finger pressed down where it is at the edge of the trackpad and then use a finger from your other hand to continue dragging as much as you like from anywhere else on the track pad. As long as the original finger press is still held down you can drag and lift the other finger as much as you like and it will keep moving.

Agree with you on the size issues on an airline. I run a 2012 MBP, and I feel cramped. Yet, here I am, considering the 16” model-because that is my preference. If (or more correctly) when I fly again, I will just have to live with the cramped airline usage. At least I know the machine will run cool on my lap. But with that said, the 14” vs 16” size is worth mentioning on this.

I did the same. Reason for me is mostly frontend. It’s very convenient to have bigger areas to work with in responsive web. Even when I do more backend stuff I tend to use lots of terminal windows, and it’s nice to be able to view many of them at the same time. I have external monitors, but I really value the times when I don’t have access to them. Like in meetings or other stuff.

Thanks for the real world review! I am typing this on a 2018 Macbook pro 13" The system is great and I hands down love the trackpad but the keyboard is lacking for any serious typing, screen is too small, the font too tiny AND increasing the font messes with the layout on the screen. Is the 14" any better - noticeably better than the 13"? Or do I need to go the 16" ? I like the 14 but I am replacing a desktop soon and need something portable with a keyboard for typing, decent default font size and a display that looks "proper" where I do not have to strain my eyes to read. Thanks!

Alex (or anyone reading this with the knowledge), do you have any thoughts on 14” specs? I’m in the VERY early stages of learning development and am leaning toward buying the 14” and am quite confident that the base model will be overkill for anything I’ll be doing anytime soon. But, for the sake of future proofing a little I’m considering spec-ing it up a little. Would you think money is better spent going up to 32gb ram or the 10core CPU?

Can you show VSCode with a vertical split? typically on a smaller device (incl my 15") id hide the project file list (cmd+b), turn off the minimap (View -> Show Minimap) and use it with a vertical split, e.g. code on left, test code on right. Often with the integrated terminal at the bottom too.

In the Apple Store with VSCode, I can tell you from actual hands-on experience that the 16" provides much better screen ergonomics than the 14". BTW, I was using 19pt font size on both the 14" and 16". Also, I closed the minimap and file navigator. In short, the 16" is perfect for vertical split-screen development but the 14" would require one to do a lot more horizontal scrolling. I have Late 2013 15" MacBook Pro and I plan to go with a 16" M1 Max with 64 GB RAM, 32 GPU, and 4 TB SSD.

I would suggest upgrading to 32GB. I have 2019 Macbook pro i9 with 16GB. Having Chrome open and running build or just running the game in Unity almost maxes out my ram. Usually at around 13-14GB out of 16. Super easy to max out 16GB at least for me when I have more that 1 project running in Xcode or. Unity. and some other apps in the background. Waiting for my 16" m1 Max with 64GB ram right now!

If M1 Max does not need so much cooling as the previous i9, why did Apple make the laptop thicker, heavier and bulkier?
@Anonymous-vh9tc
@Anonymous-vh9tc 2 жыл бұрын
It absolutely doesn’t, no need to question it. I have 3 high refreshing rate high res monitors plugged in and the bottom doesn’t even get warm no matter what I do. My old 2019 gets toasty as soon as I plug in a 4K display and it gets really loud.
@Anonymous-vh9tc
@Anonymous-vh9tc 2 жыл бұрын
Also to answer you question, the new shape is more uniform where as the old one tapers off, they are about the same thickness. The air intake on the new ones are a lot larger. I think apple wants the laptop to run without audible fan noise 99% of the time

Because of more ports, especially HDMI and also because of liquid retina display. That's why it is thicker.

Should I buy M1 13inch MBP (16gb, 512gb) or the 14inch (base variant 16gb, 512gb)... Android developer primarily.. But here the 14inch is costing almost 1.5x the 13inch (seems a bit too much for me) How much difference would it create on a day to day life? Is it worth it? Looking for your suggestions. Thanks.

If you are going for an M1 base chip get the max book air - the MacBook Pro M1 is not worth the extra money. Then M1 MacBook Air is fantastic for android/Xcode development work for the price.

Get an m1 MacBook Air with 16gb. The 13" pro is not worth it, the air gives pretty much the same performance for cheaper.

Hey, also an Android Developer here. If you decide to buy an M1 mac, definitely buy 16gb ram. I recommend air over pro cuz there are almost no differences between them and air is cheaper.

I'm torn between 14" and 16", as well as torn between M1 Pro 10 core and M1 Max. I am leaning for the 14. I hate the fact the menu breaks with the notch on the 14, because I do have a lot tools that have many menu items and many status icons. I do want portability, because I'll code on top of a mountain or coffee shops. I also have an ultrawide at home. So maybe smaller screen isn't a problem at home. I don't know anymore. What about performance, I'm a web dev and I've got docker running and couple of servers running too. So maybe it's more Ram intensive rather than an M1 Pro 10 core or M1 max?

Performance is basically the same on the 14inch or 16inch. If you want the portability and have a nice monitor at home then I’d go with the 14inch. 🙂
@ricosrealm
@ricosrealm 2 жыл бұрын
If you are at home most of the time for work, then just go 14" and use the monitor. 14" is going to be better on the go, but if you travel a lot and need the extra real estate, then go for the 16". Other than that, I think the cooling is another issue... 16" does stay cooler than the 14" but this is only for heavy CPU tasks like rendering 3d scenes.

are you running VMs and with current work flow have you checked your memory usage? TBH I was most concerned about that with multiple environments open, too many tabs, and VM if you need it but memory swap seems to handle it pretty effectively. I've seen comparisons betwen 16 and 32 gb and higher still has memory swap occurring. I think most people can still run the base model 14 with a heavy workflow and be more efficient than most of the systems that devs are currently using.

I'm really in doubt here.. as a dev, we usually work in full screen mode for apps anyway (VSCode, Browser), so is it really really that much better with 16" vs 14". If you cannot see all your lines of code without scrolling, you should probably refactor anyway :)

@@BrieoRobino My initial comment was meant to be a little humorous, but it does turn out I CAN spawn more threads and run faster scripts on the M1 than my previous windows machine, a Hades Canyon SOC. I'd hit diminishing returns on the intel chip and have to dial back the number of threads, but on the M1 I can add a few more and get some extra speed out of it. Anyhow, that's cool.

You're not going to be just coding for 21 hours. Might want to throw some compilation in there. Building in Xcode, Building with gradle/maven. these things eat battery life if you've ever worked on medium to large sized projects. With 16 inch you're realistically looking at 6-7 hours battery life when it's at 100% capacity brand new. When looking beyond 5+ years - because this computer is a long term investment - you'll be seeing around 4-5 hours coding time with it's battery.
