Nissan's Versa is no longer the least expensive car in America. Instead of targeting the most budget conscious shoppers on the market, Nissan is going after a more fickle shopper: the one looking for value. Does the Versa's long list of standard features and new-found good looks change the subcompact game in America? Let's find out.

I agree about the Altima's quality. I've had two Altimas now, 2004 and 2009. And they both gave me the worth of my money. No disappointments, it drives awesome, no major problems. The only.problem I've had is the dealership service. They never fix the simple problems I've had. They seem to not fix them intentionally for me trade it for a new model. I think this is their technique to sell you a newer car. As for my Pathfinder, I've got lot of issues, minor and major, but it was good thing that all these happened when there was still warranty on it.

Another balanced review and I always appreciate your comparison with similar vehicles. A friend just rented a 2020 Versa SR and I was impressed, given the price of the car. I am concerned about the long-term reliability of the CVT but I think this is a problem that Nissan has addressed. When looking at your review of the Hyundai Venue, you said you were disappointed in the noise level of the Versa but here you say that the car is quiet for the class. Not sure what to think. Or perhaps you were referring to the old Versa (2019?). My friend's Versa was not too noisy and the seats were quite good. I might prefer the Kicks and hope to do same day comparison drives of the Kicks, Kona, and Soul.

I was considering a new car at the end of the year. I did call a Nissan dealer to check on Versa. The impression that I got was that it was not possible to buy a manual transmission Versa. I would only lease a CVT Versa. Nissan is offering great value in affordable cars, but they have a bad reputation with CVT reliability. But they were offering good lease deals but with too short mileage allowance. Unfortunately, my new car search ended when I got some insurance quotes.I live in a high cost area. I think the new Versa looks great.

As someone who used to sell new Kias and Toyota’s. The Rio has typically been my top pick. Although it is a bit disappointing the only active safety tech available to it is Forward Collision warning / avoidance on the Rio. But it’s reliability and often lower msrp is nice. I really am impressed with the new Versa and all the tech and value it offers at just under $20K in the SR trim. But that long term reliability out of Nissans hasn’t been the best in the last 10-15 years, more so on their CVTs. I’m really intrigued at how the new generations of the Versa, Sentra and Altima hold up going into the new decade here. Especially now that Nissan’s whole sedan lineup isn’t dated and ancient anymore

This is a good "appliance" vehicle. Not bad looking inside and out. Good price. Good MPG with low maintenance costs. Unfortunately, its a dull driver that is more A to B than anything. Nissan has been pushing this idea of a better built model. All the reviewers seem to be parroting it. Even if it is true, which is doubtful, they still have a very big problem. The reputation Nissan built up over a period of years. Plus, their way of selling these cars of late is serious discounts, rental fleet numbers, and selling to people with very low credit scores. Nissan has systematically destroyed its reputation over the past two decades; that sort of damage is very hard to repair. Even if they start building better cars which the evidence would suggest Nissan is not. If you want real value, stretch a little bit and get a civic or Corolla. If you want a cheap car, buy this thing.
@Poorgeniu5
@Poorgeniu5 4 жыл бұрын
imo, the standard/manual transmission is a better long term value in than the CVT.
@Pikminiman
@Pikminiman 4 жыл бұрын
That's actually an interesting question to explore. Nissan CVTs seem to have a bit of a reputation for poor reliability, which manifests as repair/replacement costs. However, the CVT delivers substantially higher fuel efficiency, which gives the car a lower cost of operation. If we had good data showing how many miles, on average, this CVT lasts before giving out or requiring repairs, we could figure out which option costs less money for the lifetime of the car. I did the math, but unfortunately I have no idea how much it costs to replace the CVT. Basically, the CVT saves you $1,000 on gasoline for every 75,000 miles you put on the odometer, assuming $2.80 per gallon gasoline, 35 MPG on the CVT, and 30 MPG on the manual. So, assuming a completely arbitrary $3,000 cost to replace the CVT, it has to last 225,000 miles to be more cost effective compared to the manual.

@@Pikminiman My 2017 Nissan Versa with 5 speed manual is getting 35 MPG highway(CVT 39). I'll pay a bit more for gas for the reliability of the manual transmission. @@gregzeigler3850 : Yeah, it appears that the robustness of the manual is probably worthwhile in this case. However, it is ridiculous to suggest that Alex has not driven a manual before. The only reason why anyone would buy a Kia or Hyundai is the waranty. Without that nobody would buy them. They also have their problems with timing chains for example. The main problem with Nissan is or was Carlos Ghosn. His one and only goal was to be no1 in sales worldwide and not the no1 in reliability. So Ghosn is gone and the new time for Nissan begin. Renault is not the main problem in US, they are the main problem for Nissan in europe because that´s the main market for Renault and Nissans lineup coultn´t be smaller there because of Renault. So the three main points Nissan has to do is more waranty and the customer would trust them, more reliability and the customer would trust them an more tech and no cost cutting.

I prefer the look of the Versa, but would probably opt for a Hyundai Accent/Kia Rio, since I actually care about reliability. Nissan is way too sketchy nowadays. Been there. Bought that. Learned my lesson the hard way. Personally, I'd spend the extra $2k or so and step up a size class for more room, safety, power, and refinement. Subcompacts typically get the same MPG as larger compact cars. Worth the extra bit of money, IMO. Sometimes the manufacturers offer rebates of different amounts that actually cause the more expensive compact cars to cost the same as the cheaper subcompact. That's been the case with Hyundais.

The best Versa is the Versa trim S with Manual Transmission. 2020 MSRP @ 14k, 2019 @ 12k. Used ones go for 1-3k cheaper. If you're looking to sell your car/trade it in, this is a good option. If you wanna keep your car for a long time without it breaking down often, you'd have to buy something else (Nissan isn't known for using quality parts). Overall, you'd get more value for your money with Honda/Toyota. Higher resale value, better reliability, automatic transmission has barely, if any, troubles. Don't get me wrong, I love Nissan. I wish they'd make better quality cars so they can get out of the financial situation they are right now. I'd hate to see a Japanese automotive company go out of business.

@@user-ry3le1zq9dI love all Japanese car brands, ALL! But what I'm not is a "Fanboy". My previous car was a Nissan so I don't have no problem buying a Nissan product, (unless it's the older stuff or the ones they have overseas). The problem I have with Nissan currently are them cost cutting and under engineering their cars, which in return have cost alot of people financial heartaches, and even though people keep complaining about their short-comings they continue on the same path. So what does that tells you? They don't care, and since that's the case they deserve to suffer.

With the failures of CVTs in this companies products, and the tremendous costs to owners, why would anyone ever purchase a Nissan product again. Nissan has failed their customers with refusing to take care of these junk transmissions. Warranty claims should be permitted for normal life expectancy of regular automatic transmissions or 10 years. We advise people against Nissan in particular, and make people aware that most will be unhappy with a CVT equipped vehicle, no matter what the brand. The problems with Jeep/Chrysler and Ford CVTs, and now those from Honda with the failures, have proven that a lot of work needs to be done before this product is ready for extended service.

I can't get past the 1.6NA engine. While I can accept it is a cheaper car, it hardly has more power than the 1.6's in the old Sentras from the 1980's. Bring a 3 cylinder turbo and at least it would get some more torque down low, and be more driveable in traffic. This car, in current form, is not even good enough for a rental fleet.

@@AAutoBuyersGuide It's true if you live somewhere with gas in the range of $2 a gallon you'll need to drive many miles to make it up on gas alone, but even in these states I suspect it's likely that you come out ahead with depreciation and other expenses or over the life of the car if you don't sell. (It was already pretty close even when the Versa was much cheaper.) I'm not sure where the market is for a subcompact that costs almost as much as a Kia Forte. It's not really compelling on value or cheap to acquire.
