T8 is Volvo-speak for an XC90 that is turbocharged, supercharged, AWD and a plug-in hybrid. All at the same time.

Seven years later, and I'm checking out a couple of used XC90 T8s in my area. The seemingly short EV range still works fine where I live for short trips to the grocery, but the turbo/supercharged engine is great for going through the Pacific NW mountains.

Want to add that the XC90 T8 is the only PHEV SUV with 7 seats. The Audi Q7 e-Tron, BMW X5 40e and Mercedes-Benz GLE 250e are only 5-seater a due to the battery location in the trunk.

hi alex, please provide a separate review on the safety features comparing with other cars. Such as adaptive cruise control, emergency braking, lane keep assist, etc. We have noticed a lot of new car manufactured having these features. Acura, Subaru, Volvo, Mercedes, etc are the car manufactured currently offer these safety features. We think these are the features that will help use decide on our future car purchase.

Running in pure EV mode does the heat operate or does the engine need to be running? I'm wondering for those of us in colder climates that want to drive in pure electric mode.

Back in the days I know there's city driving & highway driving. Now it is 2016, would you consider this SUV a "mixed" driving type of vehicle (both city & highway) if you don't have a heavy foot staying below 70 mph? Honestly, I wish they would have this SUV in diesel.

I think Volvo has told other T8 reviewers in Europe that the software for transitioning from gasoline engine to electric motor is still being tweaked to be smoother. The V60 PHEV, sold only in Europe, seems to do well in the the transition. And the Audi Q7 Etron PHEV will be a 5 seater. Audi put the battery mostly under the trunk area, leaving no room for a fold down third row, while Volvo put the battery where the drive shaft would normally be. The XC90 T8 is the only 7 seat PHEV on the horizon.

777Outrigger Mitsubishi Outlander PHEV has been out since 2013 and its a 7 seater. It also features better EV range than this Volvo and very similar numbers in 0-50mph times while maintaining better efficiency. New Pajero will feature second generation of PHEV setup that will find its way to 2016 Outlander.

+Tapacirer NS It's a tricky thing, reading about these new SUV's. Audi talks about the 2016 Q7 being a 7 seater, but they never say the PHEV Q7 Etron is a 7 seater. Same for the Outlander PHEV. I'm about 99% sure that it's a 5 seater. If it were a 7 seater, they would be making a big deal about it, like Volvo is about the 2016 T8 XC90. And Volvo has 30,000 sight-unseen pre-orders for the 2016 XC90. Volvo has not only been surprised by this, but by the take rate for the T8 PHEV, which is 20% of this number, where Volvo expected only about 3%. It seems that Volvo has the the 7 seater PHEV market to itself. So bigger battery, longer all electric range for the Q7 and the Outlander with only 5 seats, or the 7 seat T8 XC90.

In Canada I realize the XC90 T6 R-design is around ~$78k with taxes. The T8 R-design after tax is around ~$85k. However the govt. will actually subsidize ~$8500 due to the PHEV technology, making this an actual value leader. Sadly this doesn't carry over to the more expensive Inscription model: the T6 will cost ~$81k but the sad part is the T8 Inscription cost a hair over $75k which just makes it slightly over the "Tesla clause", meaning it only receives a meager $3000 off the purchase price. In that regard, the T6 Inscription will definitely be cheaper to buy & own. If only Volvo Canada realizes this and drops the price by just ~$750...

Alex, Which would you recommend? The 2016 Volvo XC90 T8 with all options or an X5 35i similarly equipped? The wife and I are currently looking at both of these vehicles and come out to about the same price.
@AAutoBuyersGuide

William S I would take the XC90 T6 over the T8 to be honest. The performance is slightly better than the X5 35i already and it lacks the expense and complexity of the hybrid systems.

TechExplorer Well, it depends on how much value the brand of Tesla, or a pure EV. The XC90 has a better ride, a much nicer interior and more cargo room than the Tesla. Handling is better in the Tesla, but mostly because of the lower center of gravity, curb weight is actually about the same. The Volvo is likely going to be safer over all and has more safety features optional and standard.

Alex on Autos I wonder if Tesla will ever lend you a vehicle for a "Review & Road Test" and a "Child Seat Review". I think the closest we got was the old Toyota RAV4 EV powered by Tesla. We sure could use your comprehensive insight.

Alex on Autos Compared to regular model premium seems awfully steep. Typically premium is half of that. Arguably with such small range it could also compete with Lexus hybrids in terms of typical combined mpg.
@syenosis
@syenosis 9 жыл бұрын
Alex on Autos I think the ride height might help the Volvo in a head on collision with another SUV or similar vehicle but I'm not sure you can really say one vehicle is safer than the other. The Model S has autopilot which is more advanced than Volvo's automatic cruise/lane keep system and far as I can tell only a car thief that crashed it into a pole unbelted doing 100mph managed to die driving a Model S. I don't think safety is really the differentiating factor between these two cars, they're both going to be tops in safety actually.
@AAutoBuyersGuide
@AAutoBuyersGuide 9 жыл бұрын
syenosis Volvo has actually beat Tesla to this (so has BMW actually). Tesla announced but has not yet released the self steering system and BMW and Volvo have. The rest of the radar cruise functionality is very similar except that the Tesla system cannot detect pedestrians or cyclists and the Volvo system can. Tesla will be offering a self-steering system that will operate above 35 MPH which is where the BMW and Volvo systems stop, that;s really the only improvement but that is not yet offered. While the Tesla Model S is safe, in objective safety tests the Ford Fusion actually bests it with better occupant protection according to the Euro NCAP tests. Keep in mind that the NHTSA test is not as detailed as the IIHS test or the Euro NCAP and Euro NCAP is the only one that gives detailed ratings and detailed load measurements. The Model S scored 82 for occupant protection, 77 for child protection and 66 for pedestrian detection. The Fusion/Mondeo scored 86, 82, 66. The new Mercedes C Class scored higher at 92, 84, 77. In addition Volvo has extensive experience in crash safety and the XC90 has safety features that don't factor into crash tests like deforming seat frames for protection when you run off road, articulating seat backs to reduce spinal loads in rear end collisions, anti-submarine seat belt designs to prevent sliding under the restraints, seat belt pre-tensioners and load limiters in all seating positions (Tesla just uses them up front), trear facing radar to detect rear end colisions, auto braking system that detects pedestrians and cyclists, etc. With all of that put together, it's a fairly safe bet to say that the XC90 is the safer car overall.

The closest comparable vehicle would be the Porsche E-hybrid Cayenne, plug-in Hybrid and seats 7. I was very hot on the T6 version until I drove, immediately realized the weakness of the 4 cylinder requiring the supercharger to get it going. Then I was interested in the T8, until I realized the $20K pop. Then I found a Cayenne Diesel, which blew the XC90 away (didn't need the 3rd row). Now waiting for my Model X. Couldn't quite get settled with the Chinese engine technology in the Volvo.

How is mpg-e measured...?
@AAutoBuyersGuide
@AAutoBuyersGuide 9 жыл бұрын
***** It's all formula based which is wacky enough, but the basis for MPGe is how much heat you get when burning a gallon of gasoline, 115,000 BTUs, then they make equivalent calculations to compare other fuels like natural gas, electricity, etc to achieve the same end. Problem is, you don't buy electricity in MPGe, you buy in kWh, so miles per kWh would be way more useful and if you wanted to compare then carbon emissions per mile or actual bottom line cost per mile is way more useful.
@1973TJM
@1973TJM 7 жыл бұрын
Regardless of the strange way MPGe is calculated, it should be consistent, manufacturer to manufacturer. I have a '16 Hyundai Sonata plug-in hybrid that is rated at 99 MPGe....which lets me compare it to other MPGe ratings... Regardless, it mostly is driven less than its 27 mile all-electric range, saving me tons on gasoline.

Cool car and great review as always, Alex. Any plans for an off-road review of these two vehicles? Do you think the through-the-road electric AWD system of the T8 hybrid would work well in light offroading, given the strong electric motor torque?
@AAutoBuyersGuide
@AAutoBuyersGuide 9 жыл бұрын
David Cuccia I may have a light off road review at some point. They are really not designed for anything rugged, none of the cars in this category are except maybe the GL. The eAWD system is mainly designed for snow, ice, gravel, possibly sand, light muddy roads, etc. It's not made for rock crawling, tree stump pulling, etc.

@mountainhobo 9 жыл бұрын
"The lithium-ion battery pack is just 9.2 KWh, and that means that even at 110 V it will only take about 9 hours to charge." -- That is the nicest way of saying, "despite the nearly $20K extra charge for the electric system, the battery is tiny, and even then, it still takes all night to charge". Alex, you should run for office.
@AAutoBuyersGuide
@AAutoBuyersGuide 9 жыл бұрын
mountainhobo On a plug in hybrid, I really don't care how fast the charger is as long as it charges overnight. I don't really see much benefit in paying even more for a DC fast charge connector. Of course I would have personally preferred a larger battery, FWD, ditch the supercharger, augment the 250HP turbo engine up to 300 with teh front motor and have it simply give you stellar economy driving around without a true EV mode.

I've owned 3 Volvos. They engineer every millimeter and stress the details. Americans will use this primarily in the metropolitan areas where the smaller lighter battery will take advantage of regeneration. If Volvo put it there its the most efficient and effective way to do it.

As a hybrid owner I will not buy another one. My choice would be something like the Cruze, because it costs only 17,000 and 5.3 cents/mile. If I bought a Prius or Volt costing 8 grand more and 4 c/mile, then it would take OVER 600,000 MILES FOR GAS SAVINGS TO COVER THE HYBRID PRICETAG. Even if gasoline doubled in current prices, it would still take 300,000 miles to reach the break-even point . The Chevy Cruze simply makes more sense from a financial standpoint .
