The Model OLED is interesting. It sports a flex cut PCB that serves a purpose of moulding to a curved plate. It's a nice touch and the overall board sounds pretty good with a fun typing experience.
The bottom finish on the unit I am looking at is PVDed and honestly, it's not the best PVD but it's not the worst. It's middle ground an I wish it was a bit better, with that being said I do recommend the standard alu version.

Really love the curve on this version of their homage to the Model M. Hope they'll make one without the OLED though.

It already exists, it's the Vortex Model M

OLED button to toggle solenoid is such a nice touch. Although I still don't like the screen. I would have preferred a classic flip switch there.

It took this keyboard to remind me that the old keyboards from the '80s were curved. Also very very old typewriters were curved too. They had to be.

Although the flex cuts thin out the noise... The solenoids make up for it imo.

I'm definitely curious what the curved plate is like to type on again... wonder if a flat profile like XDA or MOA would be better than Cherry due to the curved plate. I do kinda regret throwing away my IBM clone keyboard that did have curved plate. I know Alex typically doesn't mind stiff boards but I'm wondering if the bottom out is harsh or not since it does have the deep flex cuts. And it totally captures vibe of the Model M with some nice updates to the design (yes, I did use that and other IBM keyboards back in the day), I don't mind missing the gaudy led indicators for the top right.

Bruh, how do you not like that giant pvd mirror backplate???!!! So crazy you build a board like this today. I bought a Vintage 60s BNIB off MM and it arrives today. It also has a solenoid and buzzer.

CYL = Cylindrical. It's what GMK call their Cherry profile keycaps.

What is the difference between this and Vortex model M? Seems the same keeb with some extra stuff that is a bit questionable in my opinion. The model M is way cheaper

The first thing I noticed, besides de extra screen button, The Vortex M has a flat plate and pcb, as oppsed to the curved ones in the Model Oled (and IBM Model M SSK)

It was a proto unit! Apparently mine was the only be that had this issue and by alerting them about it they are taking a look at the solenoids they are using further

This isn’t a sub anything,anything. This is a prototype sent to Alex for exactly this reason. A red flag would be them not sending any units out to be fiddled with before selling a final product. And obviously you don’t care anyway, since you’re willing to spend half a stack on something you assumed was prone to breaking. 😅
