I have asked repeatedly for my tips on storing a motorcycle outside, so here we go! My biggest suggestions are to use a quality motorcycle cover that is sized and fitted appropriately for your motorcycle, as well as using a protective cleaner such as Honda cleaner / Honda polish on a regular basis. These quick outdoor motorcycle storage tips should help keep your bike in good shape!

I have a really long, thick chain. I chain it through the wheels and the frame. I have a hidden wireless alarm. I have two disk brake locks, one of which has a built in alarm. I lock the forks, hit the kill switch, and switch the gas to off. I lock to rail, not just in one spot but winding through the rail. I cover with a tarp so you can't easily see the motorcycle is a motorcycle.

Yes so glad you mentioned not chaining it through the wheel/tire so many people don’t know this this are shocked when there bike is stolen and all that is left is the chained tire 😂🤦🏾

All good advice Alex. One thing I would add; If you live in a windy area, and store outside with a bike cover then put the bike against a wall or fence on it's side stand rather than center stand. The bike in gear leaning away from the wall. This way if the wind gets under the cover (a big sail), it will stand the bike up to the wall and then set back on it's stand, rather than finding it on its side in the morning. Don't ask how I know. btw, don't try this with a Bmw ;-0

You’re an awesome humble guy Alex. Thanks for taking the time to help us new riders out. Don’t listen to the back-lashing. Really appreciate a person who tunes out the negativity to do what they think is right. Your info is super appreciated over here. Going to be getting my motorcycle license soon. Good luck on your great channel :)

Good informative video! I don't have a garage and in winter we have 3 months of snow. I am about to purchase my first motorcycle and your advice was very helpful. I am also considering actually riding my bike in the days there is no snow on the ground, so it wouldnt be just sitting there for 3 months straight. Thanks again for your video.

Thanks for this video Alex . I live 5 mins walk from the beach , so my bikes are very exposed to the elements of the salt air , even though stored in a shed , under a cover . When i wash the bike i blow dry it gently with a air compressor, blowing all water out of the allen key head bolts , and any other areas , then i shammy it , then i ride it for about 15 mins at speeds of 80 - 100 klms an hr to blow excess water out , amazing how much water comes out fro. All them nooks and crannys , then i wipe metal parts , fork tubes , bolt heads down with INOX - WD40 for protection against the elements whilst having a beer . Take care mate .

I store mine in the garden, we have like a 3 stair drop to get into my garden (pretty steep) so for someone to steal it, they would need to bring a big ramp, something to break the 3 locks on it. And my room window is right next to my garden so i could hear if anyone even enters my garden. I use 2 covers for it because i live in the england and we get a lot of rain. At the moment I'm looking to build (or buy) a little shed for it just so it can be extra covered and safe.

Here's my tip from keeping bikes outdoors for half a century .buy cheap covers (eBay £15) and throw them away every 12 months. Use ACF50 & socks over mirrors to stop them spitting the cover. No PVC windows and NO steel security rings on covers. must have buckle under engine and elastic on both ends around wheels. Forget expensive ones UV rays & -0 temperatures destroy all made made materials. Even GORTEX & system 2000 have warnings about over exposure to those elements. Best one I ever seen was one a woman made from a blue dumpy bag. The huge bags sand is delivered in by hiab's. Made on her sewing machine at home from two dumpy badges it will last for decades. So dumpy bag manufacturer's there's a business opportunity for you. You got the sewing machines. the material and workers. You could sell them for £50 instead of the £20 you charge for a dumpy bag...the material is woven nylon-PVC-plastic and can lift many tonnes in weight. It's like seatbelt material but thinner and is now made from recycled materials. Sorry for long reply but I've just bought yet another cover. A Neverland cover £14.16. cheap and cheerful. No thrills bells or bows.

Thanks, while it is not a bike. I own a honda ruckus and it is my primary mode of transportation. I also don't to ride to a self storage every day just to get to work and stuff. I live in Indiana were weather keeps getting more unpredictable each day. So it is a big concern of mine to keep it nice and running. As i don't have the space to store it inside. I have a bike cover but I feel like it wouldn't be enough. I was somewhat aware of washing but i will try out the honda stuff once I get it.

Good advice as always mate. I'd just add make sure your exhaust is cool before putting the cover on (learned from bitter experience many years ago!). I use wd40 on the whole bike, except tyres, brakes and seat obviously. Cheers mate (from Cambridge, England) 👍🏻

I'm over in Scotland we get a fair bit of snow and salt or even if you live in a coastal area id recommend the use of ACF50 which is a hydrophobic protective spray developed by US navy for use on their carrier born aircraft. So if its sprayed on a $130 million F35 its seems good enough for my £7k Honda. Loads of KZfaq demonstrations showing ACF50 application tutorials. Also I'd recommend the use of a battery tender/optimiser if not removing the battery prior to storage
@AlexSimmons11c
@AlexSimmons11c 3 жыл бұрын
Great addition Captain Average, thanks! I would have recommended the battery tender for storage as well if I had geared the video for winter or long term storage, but I was mainly gearing it just for motorcycles that are kept outside in general even when being ridden daily. Thanks!

I would add taking off the cover and finding shade on clear days between rainy days. Moisture on the ground evaporates up into bike and gets trapped, humidifying the interior. I live near the coast and find Valvoline Multispray is a great middle ground between WD40 and ACF 50, cost-wise. I go through tons of the stuff. Leaves a protective film that wd40 doesnt, but isnt as gloopy and dirt attracting as ACF 50. Have a Husqvarna swartpilen and enfield classic 500.

@orvillets8818 it does a good job, far, far better than wd 40 but not quite as long lasting as acf 50. Provides same film after evaporation, and holds up remarkable well for cost, as well as fact application is easier and less sticky. There's a good comparison video on youtube. If I find link I'll direct to you. BTW, I've used ACF 50 too.
