Hey everybody! Thanks for watching this video, "Is Drake Just a Scam Artist". Drake is commonly described as one of the best rappers of the last decade or so. He's extremely popular, (sometimes) critically acclaimed, and he's also a fantastic marketer. With his most recent single, Toosie Slide, it got me thinking of all the shady things he's done for fame/relevance/success. Between the age old debate of him being a "culture vulture", him stealing verses and riding waves, sports Drake, Care Package, trying to create a TikTok song, and more. What do you think?
Drake / Toosie Slide / TikTok / Scam / Steal / Genius / Accent / Athlete / Care Package / Music Video / Reaction / Review

I was going to say Scam Artists, BUT when he mentioned Quint Tarantino, that's when I realized that Drake is low-key a genius. I mean if he was a scam, people would be liking his music, but drake is giving people what they want. And it's music that fans find enjoyable. I agree it's not the best music, but the music he makes are like the newer Marvel movies. Honestly, they all have the same idea, yet people still come and buy tickets. that's what im thinking too. You don't have to like his music but he is VERY successful with what he is doing. As far as him "stealing" everything well if that's the case has he been sued over it? It would seem it would be mentioned he is in court all the time for the stuff. Or maybe its just that is what 'some' folks are calling it but others see it as showing respect which it can easily be looked at as. Every single little thing having to be "approved" is getting into being like the supposed Japanese salaryman workplace. Lol

I agree to a point. I don't think he stopped caring about RAPPING rapping. I think he just went with what's popping at the time and didn't put that much into it as time goes on. Believe it or not, most artists do this anyway. But Drake seems to be the biggest offender. For me, I'm a Body-of-work guy, and Drake's album arc have been interesting to hear. It seems to me that he always looking for that one project that will make him seen as respected for his craft, but he always seem to fall into temptation for what seems to be hot at the time when things don't go his way. It may have been happening before hand (I'm not sure), but I kinda saw that after Views came out. He was putting it on a pedestal as his love letter to Toronto, this HUGE album, like an instant classic almost. And then, when it didn't do that great, he said he was releasing a "Playlist" or "Compilation" album, which turned out to be More Life. In the meantime, goes on a feature run (Skepta, BlocBoy JB, etc.) to stay hot, as usual. Then, he tried it again with Scorpion. Again, didn't do that well either. Back to the feature run! It's really fascinating to see. He's still putting out good music. It's just that he's a little too busy chasing what PEOPLE want him to make instead of what HE wants to make.

He stopped caring as soon as he took someone else's words and made them his. Nowhere else but in music can you do that. You cant take a painting and say i did it. So why can you take a whole song and perform it with only you credited? Those Quinten songs are covers. Not drakes songs.

JulCaos Drake WAS good, but I totally understand why you wouldn’t want to listen to him because of all the bullshit he’s done the past 5 years. He was pioneer along with Kid Cudi, Wale, and Kanye in the late 2000s, but ever since 2015 he traded that relatable/soft image for being “hard,” which is evident in the way looks, dress, and acts now. Plus, he talks about sending hits on people. That shit is mad corny. IYRTITL is the last time he tried as a solo artist.

@@OathBoy_562 I've never even heard kmt. I don't even know if thats the name of the song or an abbreviation of it. Drake might make good music, but its because he cherry picks trends that are on the come up in the underground scene and just turns it into a pop song thats guaranteed to get 100 plays a day on every radio station. Maybe that makes him smart, but some would question if you could even consider him an "artist". An artist puts in the work and takes the enormous risk career wise because they have true passion for the music they create. If drake wants to play the music industry game, and create music for absolutely no other reason than a financial one, more power to him. But he can't be surprised when the true artists that he has undeniably, "taken inspiration from", lash out. They are just looking to make enough money to pay this months rent, while a mega millionaire is biting their sound in order to shit out another pop radio hit.

The difference between Tarantino and Drake is, as was stated, Tarantino puts a spin on his projects. Yes, he may borrow ideas from other film makers but he does it in a considerate and passionate way. You can tell Tarantino loves his art and always puts his all into his films. Drake however, blatantly steals from other artists and does what he can to stay relevant to appeal to the general public. At one point, he did care about the music and the industry. He let his riches and fame consume him, so now he will either A) pander to the fans of his old music or B) create a project that only serves to further fufill his monetary gain. I find it hard to respect Drake in the same light filmmakers respect Tarantino. Everything seems so fake with Drake; where with Tarantino it is evident he puts time and effort into his films. Most of which are very enjoyable and are celebrated as pop culture icons (Pulp Fiction, Kill Bill, Inglorious Bastards)

@WindyAura Tarantino is controversial, he's used up scenes from lesser known films to his advantage, counting on the American public of not having seen them. Eventually, every artist takes from another but Tarantino is just as blatant as Drake is. Its interesting how the comparison is brought up, Tarantino has an almost cult like following, I have 3 movies I love, made by him. If research is done, its easy to see how he stole foreign ideas and recreated these films to his advantage, putting the traditional Hollywood hero, white man/woman. It is what it is with Tarantino, at the end of the day, he is a cultural vulture, the best kind since he's went unnoticeable.

A large part of hip hop is based on using shit without making the previous artist benefit. Hip hop was legit created by rapping over other genres. Look at the trouble producers go through to flip a sample to the point where they dont have to pay to clear it. Look how many times people got fucked financially after copyright claims on samples or used melodies. Migos literally took someone elses flow and then said they created it. Soon after everyone in hip hop copied it 😂. All of these lil rappers that used to be carbon copies lil wayne plus now youve got young thug and future clones. Yes he has done some suspect shit but its funny to me how everyone shits on drake and at time ignore the unoriginality of a huge sector of hip hop. @@L14-t6n Yea, people that say Drake only makes "Pop Music" are closed-minded and never gave his other music a chance. They literally only listen to his "pop" songs. And I don't blame him. If you're pop songs sell more, then why stop? I appreciate music, but I won't knock the hustle. You gotta get it how you can.

This is an interesting conversation. I love Drake, but I do understand and appreciate your perspective on this. Believe it or not, most artists tend to do this anyway. It's just that Drake seems to be one of the biggest offenders. On the music side of the conversation, I can admit that he does stuff like "Toosie Slide" (Which is ok, btw) that is obviously pandering to the TikTok trend and stealing full verses from other rappers (i.e. YG's "Who Do You Love?") is just flat stealing. However, for some reason, he always seem to find a way to make it where people can enjoy it. Like, I can still listen to that WDYL verse and still enjoy it despite knowing that he lifted half of it almost word-for-word. It's weird for me. As for the accents, I think it could be trend-hopping and him having a connection with those places as well. I mean, he did have family in Tennessee via his dad. It's strange. If any other rapper did any of this, more people would've called them out on it and sooner. But since Drake is... well... Drake, he has a bit more leeway. Again, that's an interesting question that's going to cause a lot of discourse in the comments. Also, I don't know if this would to the conversation, but there's a book called "Steal Like An Artist" by Austin Kleon. I haven't read it (Though I plan to), but from what I've read about it, it talks about how to stay creative in the digital age and how that nothing in original. I think it could add some depth to this.

Anthony Smurthwaite If you view music as a form of entertainment, which more people probably do, drake is the most streamed artist of the 2010s, and so entertaining the most people. Maybe you don’t think his music holds up to high scrutiny as art, compared to less commercially successful artists, but there’s no way drake is just mediocre as an entertainer.
