Cool Forgotten Weapons merch! shop.forgottenw...
In the mid 1980s, an Italian designer named Alphonso Giambelli developed a bullpup pistol-caliber carbine with hopes of selling it to Italian law enforcement. That never happened, but the gun was offered on the commercial civil market as the semiauto AGM-1 by a company named Algimech (after ALphonso GIambelli). At least a handful of these carbines came into the US before the 1989 assault weapons import ban, chambered for 9mm Parabellum and 9x21mm. they were also offered in a variety of other calibers (.45 ACP, .45 HP, .22LR, .22 WMR) but it is unclear if any of those were ever manufactured.
The AGM-1 has an 18" barrel and uses slightly modified Browning High Power magazines for both 9x19 and 9x21mm. The barrel is easily removed, and there is nothing particularly complex about its design.

This seems like a surprisingly well thought out bullpup, especially for how old it is. Combine that with it being available in a bunch of different cartridges, I'm kind of surprised that it wound up being a low production number gun. I think it would be cool to have one of these today, let alone back when they were brand new.
@jonathanlunger2775

People still don't really buy bullpups today, inspite of seemingly everyone liking the idea of a smaller package. If you look back in history where full-sized rifles were becoming full size battle rifles, were becoming the full size, early "assault rifle" it makes sense that people didn't see value in a gun that was probably expensive and certainly was viewed as underpowered as a primary arm when the prevailing theory was still that a full length rifle worked just fine anyway.

At the beginning of the production the carbine was not simple blow back action but was a delayed below back. The delayed action was made by spring loaded ball bearing (I don't remember where) between the bolt and the receiver.
@DreadNought0255
@DreadNought0255 2 жыл бұрын
That's cool. When you look at the bolt, you see there's some kind of a plug on the side filling a hole. Seems likely that that is where the bearing delay system could of been. I don't see any other reason for there to be a hole to plug in that spot and it does not appear to be a component.

Most of the "by name" assault weapon ban lists were created by legislative staffers going through gun magazines and catalogs, and going. "Yeah, that one looks scary!" While I don't remember these *at all*, I wouldn't be surprised if, between puff pieces in gun magazines and the Gun Digest annuals, it wasn't featured fairly often. After all, at the time, the only 9mm long guns I was really interested in at the time were the relative merits of the CAR15 9mm, MP5, Ingram, Steyr, and Uzi in their full auto configurations.

The Al.Gi.Mech AGM-1 was banned from importation by the 1989 Gun Ban. It was classified as a "semi-automatic assault rifle" (having a full pistol grip, detachable magazine and muzzle brake). The factors against it were that it came in a "high-powered" (i.e. centerfire) cartridge, a detachable magazine larger than ten rounds, and no justifiable hunting purpose.

Meaning a .22 semi-automatic with black furniture, and designed to look like an AR is more likely to be listed than a more powerful rifle that's got lots of wood furniture and doesn't look ominous - like an M-1, or likely even a semi-auto BAR conversion or reproduction. It's because we keep electing people who are completely unqualified to office. The person who writes gun laws probably doesn't know the difference between 9x18 and 7.62x51. It's the same with the people writing law for technology and anything else. They have no idea what they're doing. We should kick them all out and elect some engineers and scientists. Even if they've never seen a gun before they can at least understand the difference between a 300J 6g projectile vs a 10g 3500J projectile. I would elect an engineer, even if they weren't good at name calling or blaming other people for their mistakes like other politicians.

I feel like there is little point producing a bullpup in a moderate power pistol cartridge, velocity gain for those is fairly minimal past about 8-9 in of barrel length, and can actually even start decreasing after about 16 in as the pressure drops. Just a bad idea.
@alexanderstrickland9036
@alexanderstrickland9036 2 жыл бұрын
It keeps overall length down. Especially for non sbrs. Easier stowage, better maneuverability, yada yada. It’s still dumb but there is a reason to bull pup them.
@concinnus
@concinnus 2 жыл бұрын
@@alexanderstrickland9036 Governments don't mind if they're SBRs though, and they're the only ones who could make this commercially viable, or care that much about handling. Plus, with pistol calibers you just stick the magwell in the grip like an Uzi; bullpup doesn't gain as much as on a rifle caliber.

@LabRat Knatz The laws are what they are, and manufacturers have to deal with them. It doesn't seem like the market would be that much larger without the tax stamp requirement anyway.

If stories are to be believed those were guns that had been paid for but an import license had not been approved before the 1989 assault weapon import ban. To avoid a complete wash they were brought over as parts kits and assembled in a very remote area of Douglas county back in the days of rural route addresses. The company folded soon after but Algimech isn’t the only gun with their name on it. Once again that’s if stories are to be believed

Nice compact design, surprised they didn't make a shotgun version, to sell as a breaching weapon, close defense weapon, as well as general release item. The use of magazines, would mean quick reloads, plus the short barrel would be good in streets and buildings, as there are many small spaces in both in many places in Italy's towns and cities.
@BatCaveOz
@BatCaveOz 2 жыл бұрын
I am unaware of anyone ever upsizing a submachinegun or pistol caliber carbine into a shotgun. Also short barreled shotguns are prohibited in most countries, thus limiting sales to police or military. Police and military don't like short barreled shotguns due to inaccuracy and risk of stray pellets. Specialised breaching weapons represent an incredibly small opportunity for sales and are often better served by a manually operated action (eg pump action) as they can more reliably cycle specialty rounds, which often fail to work in semiautos.

You don't understand how specific the recent trudeau gun ban gets. It mentions by name stuff like 17 different missile launchers, 39 different rocket launchers (not to be confused in case canadian gun law wasn't already pretty clear about civilian owned heavy ordinance.) and one gun named the "Modulo Masterpiece Wizard Extreme Long Range Match" Which I have no idea what it is and what it does but boy does it sound mighty! I'm willing to bet that canada has never even seen at least 50% of these guns.
