I used to get told that no one will love me like he does. No one will understand me or put up with me like he does. That I was perfect. Yet everything I did was wrong. My cooking was wrong. My job was wrong. The intimacy wasn’t good enough. And when I finally left, he still controlled me over the phone for a year. I can’t wait to see this movie. Just remember that in leaving, you may not feel immediately what you think you will but the fact that you did it will change your life forever in a way that will save it. You deserve more. No relationship is better than only one relationship that keeps you captive and alone.

Thank you for sharing what you’ve been through! proud to see you made it out stronger than before! I broke up with my ex one year ago and now he is literally blowing up my phone black mailing me , threatening to leak personal info to my friends and family. I told him I would get a lawyer and restraining order but he still won’t stop…

Laura E - that's hard to read. But I'm glad to see that you moved on. I don't know anyone like this but it's handy to know so one can watch out. I worry about my teens entering a relationship that has negative components like this. Did people close to you recognize/realize his controlling tendencies?

I've seen relationships like this; not only is it terrible for the victim involved but destroys family connections and friendships... The victim slowly isolates herself and then tries to rationalize that it's "us against the world". Hope this can be a wake up call for many people in a toxic relationship.

And this is why one of the biggest red flags in a relationship is 'I don't want you to spend so much time with your friends' or any variation of it. I encourage my fiancé to go out with her family and friends because living too close isn't healthy for either of us.
@JakeBor

Good luck with that. Her friends will be the ones encouraging her once she's decided to divorce you.
@Lurklen

@@JakeBor I mean, good? That's what friends are for. Should he want his fiancé to only be with him because he didn't let her out of his sight or spend time with other people? Things will work out between them, or they won't. That's life. If it's gonna happen, it's gonna happen. Just enjoy the time you have with people. Not all relationships last forever, that's fine, doesn't mean they don't have value. If things stop working, or people change, it's okay for the relationship to change too. It's a good thing. Why would anyone want to stay married to someone who no longer wants to be with them?
@JakeBor
@JakeBor Жыл бұрын
@@Lurklen No. Not good. It's a sin to encourage another to sin, even if they're a friend.
@Lurklen
@Lurklen Жыл бұрын
@@JakeBor I mean is divorce a sin? In which religion? Who was talking about sin anyways, he was talking about supporting his partner and you brought up divorce. But okay lets get religious. You know what else is a sin? Self righteousness and selfishness. "Do nothing from rivalry or conceit, but in humility count others more significant than yourselves. Let each of you look not only to his own interests, but also to the interests of others. ~ Philippians 2:3-4" If she's unhappy, why should he make her stay? Because it pleases him? How selfish. Who are you to judge the pain or blessings of others. Her friends putting her needs above their own concerns is the very opposite of that. You know what else is a sin? Fear and fearmongering. "Fear not, for I am with you; be not dismayed, for I am your God; I will strengthen you, I will help you, I will uphold you with my righteous right hand. ~ Isaiah 41:10" What good are you putting into the world by trying to taint this person's life with fear? You think you're serving your God by spreading these ideas of the worst outcome to strangers just sharing some part of their lives? Sounds like for someone of faith you're living in fear dude. Another one? Okay, how about pride. "But he gives more grace. Therefore it says, “God opposes the proud, but gives grace to the humble.” ~ James 4:6" "Everyone who is arrogant in heart is an abomination to the Lord; be assured, he will not go unpunished. ~ Proverbs 16:5" This guy is talking about how much he cares and trusts his partner, about the way they try to ensure the welfare of their relationship, their mental wellbeing, and you have the pride to think you know their life better than them. Who are you? What gives you the right? Here's two more for good measure. Gossip and Judgement. "Let no corrupting talk come out of your mouths, but only such as is good for building up, as fits the occasion, that it may give grace to those who hear. ~ Ephesians 4:29" "Whoever goes about slandering reveals secrets; therefore do not associate with a simple babbler. ~ Proverbs 20:19" and "So then each of us will give an account of himself to God. Therefore let us not pass judgment on one another any longer, but rather decide never to put a stumbling block or hindrance in the way of a brother. ~ Romans 14:12-13" It sounds like if you're worrying about sin, the first place you should look is in the mirror. Me, I'm not religious, I don't pretend to be. So I can judge all I want, and I'm saying you're bit of a wazzock, and you should keep your mouth shut if you have nothing nice to say. Take care!

I can relate. He wanted me, he made me leave a partner of 20 years, he trapped me emotionally then turned his back and when I made a move he moved backwards and when I tried to leave he moved forward. He said that he couldn't live without me. He needed me but didn't want me. It took me five years, my best years, it cost me a relationship, some friends, my house and my money but I got free. A year or so later I looked at him one day when he asked to meet as a sad pathetic person. I have been alone since 16 years now, I won't take that chance again. They have good camouflage.

I had many reasons to leave him other than the influence of my narcissist, years of domination and control and refusal to have children wore me down so meeting this guy just pushed me over. I know these dramatic, suspenseful iterations of abuse make for good entertainment, but when it's the only way abuse is portrayed, it creates this idea that there is only one kind of abuse. The general public thinks an abusive relationship always looks like this because it's all they've seen, and while it CAN look like this, it often doesn't and focusing solely on this dramatized version means that the less overt, less dramatized abuse gets to fly under the radar. I wish someone could capture the subtle, insidious abuse that most women being abused live with, often because they aren't actually able to identify what's happening to them. I personally lived with abuse for 5 years because I thought if I wasn't being hit, stalked, or threatened ominously, it couldn't be abuse and it was disrespectful to "real" victims for me to even compare my situation to a "real" abusive relationship. Most abuse is nearly imperceptible! Where's THAT movie??
