It has been confirmed that Alien: Romulus will take place between the events of Alien (1979) and Aliens (1986), but just how directly will it connect following the events of the first film? I'm taking a look at a prominent theory today, but, be warned, this could be a spoiler.

I'm having a hard time believing that in the shear vastness of space, Big Chap would suddenly 'bump' into what? A ship? A Station? Space is just too freaking big for that to happen. Ripley was a one-in-a-million save because she drifted into a shipping lane known for scavengers specifically *looking* for salvage. I dunno, I'm willing to suspend my disbelief for a lot, but this feels like one helluva stretch.

It always seemed to me that WY knew precisely where the Narcissus was and was waiting to bring her in for some reason. A change of leadership after Nostromo was lost maybe- who cares? The same way they knew to send wild-catters out exactly where to hunt for the Derelict. Nostromo was likely in a commercial shipping route and their emergency beacon- the black box- would automatically launch on initiation of autodestruct. With the existing flight plan they had to have filed, wouldn’t take a great stretch to find the beacon. That said, they could likely find Big Chap’s remains, but absolutely nothing living survives extended hard vacuum exposure.

I have a lot of problems with Ridley Scott’s theory that they can regenerate. We’ve seen thousands of them killed with all sorts of weapons and means. And never have we seen any sort of regeneration (and yes, I get that Scott wasn’t involved in most of those situations) but this doesn’t seem like the right time to set a new precedent.

@@whatsmolly5741 It is a massive plot hole because you see them shot down in droves in Aliens. You literally see Vasquez take one out with a small caliber pistol. Alien: Isolation the game is already a great "Alien 1.5". To do something in the same universe that isn't too similar to the game, means you've gotta do something that doesn't include finding LV-426 again, tracking the Nostromo, etc. but you still want something that's gonna link back the first one... but ALSO make it a stand alone movie that you don't need to watch all the other Alien movies to get what's going on. It's a tall order.

Studios almost never a give a flying f about the value games add to an IP. No matter how well written, or how much and in impact it makes on the fans, movies almost never incorporate the lore of a game. A director may pull inspiration from a game but will never, ever respect the hard work good game devs put into their games. They may rip and steal themes or motifs or even direct story lines, but will never credit or even work along side games and their devs. In this case, I would be extremely surpised to see the director mention anything even remotely about isolation, no matter how many similarities there are. There’s slim to none chance the dude even games, let alone knows what isolation is about.

Please god no. The probability of finding that xeno drifting around the vastness of space is ridiculously low. There's no need to test the audience's capacity to suspend their disbelief for such an irrlelevant plot point. As far as we know, "Big Chap" is not unique among the xenos, so there's no paritcular benefit to resurrecting it. Besides, I prefer that the alien universe expand beyond the events covered in the movies. Let's get some new encounters with new xenos. I want to see Romulus set a precendent for future directors to tell xeno stories that don't trace back to Ripley's storyline.

My hope despite the xenomorph recovered being Bigchap is that Alien Romulus doesn't retcon or ignore Alien Isolation since if the movie takes between the original Alien(1979) and Aliens(1986) then things won't be ignored. If it takes place years before or after Isolation then we can say the game still has merit since Isolation has Amanda Ripley facing the same horror that her mother encounter. The game also answers why nobody ever heard of or encountered the Xenomorph on Acheron or even picked up the same distress signal that was on the derelict ship.

@floydvchuter5814
@floydvchuter5814 2 ай бұрын
@@louisazraels7072 exactly, think of how the eggs lay dormant for decades, if the hive is dead it is the responsibility of the first born (most likely a drone) it's job is to create a queen, and therefor establish a new hive. To this end it's first priority is to create a queen egg/face hugger to produce a queen and probably a new host. Like insects I imagine more than one, and the first born probably kills the others to become the dominant queen. When a queen either ant or bee starts to get old, or dies, some of the larvae are fed a special food, usually referred to as royal jelly. The larvae who eat this develop differently than the larvae who don't, and become queens. In the original script/screenplay by Dan O'Bannon and Ronald Shusett, (before Hill, Giler and later Scott got their hands on it) the alien was part of a ritual breeding ceremony of a long dead civilization that had evolved to a point where they could no longer reproduce naturally, they were advanced and designed this go between to help keep the species thriving, something devastated this civilization and what was once science degraded into a cult like religion. The way it was written and their notes indicate that the creatures born from this process were feral and dangerous but would continue to evolve into their core intelligence species, cultivated and groomed by their elders. Something happened and the civilization completely collapsed and the cycle was broken. This is what was written on the Walls of the breeding temple/ pyramid they found after exploring the derelict spacecraft. A ship that like the Snark/ Leviathan/ later called the Nostromo was unfortunate to have land there some time in the past and had its crew decimated by the door, their hybrid children long dead to the sands of time. Of course the temple was a trap waiting to be sprung by the next unfortunate souls who happened to stumble upon it. These scenes were all excised from the script because it was deemed too expensive. Once O'Bannon convinced Ridley that Giger should design the creature it's evolution slowly began to change during production, of course Hil wanted to turn it all into a story about humanity creating the creature as a bio-weapon and the crew of the Nostromo stumbled upon it responding to an emergency beacon. That's where the parts about Ash were introduced. Later Cameron fed into the idea of this being some alien insect-like species when he wrote Aliens, partially borrowing from Heinlein's Starship Troopers. Later Ridley wanted to go back and explore elements concerning the origins of humanity, the God Complex and John Milton, Paradise Lost.

... The idea that someone somehow found Big Chap much less "revived" it is beyond ridiculous and I'm deeply disappointed that ANYONE would think this is in any way a good idea. It really does speak to how easy people are these days, just dangle something nostalgic in front of them like a carrot on a stick and watch them chase it like the brain-dead sheep they are; doesn't matter how stupid the idea or concept is, people want them sweet, sweet 'member-berries. The only way this concept can work in any meaningful way without being beyond stupid is if this was a purely "dumb luck" scenario... Like WY went out there trying to find the Nostromo and against all astronomical odds bumped into the corpse of Big Chap floating around, then it'd be an easier pill to swallow. But so help me if they're going with Ridley Scott's fan-fiction that xenomorphs can "regenerate" from even that sort of damage... That might be enough to kill any desire to see future "ALIEN" movies. It's bad enough the ever-accelerating gestation and growth cycles for the xenos as presented in the AvP films seems to be "canon" now, but aliens regenerating from incinerated or crushed bodies is just taking things too far.

I would have a serious problem with them changing the lore behind the life cycle to include immortality, or indestructibility. Think about it...we went from the theory that it's life is short and burns fast, so it MUST survive long enough to spread it's progeny extraordinarily violently, to it will completely regenerate no matter how dead, or how ever many pieces it appears to be in? To what purpose then should it struggle, and adapt so deftly to it's environment just to kill everyone and everything in a matter of hours if it cannot die anyway? Is it a bio-weapon, or a natural organism. Because a bio-weapon in the end would need to be controllable by those wielding it, and an organism had a biological niche to fill somewhere in it's evolutionary history. So it's either selected for use by someone, or is naturally selected to serve a purpose in it's biome. To make it immortal makes it a god. To make it a god it would need a supernatural purpose. That would attribute, IMO, and absurd feat to something that has never expressed a purpose beyond it's portrayed function. I think the writers need to focus on the unanswered questions: where did it come from, and how did it come to exist?

Finding the xenomorph from Alien floating in space - sorry but that's one hell of a stretch. Ripley's lifeboat is just about understandable given it likely had a detectable power signature, possibly a location beacon and is almost 20m in length - plus was likely navigating in the right direction to be found. But to just come across a 2.5m tall xenomorph floating randomly in space that had been blasted off in any old direction......come on!. A more believable scenario would be that the Nostromo's self destruct malfunctioned and the Nostromo itself was not actually destroyed, just the cargo/refinery section it was pulling. The blast throwing the Nostromo itself clear. Given we know that Dallas, Brett etc were cocooned and were being transformed - they could find the heavily damaged Nostromo floating dead in space, board it and recover these remains. I'd buy that more so than finding a lone xenomorph floating in space.

Hard no from me. This kind of closed loop in films, where the universe only ever seems to contain about 10 characters, is always a big letdown for me. The xenomorph are legion. Their threat is that any one is deadly. Focusing on bringing back 1 particular xeno undermines that Idea. And yes, the small detail that space is unimaginably vast, with objects constantly in motion. It would be ludicrous if WeYu scientists were to locate something that size - even if they went looking for it - given all the variables that need to be factored.

I've been kicking around a similar theory ever since it was postulated that Big Chap was found. Taking a nod from (don't cringe) Colonial Marines video game AND more importantly a line from Alien: " Mother, I've switched the cooling units back on". The Nostromo wasn't disintegrated, the explosionS were the refinery. The Nostromo did go critical, but at a lower "value" than an uninterrupted self destruct would. She only missed the cooling circuits by a few seconds. Instead of big chap, the entire aft section of the nostromo and/or the area where.... ....Dallas and Brett were cacooned, was found. "But they were burned". We're they? The ship blew apart only minutes after Ripley torched them. Then all the oxygen was gone and the deep freeze of space took over. Far more plausible, in my opinion, than Big Chap himself being found would be.

The director's cut isn't canon so no one was cocooned. Also if they were that close to find the wreckage of the Nostromo wouldn't they just hear the signal from the Space Jockey vessel and just go there to get as many eggs as they want? No one turned that baby off plus I assume any rescue vessel sent to look for them would have a much more powerful sensor package than an outdated space truck. This whole thing just feels like a ridiculous reach in my opinion. Just let the original xenomorph be dead. There's no believable way to make this happen.

Nitpicking: Dan O'Bannon had said that the Alien had a short lifespan that's what drives it to reproduce, and part of the reason the Big Chap didn't kill Ripley in the shuttle is it was dying. I never interpreted the ending of Alien with the Big Chap dying due to the blast. Nearly moments before that happened, Ripley barely managed to escape the alien's clutches so it is a combination of luck and Ripley's quick thibking that allowed her to survive her encounter with the monster. It's more of a "she got away" and not a "she overcame the beast in a fight for survival and killed it" feel.

Honestly, this is an idea that would make me fanboy a little if it turned out to be true, but that would quickly turn into disbelief when thinking about the sheer unlikelyhood of Big Chap surviving what Ripley did to it alone, not even counting the sheer ridiculousness of Weyland Yutani somehow coming across it's body in the vastness of space after all that time and have it still being alive. Frankly we'll just have to wait and see what happens, but i really want Romulus to be excellent because the franchise more than deserves another great film at this point and i don't want it to be tainted by a plothole like that if it's true!

Whilst I like the idea I also remember, I think maybe the 20th anniversary dvd, Ridley or someone on the commentary saying the reason the Alien is kind of subdued in the Narcissus just laying there is because its dying. Due to how quick it grows its like an insect with a very short lifespan. However your right in the Covenant commentary he says its indestructible. As for surviving in space, its possible if you remember what Ash says about the facehugger replacing cells with silicon to survive in harsh environments

Any scenario bringing back Big Chap is going just a bit too far. Same is true for the idea of the Xenomorph being indestructible. You can't win against something that can't be killed. Might as well put the pulse rifle down and give up in that case. I say all this to say that we've pretty much been screwed since Alien III. It was never the proper sequel to Aliens we should have had. The direction of the franchise has been skewed ever since. Prometheus gave us a little hope of answering questions about "The Before". Then things kinda skewed again with Covenant. Okay, now I can't even remember how I got here. End of rant.

Ridley Scott saying the Xenomorphs are indestructible is a bit of an odd twist that reeks of Cell/Buu from DBZ or something, but even if Big Chap was heavily degraded or almost even atomized, we could say that the recovery of parts of it could be considered a callback to William Gibson's unused script for Alien 3. In that storyline, it's revealed that the Xenomorphs can essentially infect hosts even from a simple particulate state, kind of like the spores in Alien: Covenant. They don't emerge like the Backburster from that movie, but essentially convert their hosts on a cellular level into a Xenomorph, that then tears off its human exterior. "Xenomorph as nanotech weapon" was a kind of extra layer of horror in that script. Why they don't use that propagation method by default was never really addressed, but it also really doesn't have to be to make an effective horror movie; mystery is part of the equation of good horror. It's also very hard to completely atomize something; you can imagine the Narcissus's thrusters would do a lot of damage (like SpaceX's Starship did to that launch pad) but not necessarily enough to destroy Big Chap down to a subatomic level. And what those Weyland-Yutani techs are carrying under that tarp doesn't look big enough to be the full corpse of Big Chap...

Everything about it in the film was unique, the way it behaved, the way it thought, the way it moved. That's why it's the real star of the film. That is part of the problem I have with Cameron reducing them to mere bug like creatures, just to be squashed and shot at every turn. Alien 3 brought it back around to it's origins. But, I think it's a stretch to believe that they found him floating in space. It's bad enough that the comedy Alien Resurrection brought Ripley back.

QUIT CALLING THE GODDAMN THING, "BIG CHAP". That was the nickname the crew gave the ACTOR in the suit. NOT the alien. Jesus Christ...

I'm not that jazzed on seeing Big Chap again but as long as it's a great explanation that doesn't insult my intelligence, I'm game to see how they pull it off.

Ridley Scott is is no position to create the alien lore. He didn’t write the original film and only came back to the franchise 35 years later because he regrets not directing the sequel. That’s why the last 2 films were crap. I respect him directing the First because it’s such a big part of my childhood but he should’ve never been able to make that s#!t up as he went along…

Everyone keeps talking about how unlikely and unrealistic it would be for them to come upon big chap in space. But honestly, if the line that Ripley shot into him is somehow still connected. Then them discovering Ripley’s escape craft would lead to them finding the alien. I could absolutely see a scene in which Weyland/U comes upon the vessel, with every intention of saving Ripley, and then sees what’s tethered to it, and decides to take that home instead. Leaving Ripley to float through space for another 30-some years. Probably considering her a headache they don’t wanna deal with.

The sequel was Aliens so what more do you want? I have a feeling that no matter what they make in this franchise and no matter how good it is, people like you will never be happy. This movie is rated R, it's an actual movie and not a show, and it's made by a director with a good track record for horror. Ideas nev3r sound as good on paper so why don't you wait until it's rel3ased before demonizing it?

I just about did a spit take learning that Ridley Scott commented that a mangled xenomorph would "DNA back to parts and regrow because it's indestructible" (I challenge anyone to diagram this sentence, lol) I admire the guy's accomplishments and can even respect that he was trying something different with the very divisive prequels, but omg, this statement is indisputable evidence that the cheese has slipped off his biscuit. 🤣

Why? Open your mind up to the idea, I mean the original intent of the alien is that it is an unstoppable force of nature. You can't escape it, let alone kill it. That is the horror of alien.

@@asterix1912 The difference between a perfect organism and lazy writing is that a perfect organism is consistent. The biggest strength of the original trilogy is that each movie added a new feature to the alien in a way that made sense why it didn't appear in the earlier movies. It also didn't require many hoops to fit it all together into a single creature. Considering the alien has had many chances to regenerate until now but never did, it becomes harder to add it while making it consistent with all other depictions.
