H.R. Giger designed the alien and facehugger. If you see some of Giger's art, you would understand that all of his artworks have a mechanical/grotesque/horror/sexual theme to them. His design for the alien and facehugger are in keeping with his style. So, knowing this, I am not surprised of the designs of the alien and facehugger. Yes, both the alien and facehugger are supposed to replicate genitals. The dome of the Alien head represents the male, while the inside of the facehugger represents the female, stuff like this, is really Giger's style of art. I am a HUGE fan of the Alien franchise, especially Alien and Aliens, and I do find Giger's artwork fascinating, interesting and really pretty amazing. The horror mixed with sexual mixed with mechanical really piques my interest. It is different, and I really feel that Giger made something classic with the designs for the facehugger and Alien. It wouldn't be the same without these designs.

Great review! The 4k looks amazing! I know you said the some CGI shots don’t look great but to clarify there is no CGI in Aliens. Most of the special effect shots are rear projection, map paintings, and miniatures.

Aliens is the best 4K disc that I've screened in my Home Theater (133-inch screen, stadium seating with 7.2.4 Dolby Atmos, Full EXIT lighting with side curtains, flat midnight black walls and a Star Field Ceiling)

log off from yt open your latest content on yt pause the video select the gear icon to open settings select quality see whats the maximum resolution you are getting. All the above-mentioned steps assume you are doing it on your 4k TV, not your smartphone.

@@Sas-wk9lj- I figured out the issue. It was definitely on me while I’m recording. I record on OBS for Mac. I didn’t have the settings right. But I do now thanks to you mentioning it. Moving forward - I’ll be in all in true 4k baby 😉👍🏼

Agreed! At least It retains the grain which is important because grain IS DETAIL Scrub away the grain and you scrub away the detail, and then using A.I. to fill in the gaps and over-sharpening the image is like taking your favorite painting and using AI to remove all the brushstrokes. Why? Just so Cameron can say it looks clear now. Doesn’t mean it’s better.

@eljay5009 gotcha - wasn’t aware of that originally. It’s crazy although perhaps not surprising given how one can affect their own pictures they take on their phone with effects. But seeing the bluray to the new 4k…it’s night and day. Whether one thinks that is better or worse is the debate but man oh man are they vastly different.

The contrast between bluray and 4k looks phenomenal in Aliens. Howeve, I'd take that with grain of salt as 1) I need to re-watch my bluray copy to see if actually looks as bad (dull) as it's shown in your side by side comparison 2) 4k is brighter, contrasty but seem to loose the continuous soft natural tonality of the skin. the stubbled face looks like skin is rough and patchy. Another thing I'm gonna try is to watch my Aliens bluray with dynamic picture mode on or may be some finer tuning with contrast, dynamic contrast, black level, luminosity etc. 3) I have dvds that have better contrast than Aliens. So, I'm more inclined to think they did not pay attention releasing the bluray and perhaps thought they can squeeze more money from us by releasing another disc in 4k that'd correct the issues with bluray. It's more of a redemption with 4k for the movies that went without quality check while releasing bluray version.

That’s exactly what you should do 👍🏼😉 Make your own informed choice through your own eyes. There are SO MANY different pieces of equipment people use to do these analyses and mine is specific to my set up. I can tell you that I didn’t alter in anyway. These are taken directly from my own set up with zero alterations. But, as I always state in my vids, I’m using a Sony 4k native laser projector with a LLDV (low latency Dolby Vision) switch with a Panasonic UB820 player. Results are going to vary based on how you watch on your own equipment and what features or enhancements (up scaling) you may do to a blu ray. But thank you again for your thoughts and comment…

This may sound bit ironical, but I'd suggest you to improve your content's PQ, may be upgrade to 4k, lol. Your presentation is great, just to top it up with good, decent picture of higher resolution and ambience will make your content more liked and visible.

Believe it or not I am filming in 4k - I just think it’s the lighting (or lack thereof) in my basement. I can try to mess around with ideas to see what happens, but yeah - I’m working off a ring light. I can turn on the theater lights and see what that may do. Appreciate the feedback - I definitely want to do all I can to make my content look good.

It looks very modern, very "digital" but there IS grain, and I love this new transfer despite all the hatred I read on the web. Dolby Vision makes the job (fake HDR ?? Come on...). I understand that the so called "purists" may not love this new transfer, but are they able to do the same job as professionals ?

I think the fear may be that more studios or labels employ this same tactic. That may be more than anything what’s got a “film lover” up in arms. I can respect that, but I want my film to look the absolute best possible and to my eyes, this looks damn good. Whether it looks “digital” or not - I just want the best clarity, depth, contrast, etc…and this seems to tick all the boxes and more. Kinda hard to deny whether someone likes it or not…

Thank you so much Ken for the screen shot comparison!!! "Aliens" is one of my all-time favorite movies. I am still waiting on my copy from Amazon (it's on backorder). Those screen shots you took look awesome!!! And don't worry about those "controversial" screen shots (I'm gay, so I was not phased by it at all.....LOL). Thru other KZfaq reviewers I have watched, I am seeing that "Aliens" and "The Abyss" (which I also ordered and is on backorder with Amazon) are more positive reviews than the other Cameron movie ("True Lies"). You are like the third reviewer that also mention how amazing the audio quality is on the 4K for "Aliens". I also heard with the backordered items, Disney is not putting stickers on the slip covers (and hoping that is true, cause like I discussed with you on another one of your videos, I hate those stickers on the slipcovers too!!!). And I have to say, kudos to you on your video.....those screen shots really made a difference compared to the other reviewers I was watching. Now I know what I am getting into, and now I am REALLY looking forward to watching this upgrade to my favorite movie!! Thank you again Ken.....much appreciated!!!

I can sympathy with the clarity on the 4K, the HDR, etc., but it looks more like video than film. I suggest you take a look at the Alien 4k disc restoration and compare it to the Aliens 4k disc so that you see how film should properly look on disc. The Aliens disc is sharp, but it looks like it was shot with a 1080p camcorder.

That may also be coz' of this channel's contentPQ and resolution. If you have a poor quality camera, you can't replicate exactly what the content maker actually saw on his TV. Having said that, I agree with you that celluloid filmic quality is missing in most of the 4k releases, due to HDR on in our 4k Bluray player, the artificial luminosity is present always in the film through and through. I've experimented with HDR off for some of my 4k releases, and picture looked more film like than videos taken with our mobile or camcorder. It's the same analogy when you see a movie with dynamic mode setting vs film-maker mode. That's the issue here it seems. For the same reason TV settings for AI enhanced PQ like 'Reality Creation' or Clarity/ Sharpness never worked for me. I leave them to minimum or default.

Thank you for the really interesting and helpful video. I won’t come back to my blu rays. To me, 4k is overall way better. And in many controversial cases 4k releases just go for the lesser of two evils. AI processing is not a new thing and too many grains are ugly when it’s 4k (yes I’m looking at some 4k discs on my shelf). I don’t think too many details have been lost because of the modern technology. Another thing I don’t understand is why a 4k release has a lot to do with film preservation. They can always preserve the original film or redo a negative. All I want is a good product with better visuals and audios, and these 4k releases do it well. I see no contradiction.

Glad you enjoyed it - I do know that film deteriorates over time so moving it to a disc or digital format is important as all film one day will cease to exist as it all will break down one day. Technically so will a disc but it will last FAR longer if kept in the right conditions. Appreciate you being here! Thanks for the comment…

I can relate to this comment as I'm from the old time of analog cinema, what you call celluloid film based movies. Truly mesmerizing in theatres, absolutely. I fondly reacall of Benher, Enter the Dragon, Conan the Barbarian, Thunderball, Jaws to name just a few.

I have mixed feelings about the transfer. While I hate any use of DNR, that’s clearly not what JC did. I love film grain but you can’t deny the clarity of these 4Ks. I think all the recent James Cameron 4Ks are all excellent over all.

Great point - I’m still learning a lot about 4k transfer technology so I’m not in the place to comment on “how it’s done” and “what methods should or shouldn’t be used,” but I can tell what looks great and what doesn’t. And damn…this looks great! I hear the Abyss is the best so I’m excited to check it out and get that review up soon.

Great review and screenshots, kudos on going to the Netherlands 😅! It's good isn't it, pretty night & day, so don't know what all the kerfuffle is about, and certainly will be better than my DVD 😃. Hopefully some better packaging on the way, or maybe a box set... PS. Prometheus is excellent!

Great video buddy! While I still prefer the blu ray. I don’t think the 4K is the biggest failure it’s being made out to be. It just doesn’t fit what I wanted from the 4K but I can’t deny the detail and clarity. The look itself is just not for me. The extras in one nice place is really cool though!

Just a FYI , there was not one CGi shot in the film . It was called Optical In Camera Effects & Matte Paintings. Did you purposely adjust your TV for the BluRay looks worse, because that is not what it looks like. Hmmm , makes us think.

Thank you for the clarification on the CGI - someone else mentioned that about the “reverse camera lens effect” or optical camera effect as you call it. I can promise you I made zero adjustments to anything on my end. 100% was what my equipment was putting out. And no - zero affiliation to Disney / Fox. I actually can’t stand Disney. Just sharing what my experience was….

100% transparency- I have not yet watched the re-issued bluray to compare it to the 2010 original. If I get to it, I’ll most certainly respond back. I believe it’s going to look similar to what you saw here with the 4k in terms of lighting, contrast, and color grading.

If you want real 4k demo worthy disc, the best of the best 4Ks ever, try 'The Wolverine' (2013, Hugh Jackman). I challenge if any other 4k can ever come close to its stellar PQ. You'll know what real 4K can be. The color, contrast and depth is phenomenal. Seeing is believing. This is the only 4K release where I have to admit lightyears superior to its bluray counterpart (Which in itself isn't bad either). When something is really good based on its intrinsic value, you don't need to prove it's good, not to anyone, not to your own self.

I'm a bit torn with some of those shot comparisons. The space station particularly looked terrible in my opinion. I personally don't like too much contrast because it feels more like a TV show so I'm not sure this release is for me. Probably pick it up when it's been reduced.

Yeah that space station was a “gimmicky” looking shot. It’s one example of how “4k doesn’t translate older special effects well” I don’t know if it was a model or how they did that affect, but in the film it looks fake as hell. And more noticeable than the bluray. That said - it’s on a very small part of the film. There are a few other “old CGI” things with their spacecraft in which the 4k really exposes it and makes it look cheesy. But it’s really less than 5% of the film. The rest looks pretty amazing… That said - just like I know you will do my friend…do you. 😉 Hope all is well over there across the pond!

@@MuckMan_Movies- Ah…well that had to be a rear screen composite shot. Looked good on the silver screen in 1986 I’m sure but certainly stood out noticeably on 4k as looking “fake.” Thanks for the clarification my friend.

@@ungraduatedmedia Some of that shot was a matte painting with model work mixed in. That's why it looks kinda fake on 4K because the 2160p resolution is exposing the outlines of the shot. Hellbound Hellraiser 2 4K has the same issues as Aliens as well because it used a lot of Matte paintings in the Hell sequences.

@@austinwillcut4919 yeah it’s just they really couldn’t have foreseen the technology today being what it is. They did what they could from an art and creative standpoint which is don’t fault them for, but it really stands out today in 4k.

Maybe not for the film itself with the “darkness” of the film and context material. But I still want to be able to “see” as much detail as possible.

There is a little bit of it - I just think it’s a bit tougher to tell on my projector screen versus a OLED TV or something similar. I’m not saying it’s perfect, but for me on my set up and with my eyes, pretty good

@@ungraduatedmedia On an OLED you can see every damn little hole on their faces lol. Maybe these 4K TVs are a little TOO good.

I agree, Prometheus was incredible. I wish Scott made Covenant differently so that it tied in Prometheus and Alien. As for Aliens 4K, I love how it looks. Its truly stunning.

Spot on - the storyline within Prometheus is just so wild (and carries such merit IMO). Wish Covenant would have tied along in with it.
