The first time I saw this I was utterly shocked to see the colony before it was destroyed. It adds depth and provides the audience with a look at what was there before the end came.

Ripley was in stasis for 57 years. During that time, her daughter died. They tell this to her in a deleted scene. It was an explanation for why Ripley is so attached to Newt.

I think this was a real easy scene to lose because it basically spoils the whole beginning of the movie. I think it's a lot more interesting for the audience to find out happened to the colony at the same time that Ripley and the marines do. The only deleted scene I wish they had kept (besides the sentry gun scene) is the one where Riply finds out what happened to her daughter. Without that scene, Riply's later attachment to Newt seems to come out of nowhere. It's also explains why Riply is so distraught when she thinks she's lost Newt later on.

that's IF this was the original movie, but it's the sequel, so viewers are already familiar with the facehugger and the alien life cycle. This is more of an action movie than a horror suspense one like the original. I suppose they could've just not shown Newt's father with the facehugger and have Newt scream...or move this scene to later in the movie where Newt is recounting what happened to the colony.

I loved this scene. The first time I saw Aliens it was the directors cut with this scene so I didn't even know it was deleted. It probably is an expendable scene. However I love that you get to put some faces with the colonists who died so gruesomely. Especially seeing those little kids. They all were cocooned in front of their families. Really made it scarier to me as a little kid.

This sequence had never been added to the movie. It is extremely silly and degrades the quality of the film. Let me give an example; Think that you are on a family trip and you discover an alien spaceship. You leave the kids at the car and get into the ship to look around but without even calling the authorities and letting them know about this extraordinary situation -probably the most important discovery of mankind. Then you mess with egg like organisms and all that shit. That is pure bullshit! And in addition; the entrance of the ship is shown somehow destroyed and silly looking broken pipes are shown. The derelict alien spaceship was in perfect condition in the Alien movie despite its age (we know that from the space-jockey fossil) and this was probably due to the bio-mechanical technology that enables the ship to recover it self including keeping the cargo (eggs) alive. How come James Cameron (the great) can make such a huge silly mistake is a total mystery.

@G E T R E K T I am a fan of movies that actually engages my mind and make me think and do not go for the cheap and obvious. It appears you needed to be preached to and being told what to think instead of thinking for yourself....which is pretty much all the crap that is being churn out today. Film makers nowadays instead of making a coherent self contained film, just explain it all away in internet extra features.

@@PungiFungi what suspense, exactly? The title of the movie is 'Aliens', presumably everyone bought a ticket to see xenomorphs.
@PungiFungi3 жыл бұрын
@@39401JLB That is like asking people who bought movie tickets to see the movie "Psycho" and ask them what suspense what they expecting. The fact that you even ask that question proved my point. Whatever suspense that was there in the film's first half was totally drained away by the restored colony scenes. This movie was made before the advent of social media and it coined word "xenomorph" and long before the xenomporphs themselves had become over exposed and over parodied. We who saw this premiered in the theaters had no idea of what to expect other than there will be more than one xenomorph. Will this go the horror route, or the action route? We had no expectations. I t is such sad state of affairs that so many movie goers today will never experience the film as it was original presented, buying into the extended version is better. Because everything needed to be explained to the audience, movie making with less is more had become a lost art, and audiences are no longer sophisticated as they were.
@39401JLB3 жыл бұрын
@@PungiFungi Nope, sorry. I went to see it because I had already seen 'Alien' & it was a continuation of that franchise. I knew the Colonial Marines were not being called out because of a sudden outbreak of kittens; and that they wouldn't be going to some random and unrelated planet with no 'Aliens' -- because that is not what it said on the tin. Walking into the theater, I knew folks were going to be killed by xenomorphs. When Ripley was being recruited to do a ride-along with the Marines to a random colony, I instantly knew folks had already been killed by xenomorphs -- there was no mystery at all.

In the novelization, they went into greater detail how the colony got overrun. They sent more people into the derelict, and next thing you know, facehuggers were flying through the air. It's a shame their budget was so low that they didn't have enough to film that. Supposedly they only had ten Warrior costumes and four Facehuggers, only two of which were the ones that could scuttle.

One thing why movies like Aliens still are regarded in high esteem is because less you see, more you imagine. And it´s that imagination that makes great horror movie great. If you remember in the first film there was some sort of strange light/mist above the eggs. They basically kept the eggs from hatching if anything got too close. Let alone hatch by themselves and wander around the ship. When Ash entered the ship he fell through and under the stasis field which is how the egg detected him and opened. It was a safety precaution by the space jockeys.

I like the fact that the idea for the fracture in the engineer's ship came from the fact that the actual original model from Alien took some wear and tear in the years before the sequel. So rather than replace a one-of-a-kind model, they used its condition to their advantage plot wise, explaining that the terraforming done by Weyland-Yutani caused tremors that caused the fracture, and also terminated the distress signal. Pure genius improve.

I saw Aliens in the theater and of course, we knew there will be ALIENS running about, but I remember the dread and suspense when Ferro spotted the colony's beacon lights, and us, like Ripley, suspected and knew what had happened, but we are on the ride with her, not waiting for her to discover what WE saw already. If things went different, Hadley's Hope would have become a larger colony thanks to the discovery of the derelict and the consequent enstablishment of a much more robust W&Y presence on the moon. Probably also the Colonial Marines would have increased their presence on the colony turning it into a major hub in the sector. Economically speaking, this would have affected also the nearby colony/station of Sevastopol (in the nearby system) as major node of travel between Earth and Thedus. I dont have enough info about Thedus, but from those few scraps I was able to collect, Thedus remained a big colony even after the full exploitation of the raw resources on the planet, so, a major colony in the American Arm. Right next to the Frontier. The close proximity of Alpha Caeli would also have benefit Acheron with more trade, even if it is probable that Thedus would have been selected as a site where to put dockyards and shipyards for the UAAC to supply and refit the aging ORDF. But the whole zone would have become a rich sector for the UAAC, while more internal federations like the 3WE and probably part of the UPP and even the same United Americas, soon or later, would have joined a more unified form of government. But I still think that the UAAC would have resisted to that way, pushing for their independence at all costs. Its just to see if they have even considered to relocate the whole "American" nation in colonies outside the core or not. In case of "not", war would have been a natural conclusion for the UAAC. In case of "yes" instead, it would have been curious to see how far these new "americans" would have gone just to remain "independent" from an "unified Earth" nation resulting from the fusion of the 3WE, UPP and ICIS. A thing that appears only in Alien 4 with the "United Systems"... Still, Hadley's Hope would have been a great place where to set more action.

I'm glad they cut this scene, too. It goes on way too long and gives away way too much, too early in the movie. The deleted scene I miss the most is near the beginning of the movie, when Burke tells Ripley about her daughter. It gives us important information about Ripley and her motivations, because her later attachment to Newt seems to come out of nowhere.

There's so many great things about this scene, such as seeing the life in the colony. But it definitely works best for us to return to LV423 with Ripley.

I wish these colony scenes had been included in all the versions of Aliens. The suspense experienced after Ripley and the marines landed would not have been ruined. Sure, the audience would suspect that disaster occurred after the colonists encountered the face huggers, but not necessarily the full extent of the tragedy. The horrible reality-that Newt was the only remaining uninfected survivor-would not be clear at first.
@ANonymous-mo6xp10 ай бұрын
What I find interesting is that the original viewing public had the suspense of the theatrical cut. Then later we can watch the extended cut already having experienced the movie and see a different interpretation of it. And that's no problem at all.
@PungiFungi5 ай бұрын
Showing too much too soon lessen the impact of the reveal of the colony afterwards. I remember the audience gasping when they saw the facehuggers in the lab in the theater. I highly doubt they would do that if they had already seen the facehuggers ahead of time when Newt's father fell victim to it. To its credit, the colony scene do have an eerie shot of the derelict.
@captainviggo45752 жыл бұрын
Always loved this scene as a fan, but it's also why I always show/suggest people who have never seen the movie to watch the theatrical cut first. It's a lot better to discover the colony and most importantly Newt at the same time Ripley does, without knowing exactly how they were before the infestation. Also, the movie is almost always told from Ripley's perspective (or when she's not far), these scenes do not.
@sandal_thong8631 Жыл бұрын
I think that's one of the things about story-telling and that's to know from whose perspective it's being told. In this case it's Ripley's. Being sent out to the grid coordinates and what happens later could have been a special show or something from Newt's perspective, like a recollection on Earth when she's older.

You son of a gun thank you so much for putting this up, I've been looking for this for a long time and couldn't find it anywhere you win the internet for this. I love this film (Aliens is the only one I haven't seen yet) I hope the prequel will be just as good as the originals.
@muddywaters28182 ай бұрын
We need just a prequel Alien film of what happened to all the colonists. Just rewatching Aliens we see the whole facility look like a war zone. Blood and bloody handprints throughout the facility. Them being crazy enough to capture a few face huggers and trying to observe them. It would be an insane horror movie.

This is the only scene in the special edition that deserved to be cut. It's kind of cool to see the colony and it explains what happened, and also see the derelict ship from Alien 1 and a facehugger again...but it removed a lot of tension from the subsequent scenes because we know what happened. Otherwise the special edition is way better than the theatrical edition.

Why they Deleted this escene. I have see all the deleted scenes in Aliens, and everyone of them is excelent. I don't care if the movie last 3 hours, as long if its good.
@cubdukat10 жыл бұрын
The complete version of the movie ran over two and a half hours, and Fox was nervous that they would be losing money. James Cameron ended up taking 17 minutes out to satisfy Fox. Although most of the footage got added back in when "Aliens" made its broadcast television debut on CBS in 1989, this scene wasn't completed at the time. Cameron had the visual effects completed, and it was added back for the 1991 Special Edition Laserdisc.

There is a time threshold that relates to how long audiences can reasonably be expected to sit in a theater for. Once you get over 2 1/2 hours it starts to get sketchy. So they had to make some serious decisions. I like that scene though. Puts a face to the colonists rather than just a number. We went to a theater a number of years ago and they were playing the super long version of Das Boot. 293 minutes. just about 5 hours. Killed our asses lol. But worth it. They had a couple of breaks though.

I quite like getting a 'before and after' of Hadley's Hope in this cut. In the theatrical, you don't really get a sense that this desolate base was once a flourishing colony before the aliens showed up ....

Aliens is one of the greatest sequels of all time. if you ask me, as much as i think the first one is great and scary, the sequel was awesome and full of action and terror. they should of just made the first one, the sequel and a prequel and ended the alien films.
@WilliamTheUnkownShoutout5 ай бұрын
@brown0922 I am with you Alien (1979) directed by Ridley Scott is the greatest sci-fi horror movie and Aliens (1986) directed by James Cameron is the greatest sci-fi action and horror movie and The Thing (1982) directed by John Carpenter is the ultimate sci-fi horror movie it doesn't need a sequel or a prequel it is to cool and awesome for either of those as well:).

It's easy to see why this scene was deleted. Apart from the obvious spoiler and pacing problems, it would have been kinda strange that the ship wasn't discovered a long time ago, right when the first colonists came.
@t.n.38194 жыл бұрын
It's so cool to see this years later, but I also can see why it ended up on the cutting-room floor. The tone feels off to me, plus it spoils the mystery.
@butterknife10664 жыл бұрын
It's a good scene, but I agree that the utter destruction of Hadley's Hope should have been left a surprise, so I think it should have fit in as a flashback from Newt when she was sleeping or something
@MKIVWWI10 жыл бұрын
An interesting set-up, to be sure, but I can see why it ended up on the cutting room floor. A "mom and pop surveying team" which acts like a family going on a picnic? Where's Wally and the Beaver? Sorry, but a bit too "cutesy" and pedestrian, including the family's dialog. Besides, it was more effective to have Ripley and the Colonial Marines show up without showing the colony first... added to the mystery and suspense.

Would have been an interesting concept for a standalone movie to show the impact of that "discovery" on Hadleys Hope (representing a human society/ civilization), in Aliens you could see multiple facehuggers in the lab station, so it cannot have only been the one on Newts father which caused all of the shit, but they went and investigated and bit by bit the colony falls into chaos and death. Always wanted a "real" Alien movie taking place on earth, this would be close :)
@sigmaprojects7 жыл бұрын
Yea, just not AVP stuff. That's "aliens" on Earth. But yea I agree would be great to see a new genre with how you described.
@OAlemaozinho7 жыл бұрын
lol right, i wanted to bring AvP up but i didnt wanna hate. Let me put it like this: after seeing the first three Alien flicks as a kid and reading two books, i had my own idea how, eventually cuz logic, humans would have to fight off the xenomorphs on earth. The AvPs did not at bloody all use ANY of the potential this kind of fight had.
@sigmaprojects7 жыл бұрын
Freedom Mbutu Yea, the AVP is really a squandered IP, lots of potential, but never really thought through other than a simple action flick. Your idea probably would work best as a new franchise. Similar to how the Starship Troopers TV series was with the eventual invasion of Earth (losing it at that). Would be nice to see a new one.
@geonerd7 жыл бұрын
Yea. The adventures of the H.H. personnel who somehow rescued several parasitized people, presumably from the heart of the bug nest (or did the bugs relocate to the A.P. basement at some point?) would make a worthy installment in the series.

Indeed, a prequel of Aliens to say, like in the movie, "The Thing" in the 2011 prequel of the original, how the story goes the Norwegian Scientists first encountered the deadly form shifting alien, leading to that dog chase that was shown in the beginning of the 1982 movie, continuing on from there. Would like to see who was the ill-fated 'Ripley' in a prequel of Aliens.

Alien 3 had something that even modern day films lack.... It had balls. They were going for a morbid story filled with sadness and responsiblity. Not all heros ride off in the sunset and honestly that theme that has gotten old in Hollywood. This story was a suicide mission and as such this was a personal journey between Ripley and her demons. In order to do that they had to strip away everything Ripley holds dear. No Newt, No Hicks, No Romance, No Friends... Just her..

If you have siblings, you have to feel for Newt's RL brother, who plays her brother in the movie. Imagine both getting casted for a movie, but the scene you're in gets scrapped and completely forgotten, while your sister goes on to become a cult icon for a whole generation. I hope for her brother's sake Newt's ego was more tempered than my siblings.
