Alistair's story as king borrows pretty heavily from the early life of the legendary King Arthur too. Which is interesting since Arthur's name was Alistair before he changed it during his crowning as tribute to his father Uther.

Hell YEAH! Alistair is honestly a character who I think no matter how far ahead we get in the series will always be on our minds, much like Morrigan. We've seen him go from an unsure 20-year-old, to now a confident man who is sure of who he is, and what he stands for. As the players of these games have aged and changed, Alistair has too in a way other characters have not. Hell Yeah great video on the best boi.

Alistair doesn't actually use lyrium for his Templar abilities. He comments on it in Origins when he teaches the Warden to be a Templar how he thinks that it's actually just a means of controlling the Templars as well as making their abilities stronger, but not actually using it as a requirement. It probably would have come up if he was a wandering drunk as well since he would have had lyrium withdrawal by that point if it was required for his abilities.

Maybe instead of Alistair having special blood, a Warden giving birth somehow passes their blight onto the infant, but in a way that doesn’t kill the baby similar to Kieran. This could be another reason Duncan was so interested in making Alistair a warden

All I can think to say is, "WOW!!!" What a wonderful compilation of lore on Alistair! As DA: Origins is my first love of the game series I'm very attached to all the companions of it. The only companion we all know how her story ended was Wynne and that just broke my heart. I never sacrificed Alistair as that would have been just too heartwrenching. Jeez, the whole Dragon Age series is just like a Choose your Ending novel/movie with very well developed three-dimensional characters. Thank you SO much for compiling all the information! I read the Stolen Throne and The Calling shortly after Origins was released and I really loved Maric and was so sad to see how Alistair was very wrong about the type of man he was. Alistair was my Warden's best friend and my favorite companion and I was always trying to help him reach his full potential. I have a soft spot for both Maric and Alistair. So when the comics staring Alistair was announced I was so excited. After reading the second issue and finding out his quest was to find Maric I was ecstatic. When Alistair finally meets Maric in the fade and they have a special father/son moment and Alistair convinces Maric to come back with him to the material plane I was so happy....until reality set in. It broke my heart to say the least.

Ghil, I love your videos. You make everything so interesting and engaging. You also help me (and lots of the others in the community) know about the lore in a more comprehensive manner than the Dragon age Devs make it. So when I say this, I think I speak for the community, Thank You.

Bravo, not sure how you condensed all that into under 25 min haha. Great vid as usual. This is kind of one of my problems with world states though.... Sure they make the singular game they're in more interesting, but wow as the story goes on and on the work to upkeep all of these threads quickly becomes unmanageable. At this point we're likely sacrificing more content over tieing up loose ends that only various fractions of the playerbase will end up seeing.

Alistair is my absolute favourite character. I love him so much and I wish I could let my boi become King but I can't let him go cuz I luv having him in Inquisition also Loghain nor Stroud are worth more than Hawke to me and I really love sacrificing Hawke, ah well... I wonder if Alistair preferred the Wardens or being King... I think he suits the Uniform anyway... My boi ❤

Thank you so much for this!! I loved all of the lore. Like so many others, Alistair is my BAE, and I adore his character!! There were some things (albeit not many) I had been unclear on (mostly the comic stuff) and this was so much fun to watch! Andrastini is an absolute wizard (er, Mage Magnifique) with her vids and mods!

Despite the Codex-Entry that says that Alistair was re-admitted into the Wardens after being a drunk, I don’t think that drunk-Alistair can become Hawke’s Warden contact. At least according to the Keep, Alistair cannot be a drunk _and_ die in the Fade in the same worldstate.

8:26 So here's my problem with how hardening has been described in this video and with the hardening system in general. The dialogue options ARE NOT "bro, stick up for yourself for once" or "bruv, just keep being a doormat. Let people do what they want with you." No, the options were to be kind and encouraging to him after his being crushed by a harsh reality, be neutral, or say "everyone's out for themselves," essentially lecturing a guy who already feels like shit. That doesnt tell him to stick up for himself. Or that he has to go out and take what he wants. Or to make the best out of worst situations. It's just, "yeah, people suck. Get used to it." If I had had the option in my first, blind playthrough to say something like "You dont need her, and dont let her prey on your kindness," Alistair would've been hardened from the get go. But no. I had to wait until my mercenary, rogue City elf to harden him in a Narratively consistent way.

I actually completely forgot Alistair is a Half-Elf. Alistair is and will always be, one of my favourite Dragon Age characters, tied with Morrigan and Iron Bull.

Thank you for amazing history of beloved Alistair. Though , Alistair is able to use Templar abilities without being drugged as normal Templars. Alistair had never gotten to that stage since Duncan had recruited Alistair before this point as told by Alistair himself in DA:O. It was used by Chantry to have power of control over Templars from making them addicted to it and led to horrible dementia after nonstop use as we had learned from Cullen in DA:I. Cullen had powerful and emotional storyline over this issue and he had watched other Templars lose themselves afterwards. Cullen had chosen to go cold turkey off it during DA:I. You as player could side with his decision with good consequence ending or choose to have him start taking it again with bad consequence ending with him breaking up your romance with him as well. Though , you can help him get off it again afterwards you beat the game as one of the option choices that gets good ending and still allowed your character to be romance by him too. I had learned this option when I had played two handed Templar warrior who had romance Cullen and he did not breakup with her.

Is it weird that I'd rather see orgren, shale or ferris in the next game? Idk I wanna see the less likely and what they're doing. Cause I know alistair is safely leading ferelden but I have no clue what happened to characters like shale, My dwarven nerd and a large number of the esemble cast. (It's nice to see sten is nice and safe, zeveren is okayish if you don't kill him issabella is okay don't know what happened to wynne I hope she passed surrounded by her friends and family. what what about the warren's dwarven son? he should be a companion and get annoyed he has a human brother eh heh heh heh but yeah joking aide alot of the cast have kids, siblings and so on that would be interesting to see again.)

I think my Silmaril muse Elennárë (aka Elenaria Surana) has fond memories of Alistair. Depends on which timeline though, because some timelines where the Warden at Ostagar was one of her sisters, the relationship doesn't happen because Alistair had a brief crush on that sister (though in both cases they would not reciprocate, because Lossanárë (Elissa Cousland) was already married and Elenlossë (Lyna Mahariel), while not married, had already had her heart set on Maglor (remember, Silmarils - I am talking Tolkien characters here). On the other hand, depending on timeline, either one or both of those two would later end up becoming Alistair's daughters (with Anora). Any timeline with Elissa Cousland would mean only one princess, Alana, but non-Andraste timelines would also have Alissa, who would eventually become Ternya of Gwaren. P.S. I am very tempted to start up a Dalish Warden game to play Lyna Mahariel. I have a Cousland savegame already, but not having even reached Lothering yet.

I just had a very sudeen and slightly earthshattering realisation, so allow me to indulge in a bit of tinfoil-time: Alistair could very much be half of the cure for the taint, thanks to the great dragon blood in Theirin bloodline. The other half - magic. Alow me to explain, first of all, we know that dragons are naturally resistant to blight, they can hold the taint back in their bodies and keep it from spreading. If a high dragons can do that, it doesn't seem too much of a stretch to presume great dragons resistance can be even greater. We know Fiona had been cured of the taint some time around when she gave birth to him, but if it was just Alistair's blood and nothing else, how could he be tainted to become a Warden? That's why it seems another ingredient, so to speak, is needed for a cure. It would be a great leap to assume this on a single case, but there is another one: Kieran. He was born without the taint despite being tainted when he was conceived (otherwise the ritual wouldn't have worked), and we know he is not tainted because Morigan told us "he's a normal boy". It would also support a notion that a significant amount of Theirin blood is needed, which is why Fiona was cured around the time of Alistair's birth and why Kieran was tainted when conceived but no longer when he was born. As far as we know these two incidents have very little in common apart from two things, the father was of Theirin blood and the mother was a mage. I am avare two instances are still a very narrow pool to base a theory on (though honestly there are theories flying around based on less XD), but I can't actually recall anything from the top of my head that would outright disprove this. Which is what brings me to ask here, are any of you avare of actual facts shown to us that make this an utter nonsense? I need help, someone please confirm if I am or am not insane thinking this is plausible XD

I hacked my way to romancing him with my male mage character. Then I had him marry Anora after he broke up with me because of the whole mage thing. Then I booted him from my party and died killing the big bad at the end for the drama.

So Varric was in the fade before but he makes no comment about that in DOI, least none I've heard when having him as a companion when we go into the fade.

I once heard a theory that there's a third Theirin out there who *IS* Goldanna's sibling that was sent elsewhere instead of dying and Alistair taking their place. It'd be interesting if true and help cover any deaths or asspull excuses for a cameo after Inquisition but I doubt it'll be the case.

Another part of Dragon Age that is inspired by A Song of Ice and Fire. My one huge gripe with Alistair: His unwillingness to lead and forcing the player to lead even though he's the senior warden and then NOT telling anything about Grey Warden unless something happened or the player asked him. AND BEING UNABLE TO TELL HIM THAT WE KNOW NOTHING ABOUT GREY WARDEN COMPARED TO HIM. I don't mind Alistair, but his indecisiveness made me so angry sometimes.

First, that he caught me off guard; I didn't notice him right away as an important character. Secondly, I first thought he was unintelligent, but found that most of that was an act. I didn't always get his humour, but sometimes the wit would make me laugh out loud. I was swept up in the romance part of the story with Alistair. My character made a lot of decisions involving his character, and much of the memorable story revolves around Alistair and his family, the country, and what Alistair's future role will be in it. Also, Alistair upset my apple cart sometimes. There was a 'first kiss' scene with Alistair that was very well done. The player could sort of see it coming, but there was just the right amount of surprise and attitude. It swept many players up in the moment. My overall judgement for every ending for a female character is that there is no 'good' ending. However, as a game, every ending is a haunting ending; a memorable ending. All endings leave the player wanting a better resolution. In terms of creation, this brings back the audience to the original author for more. In that light, I have to give the creators of Alistair's character credit for creating a memorable and complicated story.

Does the dwarf world save in da2 give you the drunken alister? I have to go check lol
