I have a collection of Japanese Maples planted in my yard, but I treat them like bonsais in a pot. In winter, I like to examine the branching of each one and prune it to be very sculptural and expose the architecture. Trees connect us to nature more than any other plant life. People in the UK seem to have a great appreciation for all that is horticulture. I like that!

Thank you kindly 🙏 I used to write haiku poetry and always considered oaks were the kings of trees, massive, powerful, aged, stately. Silver birches to me were the queens: upright, regal and graceful in their white bark with black diamond darts and weeping habit. Japanese maples were to my mind the showy princesses - much smaller in stature, delicate, and spectacularly beautiful.

@@TheBonsaiGarden So, being that I was out riding in my trail bike today, exactly what is a handbrake turn, and it sounds as though I should avoid one?
@TheBonsaiGarden

It’s a manoeuvre in a car where it brakes and turns suddenly. The fish did the same in the background. Showing off.

Nice video Jason. I constantly come across ugly grafts. Struggle to find decent maples now. I've been after a couple of cultivars recently but been let down. Bi hoo is one on the list for me and seiryu
@TheBonsaiGarden

Both great cultivars - bi-hoo with its yellow stems and Seiryu with its lacy leaf with red tinges to the edges.

Really enjoyed this video, thank you for taking the time to put it together. I have a palmatum garnet which is beautiful, but would love a bonsai maple. Do you propagate from cuttings? I've never noticed seeds on my plant.
@TheBonsaiGarden
@TheBonsaiGarden Жыл бұрын
Thanks, glad you enjoyed it. I don’t have success trying to grow from cuttings, but some with seeds. Only more mature trees develop seeds, which you can collect and plant from late autumn/fall onwards.

Loved this video! I'm new to bonsai, but have quite a few Japanese maples (you can never have too many). Why aren't the weeping varieties and dissectum leaves used in bonsai?
@TheBonsaiGarden
@TheBonsaiGarden 11 ай бұрын
I believe these tend to be more prone to burn in the sun, though there are some examples. Corin Tomlinson of Greenwood Bonsai has a well known one which is a green dissecting.

Thank you Jason, that was such a brilliant video on my favourite trees - so informative and interesting👍 but I have a question........ When would be the best time to do a major cut? I have a 5 year old Orange Dream that has two trunks that are too close together and start about 1" above the soil level - one of the trunks has to go but I want to get the timing right. The tree is very healthy and growing strong and I'm tempted to do it now, but is it the right time?
@TheBonsaiGarden
@TheBonsaiGarden Жыл бұрын
Thanks Bob. Two factors affect your decision: not wasting the time and energy of the tree developing unwanted foliage verses the best time for healing. Timing is everything in bonsai pruning. We must strike the delicate balance between maintaining the tree's health and promoting its desired shape. Bonsai pruning is all about selective removal. We carefully eliminate unnecessary branches and foliage, allowing the remaining ones to flourish and maintain a sense of proportion. It's a dance between shaping and preserving the natural beauty of the tree. I should say early summer for healing wounds - be sure to use cut paste to prevent too much sap loss, or winter/early spring to see the structure of the tree and prevent wasting stored energy.
@BobMatthews
@BobMatthews Жыл бұрын
@@TheBonsaiGarden Thank you Jason for your detailed response, I think it's time to get the tools out :) I will of coarse be using cut paste and keeping my fingers crossed for some rapid healing. All the best, Bob.
