Күн бұрынEvery modern cellular device has something known as a SIM card inside of it. Without a valid SIM card your phone, tablet, hotspot or router will be essentially invisible to a cellular network.
SIM is short for Subscriber Identity Module - and it is the tiny bit of circuitry that identifies your account to your carrier's network.
It's what holds your phone number and terms of your plan with your carrier.
SIM cards come in Nano, Micro and Mini size and are even embedded as eSIMs inside of devices. Some devices can have multiple SIM cards.
This video goes over the basics of SIM cards, shows how to swap them between devices, resize them with adapters or cutters and how to insert them into typical phones, hotspots and routers.

My carrier told me I HAD TO BUY a new smartphone because they were switching to a 5G network. They lied. Turned out, my old phone was fine. All I had to buy was a new sim card for one dollar plus 6 cents tax (provided by my carrier thru Amazon) and I could keep my 4G plan. I spent 1,000 dollars on 3 new phones which were NOT NEEDED. Two failed because they came with the wrong sim cards. No one had said anything about sim cards. Currently we are returning the last of the new cellphones and seeking 100% compensation. I should sue, but I felt it more important to inform other seniors about this scam.

Wrong again. My "carrier" was a reseller, not a carrier at all, piggybacked onto Verizon and they'd just sold their entire customer base to Verizon a year ago! I went thru 4 "new" smart phones before I got one working on 5G. They kept crashing. I thought it was me, but no, they were selling me refurbished equipment as new instead of brand new phones. They f'd up big time with the 3rd phone. It came to me w an active sim card still installed and an active phone number (not mine!). The very first call I received was from a skip tracer chasing down a bail jumper. The second was from an insurance agent looking for a settlement payment and the 3rd, a bank agent.

@@andrewzanas9387 5g is a buzz word for a latency benchmark of a modem not a radio single. The Chinese plan to launch a satellite system to provide premium broadband world wide at competitive cost which will be the end of the smartphone untility empire because the Chinese system would work on any smartphone/tablet or laptop with USB c Ethernet.

@@gotsm9959 5G has eclipsed 4G. Latency, or time to connect, is better only because 5G fr1 signals are being assigned to local cells. 4G basically uses the same frequencies as 5G fr1 but without incorporating additional localized cell group addresses, so 4G is now history. 5G fr2 systems will be jumping up into the gigabyte frequency ranges, where theoretically we could see the entire world on the same two duplex frequencies, but that won't happen because there will be too many channels for both personal telephony and commercial and government computer data transfer services. Shortly 6G will be coming into standard use with biometric data incorporated into injectable microchip-sets. Big Brother has arrived. Columbia University already has fully functioning prototypes ready to go.

Same might be said for the Store Techs? Currently talking with a local T-Mobile Store about upgrading a couple of 7 year old SIMs (TM9252) for use in 1-3 year old phones (1 LTE and 1 5G). They "work".... But not so much in rural areas with B71/N71 coverage... Which wasn't a thing at the time. T-Mobile claims on its site that a 5G SA phone needs a new SIM (Specifically R15... But maybe R12, TM9264, and TM9263 too can be updated). All for saving some time, money, and hassle... Will see what happens

Hi Guys - This was exactly the video I needed! I went ahead and got a new 8800L Jetpack to replace our oooold 5510. Per your video, I merely switched the SIM to the new unit and all is working perfectly, plus, I did not lose our pUDP. I also got the Netgear MIMO antenna. Your review is spot on. Works Great!

If I have hot spot and want to use a router to share my connection with other devices, would I put the SIM card from the hotspot to the router or do I need another SIM card for the router? (ie router cradlepoint)

You'd put it in the SIM slot of the modem you want to use to access your plan.

If you have a cellular enabled router, it does not need a hotspot to work.

First of all a big THANK Yoooo - My darn sim was a nanno sim, but I didn't realize HOW nanno that was until I started watching this video & realized there's still more nanno to go & punched out the frame around it further. I tell ya, I'm a petite size lady, but thinking of what big guys & gals with big plump fingers go through with these nanno things, is nerve wrecking!! Stupid nannos can fall, slip out of fingers & GET LOST!! I kept mine in check & FINALLY INSERTED IT INTO MY STUPID "SMART" PHONE - Kinda explains why so many people are stressed out & take to substances to calm down - THIS IS NERVE WRECKING (Thank Goodness I'm a "YOGI MAMMA" - Ommmmmmm Shaaanthi!?) In the UK SIMs are usually supplied as micro Sims with pop-out perforations to allow conversion to micro or nano SIMs.

Actually, I think in the UK they are supplied as MINI SIMs to allow conversion to micro or nano - or if we're being really pedantic they are supplied as a credit card sized item like 20 years ago!

I received a replacement iPhone verizon and it came w/ a new SIM card. I just used my original SIM card and kept the new one. Can I use this in other devices (if so which ones?) at the same time….or do I just save it in case old one breaks / malfunctions? Thanks.

can a sim card that came from a iPhone, can it be placed into a Android phone? and does the SIM card hold data that was in the previous phone, or does it just carry info from your previous data plan for the type of phone you had?

You can swap SIM cards if the phones are unlocked and compatible with the carrier. Your plan moves with the SIM.

About the sizes is not completely right. I had an older simcard that had bigger contacts protruding the smaller sizes. I did try to cut it up and it still worked, but you could see some innards exposed on the SIM, which was not ideal. I could luckily transfer my phone number to a new nano SIM, though, notice that some software on your phone doesn't like that and you have to reauthorize those.

You make excellent and good quality videos. Thank you. Here is a question which is a bit of a challenge perhaps you can offer a good solution. I have a normal SIM card with 5000 minutes calls and 600GB data. But once I insert it in a 4G router, I can't use any of those 5000 minutes to make calls. My service provider doesn't offer a duplicate SIM with the same phone number (T-Mobile has a great solution they call it Digits) but we don't have such a service in my country. Thanks for reading this request and trying to help, but I know the answer is going to be "Sorry, there is no easy solution".

What is the best way to upload your contacts from an outdated 3g phone to a new 4g phone? I tried cutting the old sim card and slipping It Into the new nano sim card track, and I got the message sim not provisioned. Thanks for any advice you might have.

Modern phones do not use the SIM card to store your contacts. There are apps out there that can back up your old contacts, or a phone store should be able to help.

I have a Android Smartphone which had a slot for the Simcard and another for a SD Card My phone got reset so I called tech support and he turned on my WIFI(something I ever did) and it drained $ 100.00 off the phone and its still inactive, I asked if there was a chance to get my number back and was told the number was recycled and might be on another phone but to know for sure I had to buy a new Simcard,I asked for compensation for the time I lost and was offered $ 50.00 but needed a active phone to add it to and needed a new Simcard anyway which costs $ 20.00 and do not know if the new Simcard even has airtime, So here I am looking at a phone I have to spend $ 120.00 dollars and still will not be able to use it, maybe more if I need to buy airtime Is there anything like resetting the Simcard? Please get back to me with any advice you can give me here.

You'll need to change the imei to a phone's imei. You can enable telnet via web gui and use something like putty to telnet into the device and use the command AT +EGMR=1,7 "New IMEI#" to change the imei. Theoretically it should work but there's no guarantee since I don't own the device.

Okay- we are switching from a Galaxy 7 to a 10. When I move the SIM card over it tells me that the card is locked, but does not ask for any pin number. I have power cycled several times. Any suggestions?

Wi-Fi will still work for serving, but you'll have no phone number with the SIM. If you need to place calls, you need a VOIP service/app.

Question I had bought a new in the box samsung tab a7 lite so when I turned on the device it asked for the sim card to proceed the next step for setting up, wich I open the sim card tray and placed the sim card, what happen when I placed the sim card it loaded the metro pcs purple screen and it remaind on for like 5 min, so I was wondering if the tablet froze, I opened up the sim card tray and check the sim card maybe I miss placed so as soon as I put it back the purple metro pcs was gone? did I made a mistake for opening the sim card while the screen was stuck or it was going to go away on its own

Physically, they can last for many years. But functionally, depends on your plan with your carrier and if you renew it.

My ATT Galaxy S10+ 5G, came with a new sim card. But the person at the ATT store used the card out of my old S8+. It's the same card that was in my S4, like three phones ago. I remember them trimming it down to fit the S8. Would I be better off using the newest card?

When I got my Pixel 6, back in October, it came with a new SIM for 5G. The old SIM, from my Pixel 2, would fit & work but only provide 4G, so that's one other thing to watch out for. My carrier, Rogers, is one of those that provides the 3 sizes in one card and you just push out the one you need. They also warn not to use the left over pieces as an adapter. Also, I was thinking that an eSIM would be useful for those traveling to another country. It would be a lot easier to just scan the QR code than to extract and possibly lose one SIM to replace it with one for the visited country.

@James Knott: Sim card are universal and not specific to 4g and 5g because the sim just verifies the utility. The modem is what determines 4gvs5g however those terms reflect a maximum bandwidth not continuous bandwidth so a utility can say they have 5g when the real time bandwidth is no where near that standard as long as they give you one 5minutes of premium bandwidth. Verizon is the only true flat rate in regards to not having data caps and including unlimited data sharing from a Smartphone on the flat rate.

@@gotsm9959 I did not get 5G until I replaced the SIM. I used the one that came with the phone. Also, what you get depends on what you pay for. A friend of mine, who has a Pixel 6 as I do, is on Koodo, a Telus flanker brand. Telus customers can get 5G, but not Koodo. Resellers also provide more limited service than the carrier they're reselling. So, it's not just dependent on the hardware.

@@James_Knott Yes you get what you pay for but most of those cheap Smart untility are shady because they they don't disclose that the limitations of their untility in advertising and sometimes it's only disclosed in the legal contract and those companies target and groom people they know are least likely to read the contract because most people work on a utmost good faith standard.

My cellphone (Motorola E5 Play) came with a SIM card already installed. My phone company recently sent me a new SIM card to install in my phone. Will replacing the old card with the new one change anything or erase any data or pictures etc. on my phone? Thank you

Okay, Im currently doing research for a little project that I want to make. Im an electrical engineer hobbyist, no degrees or anything, I just like to tinker, and Im in the process of making a handheld gaming console on my own. (No I wont be selling it or giving out prints. This is just to see what I can do) Is there a particular board or interface I can find that allows sim cards to be placed into the circuitry? Im trying to make it constantly mobile with android on it as well, and it would be nice to have a multi use device with a sim card that can get access to internet almost anywhere. Its a big project, Ive been working with a ton of devices and im just now getting to the sim card part and thats been throwing me off. Everything I search for just comes up with how sim cards work. Any and all information I can get would be awesome!

Thanks for the link and yes I do need data plan. I read where cellular camera users are having a problem with pairing and sim card failure so I figured maybe someone knows of a exterior sim that can pair easily with reolink cellular cameras.

My fire 7 warned of low storage. First I archived then took the plunge and bought an SD card recommended by amazon. No problem. It came and I installed it. I formatted it as internal storage. No problem. It asked for my choices for data to move. Done. Says it's moving data but nothing is happening. What I do wrong?

SD cards and SIM cards are not the same. You should contact your customer support for your device.

I have a Winegard on the roof of my Motorhome. It had an ATT Sim card in it when I bought the unit. I am trying to get another active Sim card to put into the Winegard now, but nobody has been able to understand what I mean. I tell them about the Winegard but nobody can understand what I am talking about. Shoud I just say I need a Sim card for a "hot" spot? I use about 100 gigs a month on my cell phone. Can I get a 100gig plan to be put on a Sim card, prepaid? Thank you.

I can see what you mean by SIMs.. I have a VMO service (total wireless) runs in VZW network. I had to trick them into activating my unlocked Post paid VZW Note 8 SM-N950U. It worked for 4 days then I lost data... It appears I was "banned" No one can tell me WHY, a postpaid Note 8 will not even work on VZW's own prepaid service. It's all about the IMEI number. I also understand that.. but same network and basically same phone. I wished i knew why they made my former flagship phone a paperweight. My only reasoning is good old fashioned $$$. Also, now that VZW is retiring CDMA, and everything is going pure 4G LTE, 5G, VoLTE i don't think much matters now with phone brands other than IMEI, or LTE frequency number? I am referring to the phones that have both CDMA/GSM radios.

I have a Galaxy S5 Straight Talk phone. It was dropped & after I paid $130 to have a shop place a new screen in it, the phone no longer receives a good data signal. Maybe 30% strength? I have tried many resets/ I believe it's called a APN reset? I took it back to the shop and of course they say they had nothing to do with that! My sister gave me a Galaxy S 7 Straight Talk phone. Her SIM card is still in phone. Her boyfriend bought her a different phone & had her phone number transferred over to the different phone. This phone has a different carrier. I tried to reactivate the Galaxy S7 Straight Talk phone with the Straight Talk SIM card in it since it is a no contract/ pay-as-you-go every month. They trying to tell me that phone cannot work on Straight Talk. I told them it is a Straight Talk phone with a Straight Talk SIM. My sister just stopped using it and had the phone number transferred to a different phone with a different provider. They're telling me I need to buy a new SIM card for that phone. I believe my Galaxy S5 SIM card would work in the Galaxy S7 phone if I cut it down to size. This straight talk people are hard to understand over-the-phone. They're just hard to communicate with. They are from another country. Does any of this sound possible to you? I hope you understand what I'm saying?

I bought a new cell phone Samsung AO2s from Verizon. They did not say anything about SIM card. Recently I was not able to call out except for emergency only because the phone has no SIM card. I went to Verizon. the guy turned off and turned on the phone, without saying anything else. What do I have to do ? Where to buy the SIM card? Thanks

So, a cell phone has to have a sim card to work ? My last cell , a moto g, worked without a sim. I'm thinking maybe having a sim card gives me more info than I need ? I know absolutely nothing about sim card, obviously. My new phone is a moto also. Do you have to pay a monthly charge separate from your carrier ?

Not really. I am answering from a sim-less phone. I think it is only for voice calls ( which in this day and age not many make) and texts But for text you can substitute quick emails. Notifications will even show up on your phone screen. Plus you can choose the device without regards to the provider as it is a device only deal. No pesky card 💳 to fumble with... no bills to pay

I have relied on your great product reviews and advice for years. So here is a question that you might be able to answer. I know it is a little off topic but maybe you know something I don't. About 6 months ago Verizon started throttling down my MoFi 4500-4GXeLTE to the point it would not work anymore. I was grandfathered in with a unlimited/unthrottled plan. They said I was using too much data. So it has been disconnected for 6 months. I went back to the Verizon Store and they said my MoFi is no longer compatible on their network. They could not explain what happened. Any ideas?

Depends on what specific plan you are using - but the MoFi 4500 is still an eligible LTE device and compatible with their plans authorized for use in data only devices.

So here’s my scenario.. I needed to upgrade a Verizon phone to another Verizon phone, but had to take the blank SIM card out of the new phone and insert the SIM card from my old phone, along with a USB cable, to transfer files such as, pictures, videos, and etc. So now I’m wondering, do I have to leave the SIM card from my old phone, in my new phone, for that information to stay put, now that it’s transferred? Or do I put the blank/new SIM card back in the new phone? I can’t find this answer anywhere, so any help would be much appreciated. :)) 👍

Are you perhaps confusing SD card with SIM card? SIM card just holds your carrier account information, and nothing else.

my phone is cracked and my wife bought me a new phone but how do I tranfer my number over , I’m with T-Mobile..do I have to go to the store for the whole process or can I do it over the phone ? Usually you can just move the SIM card over to the new phone. If you have any issues, just take both phones to a T-Mobile store for assistance.

AT&T never sent me a cell phone they sent me the SIM card. Most of these companies will just out now lie about it. If your cell phone doesn't have a SIM card. You do not have any service. It does Mike a difference what kind of phone you use. The biggest Bull shit is when they send you a phone with a battery that you cannot remove. That means you're SIM card goes behind the battery. Where most of them go. That little SIM card is your phone. If you have to buy the phone from them and you can be sure the SIM card has already been installed....before you receive the phone.
