We just finished All About Spelling level 1 with my 9 year old 3rd grader. This video shows my thoughts on using it, how to do a lesson, why I’m waiting to start with my 2nd grader, and how to use the cards, letter tiles, and teachers guide! It’s a mastery based program with a focus on the sounds within a word. Kids will memorize spelling rules to help them figure out how to spell a sound. No worksheets, no spelling tests. I learned a ton and level 2 here we come.

I am starting this program with my 9th grade daughter this year. She is struggling with the idea of starting back at the beginning but she struggles so much with spelling and nothing I have tried has worked for her. She is dyslexic and has a hard time with reading as well. This video was so helpful to see the program used with an older student, maybe not as old as mine, but to see what you chose to skip just showed me how quickly we should be able to get her through and still not miss the important concepts she needs. I wish I had this program back when I first started homeschooling about 17 years ago!!

Thank you for this closer look at Level 1! We're going to start homeschooling next year and my son will be in 5th grade. I was going to start him at level 4, even though the company recommends starting at 1 no matter their age. Seeing this, I'm realizing he definitely needs to start here. I think we'll do this level during the summer since I think he'll move through it quickly, but there are certainly some of those rules and the vowel sounds that he doesn't know.

Very helpful! Starting this with my 10 year old son. I read on the All About Learning website to work 20 minutes a day on spelling, but honestly even for my 10 year old that’s a lot. We have only done two lessons and they were 10-15min. Ithink knowing your child/student and when they are done is key. I also believe that working one on one with student is why this process works so well. So it was smart to make the changes you made to do that with your son. I also would not want to start this program until about 3rd grade with my children. Before that I would rather them really working on those reading skills. I am definitely going to be looking into all about reading when my 2 year old is a couple years older. I see my 10 year old moving through books 1-2 of the spelling this year quickly! Excited to see improvements in his writing!❤

Thanks for sharing and I completely agree about the time amount being more effective with 10-15 min vs 20. We are going to be finishing level 2 with my 10 year old 4th grader this year, and I made the decision yo actually postpone starting with my other 3rd grader till she’s 10 and in 4th grade. This is in part influenced by the Charlotte Mason method not to add extras beyond reading and copywork until age 10, but also because she’s not reading as fluently as my oldest was at this age so I want her to keep cementing in her reading skills before even thinking about spelling. It’s slowly becoming more relevant to her as she’s writing more, so it’s neat to see the natural progression! By next year she’ll have more reason to spell and also a better visual bank of words from having read more books. Thanks for your comment and hope you have a great year!

Glad it was helpful! We’re now in level 3 with my 4th grader and do it less often. It’s been a great program. Using the tile app instead of tile pieces has cut down on time too.

This was such a helpful and thorough review of the program. Thank you so much for taking the time to do this. I have added All About Reading and All About Spelling to my little ones curriculum recently, to try to get him on better ground with his reading and spelling, and we are still in the early pages. So this really helped me to have an overview of that to expect and how it can be used. So thorough. Thank you again! ❤

So glad it helped you! We’re continuing on this year finishing level 2 with my upcoming 4th grader and I’ve decided to wait to do Spelling level 1 with my next kiddo till she is a 4th grader. Want to see her reading more on her own before we start and also we are aiming towards a more Charlotte mason approach holding off till around age 10. Hope you have the best year!

@@LizBlueandHazel Hi. Thank you! Sounds great that you are moving forward with it. It's really helpful when you find something that is working well. I understand what you mean about waiting until 10 yo for your other child. That's what is so nice about being at home to homeschool; we can really tailor our curriculum to make it fit for us. I am enjoying being able to do that with my little ones. All the best, and many blessings to you and your family this homeschool year.

Will you (did you) continue with level 2? Why or why not?
@LizBlueandHazel
@LizBlueandHazel 2 ай бұрын
We did! We went very slowly through level 2 this year, and are onto level 3. Best thing I added was to switch to the tile app, which saved time and frustration from losing tile pieces/toddler tossing them around. I love going through the “rules” of the program slightly behind grade level. It’s easier and faster to pick up the rules and gives them more time to see correct spelling in books they’ve read.

I'm thinking of starting my 9-year-old son on All About Spelling level 1 over the summer. Do you think I could make my own letter tiles or is the $25 interactive kit necessary?
@LizBlueandHazel
@LizBlueandHazel Жыл бұрын
Good q. The easiest but not cheapest option would be to buy the $20 tile app. But you could make your own, especially for level 1 (and there’s Black and white pics inside the teachers guide with examples of which tiles to use). But it’d be a lot of work and you’d have a lot of small paper pieces without magnetic backs. The part you do need from the kit is the spelling card dividers which can be bought for $6 and you’ll want the spelling box to put them in with and all the cards from the student pack.

How many letter tiles does it come with? 2 letters each?
@LizBlueandHazel

Yes it comes with 2 letters each and then some of the sound combos they’ll be working with. There are tiles that won’t get used till future levels in there as well.

Do you need two sets of the cards to teach the kids separately?
@LizBlueandHazel
@LizBlueandHazel 3 ай бұрын
The program recommends having one card box per child. There are some helpful blog posts from people who have combined 2 kids in 2 different levels into 1 box, but it seems a little tricky. I’ll have 2 students in diff levels in the fall but haven’t decided yet if we’ll just get two boxes or not. I’ll probably get each child their own box so it’s easier on my brain 😅.

If you had a 5th grader would you still start on level 1?
@LizBlueandHazel
@LizBlueandHazel Жыл бұрын
I would start on level 1 with a 5th grader. He or she will flyyy through most and you’ll finish the 24 lessons in under a month at that age im guessing. But you’ll pick up a few foundational things and learn the flow of the program easier on level 1 than in upper levels. I read a blog of a gal who started someone even older on level 1 and recommends that, he just finished much quicker than a younger child since his reading skills were much better, the hard part is feeling like you’re wasting time or money, but I try not to consider it a waste. Also as a follow up, i was originally going to start my upcoming 3rd grade 8.5 year old on level 1 this year, but now plan to wait to start with her till 4th grade. We are switching to a more Charlotte mason approach which waits till around age 10 for any formal spelling/grammar so she’ll now start level 1 in 4th grade. It’ll be “too” easy then, but in some ways that makes it easier for both of us and I for sure want to start at the beginning. Hope that helps!

@@LizBlueandHazel Thank you. It does help. I was very concerned about the money. But I just found someone selling levels 1 and 2 perfect condition for $50 total! No tiles but I plan to get the app anyway! I appreciate your advice from your own experience. 😀
