Bruce Springsteen has been entertaining me for 40 years. Seen him twice and I don’t know of any other entertainer that gives as much to his fans and I have seen a lot of bands. They call him the Boss for a reason.

Omg, "The River" is definitely in my all time top 10 albums. Not many people agree with me but I think it's one of his best.

“Tear drops on the city, Bad Scooter searching for his groove….” The Boss is definitely the greatest storyteller & performer. Ghost of Tom Joad, Magic really great albums. Bobby Jean definitely the sweetest song ever written about friendship ( live 75-85 is best version with the saxophone at the end. Beautiful yet chilling. Keep rockin’ Boss & feel better. His concerts were the most dynamic and powerful thing you could experience. The love of music was palpable and exceedingly athletic. His band was the hardest working in the era.

Back in the days( 1976) I was listing to The Clash, Ramones etc but one day I heard Bruce on the radio and I've thought this guy is something special. Since that day I listen to Bruce's music at least once a week. By the way I still like the Ramones and The Clash 😉

Darkness is my favorite album of all time though I love all of his work he is phenomenal at his trade none better and I am grateful I have lived during his time I can’t imagine life without his music in it he’s an inspiration

After watching this I decided to Google Springsteen tickets, and was elated to read that he is coming to Vancouver in November. Then I looked at the price of the tickets that were available, and they start at $400 US ($525 CAD). I guess it's been a long time since he was a champion of the working man.

The live "Barcelona" version of Darkness just rips me up every time I hear it or watch the video.

I discovered Bruce when i was a kid in the early 90s sometime. We had a VHS of one of his love performances but also had muic videos for Glory Days and others too. That was probably the most influential moment of my musical life and especially as a musician myself.

I was 15 in 1975, Zep, the who, stones, Beatles, Hendrix, Bruce fit in to that group, that's how big he was back then.

By the time Bruce hit the airwaves I was already a Billy Joel fan. Like many fans, it was much later in life I looked at Bruce and fully get what the big deal was. I never could embrace Bob Dillon, His voice and what I deemed lack of talent turned me off. Only just recently I learned about his lyrics and have an appreciation for him. I was born in the early 60’s.

I was a Junior in high school when he appeared on the covers of Time and Newsweek at the same time. While aware of him, he did nothing for me. I was much more into the harder side of rock. Then, a couple of years later, I went to spend a three day weekend with my cousin and his friends and all they listened to was Born To Run and Darkness On The Edge Of Town. After being immersed incessantly in the music, I became a huge fan. Sadly, never liked anything after either of those very much.

To the guy saying that the Dylan/Springsteen comparison is not legit, I'd say it's absolutely legit. Not from a musical point of vue, but because they are telling the stories of lower class american people living in their times, and their songs are a testimony of their own times.

Imagine...some guy from New Jersey, his voice is a bit rough, great songs but they do not sell. One day your band backs up Chuck Berry at the University of Maryland... a year or two later Born to Run is popular, then he plays Sweet Little SIxteen and morphs into Churck Berry for a few minutes.

Bruce really to me was the last rockstar with staying power.

History came to its end in 1998 with Windows 98. There is no future left to come, in best case there may come a redeemer, a final messiah. But in arts, polics, in culture in general there is nothing left in the west...

At one hour, Robert Christgau, self-proclaimed "music critic", says there's a "sprightliness" about Guthrie that Springsteen can't match. What does that mean? Guthrie was great for his time. There's no comparison. Why does Robert try? These music critics can kiss my tush. They never really describe anything, it's all an in-joke to them, making these meaningless blanket criticisms. Springsteen, Simon, Dylan. All just shockingly good.

Way before my time but I'm interested in the pop culture of the pre internet era in the 70s and 80s. My question is just how big was he after Born to Run and before Born in the USA compared to other artist of that era? I personally like his work before his 1980 The River Album. Since then all his music sounds like an extension of The River with only a few exceptions. I think he should do a metal album or something exotic and get away from his usual sound for a change. Streets of Philadelphia was one of the rare occasion he broke from that sound since Darkness on the Edge of Town. Also Born to Run was a great album too but he overused the Saxophone on that album and the song.

I watched this entire documentary, and I just can't leave alone the comments of Larry David Smith who wrote a book about Bruce. And I'll say this directly to him. Sir, I sincerely believe that your personal opinions about Bruce and his music are incredibly inaccurate! It's almost as if you are disagreeing with the messages that most people who follow Bruce understand as true. I'll go chronologically as per the documentary. Let's start quickly with the "4 Mindless Party Songs"? What? Then, "Independence Day", and no ambition?? Really? That's the questions your looking for the answers to in this song? In Mansion on the Hill, he is not sitting in a car in the woods staring down into someone's house, stalking a family because of jealousy, self-pity, or bitterness. He is admiring the very expensive and glamorous "Mansion" from a distance, reflecting on the fact that a common working man would only dream of acquiring such a house. In Atlantic City, he not looking for a cheap way of making money because he's lazy and a slacker, he's telling the story of a person who has worked his whole life, and still can't find any way to get ahead, with bills pilling up, and no other way to rectify his very desperate situation. You describe "Used Cars" literally!! My man, your starting to worry me that you can't see the irony in the song, and can't see the metaphor of a "Used Car" compared to hitting the lottery and never owning a used car again? Scarier yet, is that YOU ACTUALLY WROTE, AND GOT PUBLISHED A BOOK ABOUT BRUCE SPRINGSTEEN!!! But the kicker, and the point where I realized that you sir, are not a smart person, and furthermore, have absolutely no no business writing about about Bruce Springsteen, Superman, or the Lucky Charms guy!!! This was an informative documentary and I enjoyed it except for southern commentators moralizing throughout the documentary. Everything isn't so churchy literal guy.

Several Facts about Bruce Springsteen. 1. He's not that dynamic of a guitarist. Most of his music tends to be basic guitar work and he's used about 20 chord variations in total since his first Album in 1972. 2. Born to Run was NOT the smash hit album that his fans like to remember it being. It barely sold 1 million copies in it's first year, barely enough for Columbia not to drop him from their label. In fact. Some considered it falling short of sells expectations given the publicity and marketing campaign surrounding it. 3. Darkness on the Edge of Town was his last innovative album that doesn't sound like the 3rd CD of The River. 4. Springsteen received his first Grammy Nomination in 1981 for best male Vocals on The River but lost out to Rick Springfield... Oddly enough. 5. The River was actually when Springsteen mania began and when his fanbase expanded Nationwide and in Europe and elsewhere. Prior to that Album, Springsteen was simply a fringe artist who's fanbase was centered between New York, Boston, Philadelphia and to some degree, Chicago. Basically the area within 500 miles of New Jersey. 6. In order to get Columbia to agree to release Nebraska, Springsteen promised record executives that it's follow-up would repeat the sells of The River and produce a top 10 hit. Very little was spent by Columbia to promote what was seen as a waste of money by the label. Nebraska has barely sold 1.5 million copies since it was released. 7. Born in the U.S.A did not debut at #1 on the billboard album charts. It entered at #9 on the charts and actually under sold the River in it's first week. The following week it climbed to #4 barely selling better than The River in it's second week and actually looked like a flop until Dancing in the Dark hit the top 5 singles charts and slung Born in the USA into the top spot for 4 weeks but then dropped to #2 behind Prince's Purple Rain album which stayed at the top spot for the rest of 1984. Born in the USA would then reclaim the top spot in Jan of 1985 for 3 weeks and remain on the charts a total of 84 weeks, beating out both Thriller and Purple Rain for length of time on the billboard album charts. Hence why it out sold Purple Rain (15 million copies to 13 million) even though Purple Rain was the dominant album of 1984. 8. The Born in the USA world tour was the first to gross more than 90 million dollars and actually broke the record for most attended event in history until Michael Jackson a Bad tour between 1987 and 1989. 9. Bruce Springsteen and the E Street Band Live 75/85 was Springsteen's first album to debute at #1. It sold 3 million total units and 13.5 million copies. A record breaker at the time. Technically it is his second highest selling album and 5th highest selling album of the 1980s. Born in the USA is the 3rd highest selling album of that decade. The River it 28th. 10. Tunnel of Love was a disappointment for Columbia. It failed to debute at #1 and took over a month to get to the top of the charts and only remained there for a single week. This dispite the fact, Brilliant Disguise was a top 5 hit. 11. All totalled Springsteen is probably the biggest rock star in history ... In terms or album sells and tickets sold ...and is the only recording artist to outdo Michael Jackson in the 1980s. Michael Jackson sold just 4 million more albums than Springsteen in that decade but Springsteen sold twice as many tickets. So Springsteen narrowly outsold Michael Jackson and everyone else during that era. 12. More albums were sold between 1982 and 1986 than in any 4 year period before or since. I'm fact. More albums were sold in that four years than in the rest of the 1980s put together. Half of all albums sold during that 4 year period was from Michael Jackson, Bruce Springsteen, Prince and Maddona. Note. I'm not exactly a fan. His music was and is before my time but I love the history of pop culture since it's rise in the Jazz Age and the history of popular music. Personally, I prefer the far more complex guitar style of Rick Springfield and consider him as the most underated artist of that era. Sorry but Jesse's Girl has a cross generational appeal in a way none of Springsteen's have. In fact, outside of Born in the USA, very few Americans under 50 are all that familiar with Springsteen or his music and those that are, it has very little, if any appeal to them. I personally think he over uses the saxophone in songs and places it doesn't belong and has too many instruments playing at once they drown out each other... Which is why I rate Darkness on the Edge of Town as his best album. Sparse sax solos (Badlands and Prove it All Night) and a more stripped down sound and great vocals. Lucky Town is also a great but very underrated album but that fake Southern accent he started using on The River is hard to listen to.

Dude Homerun Derby, Chevy’s and apple pie! Don’t know what it is about this guy, Mellencamp and Bob Seger that I just don’t like their Everyman imagine. Don’t get me wrong I like them as artists and I bought their records back in the day. Idk what I’m saying but the imagine just seems a bit simple. I like my rock stars to be pretentious, inaccessible and have issues (dead serious). Just seems like it makes them more of a star. Bruce addresses big important topics. His topics are his strength. But lyrically, in terms of diction, lexicon, and sheer linguistic creativity, he’s not a patch on Dylan. Not even remotely close. Nor is he a patch on Joni Mitchell or Paul Simon. And musically is incredibly simple and safe. Springsteen is over rated.
