This episode was filmed 9th & 10th September 2022.
We are back in Norway from our Christmas Day episode in the UK. Today we continue our journey north towards Bergen.
Ken discovers that Norwegian drivers are not as placid as they seem.
After skipping breakfast we need an early lunch and find a perfect spot at a disused ferry port.
We are quickly learning how the ferries operate and take one from Jektevik to Hodnanes with a stop at Nordhuglo without getting off at the wrong port!
We find a peaceful waterside park up to try some Norwegian doughnuts then carry on our journey, catching yet another ferry at Våge.
After struggling to find a place to spend the night we decide to treat ourselves to a meal out.
Plans change in the morning as it is such a sunny day we take the tram into Bergen, look around the fish market and catch the funicular, Floibanen for some amazing views.

8:20 the reason why everyone is driving infront of you and rushing ahead is simple: People driving vans in Norway is not a new thing, there are tons of ''van'' tourism in Norway, and everyone hates driving behind vans or trailers, or anything ''slow or large'' on long stretches, because they ''clog'' up the traffic, and are most likely causing many potential or actual dangerous situation in the traffic, not the van or heavy vehicle in itself, but how people might do reckless drive-by's to get ahead of it in traffic if the person behind the wheel is impatient. So the fact that you ''stood there'' on the end at the ferry was most likely a ''sign'' to the other drivers that you wanted to be a good guy and ''let them go ahead'', so that is why they rushed, since you are driving a van and they thought you were giving them the go-ahead.

I certainly think it was because they feared I would hold them up. We do drive slower than most traffic. I try my best to let people pass as I know what can happen when you don’t 👍

@@janelem3448 There are quite a few tourists in Norway...:) Bread is good in Norway, but it costs quite a lot. Canning is not something ordinary people use, but have a few cans at the cabin. Not just Bergen. The whole of Norway has changed in record time. You won't recognize some places - actually. You will no longer find anything that is not restored, new or completely up to date. Norway is otherwise fully digitized in all areas. You never go to the bank, to a public office - you serve yourself in every way.

Although you were lucky with the weather, I just want to add that the driest month of the year in Bergen (and probably most of the West coast) is June, with July not far behind. September is surprisingly the wettest month on average. I have noticed from watching many travelling youtubers that Norway is often visited in late summer or early autumn. My advice is always to come in June. No guarantees, but it maximizes your chances of good weather.

Ken is so funny! "They're dry and plain as an old boot. --- One more." :D Smultringer are better freshly made. The ones you get prepackaged from the grocery store are quite dry. Also, regarding the traffic control where there's road works, it depends on the amount of traffic on a road. More traffic, more control, but generally speaking, Norwegian drivers are quite calm. If you're on a highway/expressway though, or close to major cities there can, as anywhere else, be a bit more aggressiveness. I love your showcase of Norway. I hope you'll come back some day to visit the interior parts too!

When at a ferry, the ferrydirector guy in the highvis tells you when it's your turn to drive. You were in a lane with no direct out, you were supposed to wait till the others had driven off and for the ferry guy to give you the signal. Trust me, I've taken the ferry countless times as I lived right nearby for years and have relatives all around those areas. Commenting without having seen the rest of the video, but in case you guys don't address it, you're taking a detour taking that ferry. If you had continued driving on the main road another 15-20 minutes, you'd have reached another ferry, taking you closer to Bergen. That's the main route

If you come up north again later I suggest visiting the office of the local transportation company in whatever city you're in and buying a one day ticket or one week ticket orr whatever length of time you plan to bring the area if you are still struggling with the payments. It's also honestly cheaper if you go 3 or more trips in a day. You can also try to ask in a local kiosk as they sometimes sell tickets alongside other things in some cities. They aren't actually doughnuts - Smultringer is a sort of christmas cake without yeast. They're baked with cardamum and salt of hartshorn and with sour milk instead of normal milk. It's an old traditional cake here in Norway that tastes best fresh and warm. You can find regular (american) doughnuts in any shop that sells fresh bread though, and also "Berlinerboller" which is a donut bun filled with raspberry jam and coated in sugar.

No they certainly want you to pay for things but actually being able to do that is a challenge at times. We expected to pay a conductor but there wasn’t one.
@Luredreier
@Luredreier Жыл бұрын
@@LifeistooshortCK There's never a conductor in Norwegian public transportation anymore. Just ticket inspectors at random times. In my city I just use a phone app 99% if the time. People who use public transportation often tends to get a card, paying for 6 months or a year up front then they use that for unlimited traveling within the zones paid for. Then your ticket is inspired at random times. Sometimes it's a year between inspections. Sometimes it's several times a week. They got inspectors hired all year, but they'll take random routes each time and there's no way of knowing when they'll inspect *your* line.

Heeey, it's my city! The tram tickets do seem to have some trouble with foreign payments, I've experienced. Once encountered a couple of Chinese tourists who were struggling. In the end I just bought them each a ticket and then they shoved ten Euro into my hand and rushed off to the tram. Been years but the note's still in my wallet unexchanged; honestly I have no idea where to go to get that done and I'm too lazy to look it up, ha ha.
