Taiping Rebellion was essentially, one of the main reasons that Qing collapsed. Not the Opium Wars, I would say that this essentially sealed the Manchu's fate. Prior to the Taiping Rebellion, the Qings already lost the cities closer to the coast of the Sea of Japan area by conceding cities like Shanghai, Guangdong and Suzhou to the foreigners and within a span of like 10-20 years, foreigners revitalized and quickly changed the entire landscape that they were given control of into massive metropolitans and have cordial relationships with the people in said city, like Shanghai. When the Taiping tried taking Shanghai, they too shocked the foreigners and with their assets in total anarchy and in fear of the losses, the foreign delegates soon broker a deal with the local Qing officials that they're gonna raise an army with the funds from their side of the deal with rich Chinese merchants in Shanghai and deter and even defeat the encroaching Taiping army whilst the whole structure of the army would be folded into the Qing Army structure and soon, the Shanghai citizens soon raised an army with western officials but Chinese soldiers with modern weaponry of its time and that army was to be called the "Ever Victorious Army" (常勝軍). They then employed 2 of their best officers who were mercenaries for help in the form of Fredrick Townsend Ward and Charles "Chinese" Gordon. With these weaponry and now actual European soldiers who had battle experience in seemingly modern tactics, they smashed the encroaching Taiping Army and even chased them out and fought till the end with the Qing Army. That being said, China had experienced with modern stuff and even tried to modernize like Japan after witnessing just how much powerful western military structure was and how great western guns was against the ones they were using during the Taiping Rebellion which was shameful as the Taipings even had modern rifled muskets in some ranks against what was totally smoothbore that the Qing had coupled with bows and arrows which was woefully inadequate for modern scale combat. Thus after the war, they quickly tried to remedy the issue by implementing self-strengthening movements by procuring modern guns and cannons from foreign countries like Austria, Prussia and even the British. Heck at one point, the Qing even managed to be the 8th largest navy in the entire world and the strongest naval force in Asia with it being the 1st Asian nation to have not one but two metal-clad gunships with the Beiyang Fleet. However corruption, nepotism, sheer incompetency and also greed caused the whole "self-strengthening" system to stagnate and when the Japanese poked and tried their luck against the Chinese and the Qing during the First Sino-Japanese War, the whole Beiyang Fleet, despite being the biggest in Asia, crumbled as parts were siphoned out by officers to be sold in the black market causing the whole Beiyang Fleet to be in tatters as war started. After the disastrous defeat, the new emperor of China, Guangxu, had enough and behind his regent's back, Cixi, started a silent revolt where he would push the "self-strengthening" movement into the forefront again by indoctrinating many foreign but modified to "Chinese-style" ideology like setting up a few modernized western-style army groups, setting up a central university, remodelling the education system to focus more on math, science and any other subjects instead of just Confucian texts and many more but the two that really ticked the conservative Qings off was Guangxu's policy of abolishing the absolute monarchy power structure and changing it to an constitutional monarchy and also, the end of the stipend system where aristocrats and nobles were draining the coffers by doing absolutely fucking nothing but still getting paid. Guangxu's reforms were ticking the corrupted Qing officials off and even Cixi was fearful of his resolutions being passed, especially the "abolishing the absolute monarchy" part. For context, Cixi herself has been the forefront of all Qing affairs prior to Guangxu even being the emperor and that's not all. For centuries upon centuries, China had always been ruled by the emperor and to a lesser context, the regents for dynasties thus suddenly asking it to be a constitutional monarchy would mean that the Aisin Gioro family (The Manchu line that ruled China at that point) would be controlled by outsiders while Cixi would not hold absolute powers anymore and she's having none of it. Thus after Prince Duan caught wind from Yuan Shikai, one of the most powerful generals in the Qing Army which coincidentally had one of the modern Qing Armies that some of Guangxu's men had bribed Yuan to murder Duan and his entire family to stage an uprising, Cixi had enough, once again fearful that Guangxu was being brainwashed by the "pesky westerners" and instead ordered Yuan Shikai to link up with the Gansu's Ma muslim clique to enter the capital city and take down Guangxu in a coup which, they did. Guangxu would eventually be placed in eternal house arrest in 1898 and the whole reform movement would last only 104 days and then stagnate again which would eventually spiral out of control into what was later known as the Boxer Rebellion.

Waah this is such a good video Owen, my first time watching your youtube video and I'm thoroughly entertained :D I was checking the time on the video and I realized there's not much left and left me very sad. I'll be subscribed in case you'll make another long form video like this, it's so fun! ❤️❤️❤️❤️ Another compliment: you have such a good video essay voice, it's not annoying and the editing and meme is very funny, but my suggestion to consider is to add some sort of low volume music? because the start of the video seem to be a bit quiet, but idk anything about editing actually, I just feel the start was a bit quiet, the mid to end was really good though, I was on the edge of my sit

2:06 Correction: Nepal and Bhutan weren't a part of Colonial India. I can only speak for Nepal since I'm a little knowledgeable on it, Nepal never really got colonized as both the Rana Regime and Britain were very close( This is pretty much the only "good" credit Nepalis will ever give to the Ranas since the regime's reign is also known overall as the Dark age of Nepal. The Ranas even started the entire British Gorkha Regiment system which helped Britain through all its wars and conflicts, even after the Ranas fell, the Shah Dynasty and the subsequent Republic still hold close ties with Britain. Britain was also the first nation to fully recognize the sovereign state of Nepal. So the map is incorrect. Otherwise great video👍

Digging your content a lot. As a heads up the 'Great Britain' flag shown in the early parts of your video is the one from 1707 I believe with the acts of union combining the crowns of England & Scotland (UK of GB). In 1801 Ireland was also incorporated into the UK which meant updating the flag to include the St Patrick's cross which is the flag the UK still uses today. So for the period of the first opium war / Taiping rebellion the flag shown would not be correct :)

All of this could've been avoided if the examination system was never implemented by the Qing, who had every reason to not have it as they were technically outsiders in the south, and could've made something up from scratch

Reminds me of the Shimabara Rebellion of Japan. Japanese Peasants we're being ABUSED by the Upper Class, so when Christianity came, they converted, and used it as an reason to rebell against their Tyrannical Overlords, sad thing is, they needed more people. They were isolated in the south, it was too early for their Rebellion. Also reminds me of Nazi Germany, where one Man....Can change the Fate of a Country or the whole world.

The US and Britain were not "forged in war". What fucking stupid tier chart was that? Yes sure, the US fought a war of independence -- like nearly all countries that have become independent. By the same token, Switzerland should be in the same tier (but realistically, any but the most peaceful), since they also fought several wars to achieve independence from the HRE and Habsburgs. Seriously how can you put the US even in anything but the second or third to last tier? US history is insanely peaceful compared to any moderately sized European or Asian country. I don't even wanna watch the rest of the video. This is the effect of showing a questionable grasp on history.
