What I love about this is the fact that the cgi people actually took the time to detail it and make it realistic. Its not just a bunch of random holograms. You can see it showing his altitude, flight orientation, the positions of nearby planes, the land topography, information about the suit. Really nice touches.

It's cool to see how the hud system evolved through the years, aesthetically and related to the information displayed, notice how a good work was done by the time Avengers, it has a kind of LED texture going on, but, strangely they didn't follow that trend later on. Towards the end, it was more pure aesthetics: several layers going on with deep of field activated, even some lens flares, but the data shown is almost blurred out contrary to how it was at the beginning, my guess is that they decided to be more "gimmicky" and less "real." Btw, I'm talking only of the "inside the helmet" shots, not the POV ones, of course, those show clearly some data bits even at the end. Great job and of course, RDJ and Iron Man will be terribly missed, let's see which hero will carry on this HUD legacy from now on.

The scene in Avengers at 5:12 where he swaps into battle mode is so cool. When it gets dark you can see the light coming in from the eye slits

All the hard work that went into creating the Mark ll HUD is not appreciated enough by most people. The VFX artists, didn’t have any reference in 2008 for what an Iron Man helmet HUD would look like and they had to make it completely from scratch. They had to make it realistic but also make it futuristic, but also not too sci-fi, and fit Tony as a tech genius. They needed to make it interesting but not distracting, they needed to convey depth so we weren’t just distracted by the fact Tony was in a black void, and they needed to make it evolve with Tony. They needed to make it work with the three different ways Tony could interact with it(Looking at what he needed, asking for it, or Jarvis providing it even when not asked), and they needed to make it organized, and now it’s practically a staple in MCU movies. Even now children at home can made an Iron man HUD easily on any basic VFX software. All because the Iron Man VFX artists paved the way by wanting to make something awesome yet feasible and pushed the boundaries to make something that was never done before at the time.

Best HUD is the Avengers'. It's also curious how Tony appears to be left-handed (uses his left eye to target in every movie) except for Civil War (uses right eye). So now I'm confused. Was Tony left or right-handed????
