Coming up, an interview with Paul Roberts of Sniff 'n' the Tears about one of my favorite songs of 1979, Driver’s Seat. Technically the band is a one-hit wonder and what a story behind this one… First of all, Driver’s Seat sat on the shelf for years… because the label was changing distributors.. and then a worker’s strike at the record plant might’ve kept it from being a #1 hit because the factory couldn’t print the record so fans couldn’t buy it. And then when it did become a hit the band immediately broke up… but then a decade later the song finally hit #1 when it was used in an insurance commercial. The long and winding story of the classic Driver’s Seat is next on Professor of Rock.

The 70s 1 Hit Wonder you need to hear NOW! Coming up….It’s an extraordinary episode of Bottled Lightning- where a hit song took years to finally get a release… Years after writing and demoing it the band was finally able to record it and then it sat for a year because the label was changing distribution.. then it struggled in its homeland because when people wanted the record it wasn’t available because the record pressing plant had gone on strike. Finally, in 1979, it became a hit as the perfect combination of 70s guitar and 80s Moog synth and then the band broke up… only to have the song hit #1 again in 1991. The singer and writer of the hit tells us the never-ending saga next on Professor of Rock.

It’s time for another edition of our series Bottled Lightening where we celebrate a song that was king for a day or for many days. We honor artists and bands and that one glorious hit they had that rocketed up the charts…and for reasons unknown didn’t have another hit. We all know them for the term one-hit wonder but we try to step beyond that and celebrate them as Lightning in a bottle. Today we go for a ride in the Driver Seat with Sniff 'n' the Tears .. the #15 US billboard hit from 1979 with original lead singer and songwriter Paul Roberts. Roberts is also a gifted painter.
This was a perfect song for its time with a cool acoustic guitar opening that turned into a 70s-like AOR guitar attack with a dollop of sleek MOG synthesizer that was driving toward the future with irresistible background vocals and lyrics that were more than meets the eye. This was a song that stopped me dead in my tracks the first time I heard it. It’s one of the best Bottled Lightening tunes of the late 70s.
I caught up with singer-songwriter Paul Roberts about the song and he gave us some amazing insight including where the heck the band name sniffin the tears came from.
Leave us a comment about Driver’s Seat by Sniff 'n' the Tears A bottled lightening classic . What are your memories of this song? What do you think of it? Let us know in the comments below.

One of the most amazing things about this song is how the drummer kept up that beat throughout the entire song using a very basic kit.

That 4 on the floor beat has been used in quite a few hit songs. It maintains a rock steady tempo but always seems as if it's driving forward. I also like the guitar riffs that sound like an old muscle car shifting gears. That beat is only difficult for drummers only because we love fills...lmaooouuut. No fills required in this song. It's a great tune loved it in boogie nights.

First time I heard it was around 98 and my dad had just bought a new jeep wrangler. The jeep also had a custom speaker system that was incredibly loud. My parents enjoyed taking my brother and I to beach that was two hours away. It was normal for my parents to just load us up on weekends and go drive somewhere and the only thing that cost them anything was food, gas and admission to park and staying at a campsite. It was late in the evening and my dad put on a random 80s music cd and this was the fourth or fifth track. I remember it fondly because we were headed back home and as the ocean waves came beating into the shore and the sun began to fall into the other side of the world, this track came on. It felt like the coolest moment in the world and one I never forgot. Great track and timeless.

'79 was my 18th year; just starting out in life with a job and a car and too much testosterone. No obligations other than keeping up with food, rent and gas. Saturday nights were reserved for whatever hedonistic fun I could find. I was a 9th grader in 79...back when there was no internet and FM stereo was where one listened to whatever new music was breaking. There were 3 primary rock FM radio stations that I would listen to. WCCC in Hartford, CT, WHCN in Hartford and WAQY in Springfield MA. So as my friends and I would be cruising around in the car, we would quickly turn the dial, scanning those 3 stations to see if anything cool was playing...and Driver's Seat was one of those songs with such an incredible hook that if you hit that song while scanning the dial, it'd be an immediate, "LEAVE IT THERE!". Indeed, an outstanding song!

@mbgrafix - Hey, Mike - I grew up in NW CT and was also a freshman in high school in ‘79 and listened to those stations, too, along with I95 in Brookfield and WPLR in New Haven. I was in Springfield at that time myself, senior year of high school (Classical, while it still existed) so those ALONG with 'AAF / Worcester & later, 'PLR were my go-to album rock stations (talked to Lich a FEW times) with 'COZ over 'BCN around Boston at college (BRIEFLY) - correct me if I'm wrong but, didn't 'HCN do a CROSS-promotion with the WHALERS of some sort where a related cartoon image appeared as part of their marketing as WELL? It's admittedly VAGUE now - ANOTHER track I'll NOT soon forget from then: Ian Gomm's "Hold On".....

I am so glad you did this interview. "Driver's Seat" is my absolute FAVORITE song of all time! Paul's plaintive voice, the acoustic intro, the driving drum beat, the brief but exquisite guitar solo, and that brilliant keyboard at the end...for me, it's the perfect rock song.

It's my favorite song of 1979. The video is great. What's funny about the video is that the backup singer steals the show. This was a great song to have on the radio when driving with your buddies. A fantastic road song.

I too was one of those "A little driving on a Saturday night. So come what may, couple dollars for gettin' away!" that's how I, a motorcyclist heard it. No car I rode daily starting in Nov 78. Its indelibly etched on my early adult life. I had the album, which was important because the guitar send off is edited short on 45's and many compilations.
