Two elderly Latin Men's 1993 tune, gets a remix, an English translation, Radio airplay, and becomes a Dance sensation, a WORLDWIDE Smash, sells MILLIONS of singles, & becomes the ONLY Song, to have the longest climb to #1 (33 weeks, in 1996)! ...and, THEY DON'T CARE! ....ha-HAAA!! ....Talk about, 'lightning in a Bottle'!

Hi Grace! I’m an American and was born in the 80s so did not experience Eurogliders when the music was new. However, I discovered the albums in the 2000s and instantly loved them. It’s some of my favorite music from the 80s. Please know that the music continues to bring joy and make an impression!

Zebra, the only metal band I can think of that hailed from New Orleans. I have that Vandenberg album. “Fantasy” is a great highway driving song. “Under The Milky Way” was so melancholy & reminds me of so many What Ifs. And Quarterflash! So underrated, Loved Black Sabbath, Iron Maiden, Judas Priest, The Who, & so much more in the 70s that evolved out of what they started in the 60s, but skated to 70s R&B & was totally enthralled with 80s metal & new wave. Aging is cruel on one’s body, but I can still remember the escapades of a misspent youth.

Indeed it is! One of my absolute favorites from that era. I have it in 1st press vinyl…still in immaculate condition, and it sounds incredible! The instrumental separation in that high quality master really makes the song pop. SO glad I held on to it for the last 39 years.

Yes 100%. I had forgotten what an amazing song driver's seat was until I heard it again in boogie nights! It is always in my mix of favorite songs to play loudly when I'm home alone!

I met the Eurogliders back in 84. My parents owned a small motel in Dubbo (country NSW Australia). The band were staying there on tour. They were such friendly and down to earth people (especially Bernie Lynch). They took me, an impressionable 15 year old, to the gig and I got to watch back stage. Awesome. Changed my life. That was it. I had to work in the music industry. I’ve always loved Heaven. Takes me right back.

They were at least a 2 hit wonder in the US because "Crazy" from the same album (Man of Colours) was also successful. Me, I became their fan through "No Promises" from the album before that one (Measure for Measure). It sounded like singer Iva Davies was dialed hard into his David Bowie impression, and I was there for it.

Don't forget ICEHOUSE were formally known as The Flowers look up their songs like The Wall. Iva Davies lead singer became an Aussie musical genius.

Honeymoon Suite had so many great songs on their _The Big Prize_ album! * _What does it take?_ * _Once The Feeling_ * _Take My Hand_ * _Bad Attitude_ If you love Honeymoon Suite I would also highly recommend checking out Glass Tiger’s album _Air Time: Best of Glass Tiger._

Saga “On the Loose” in my early MTV exposure. I never heard such an explosive rock song. Featuring a solo stand off between lead guitar and fast pace keyboards. This song seems lost in the ether, but not in my rock ‘n’ roll heart

Some of my personal faves with '80s one hit wonders (in addition to the great top 5 mentioned by POR) include: "Let's Go All the Way" by Sly Fox, "Fascinated" by Company B, "So Alive" by Love & Rockets, "Shattered Dreams" by Johnny Hates Jazz, "Rumors" by Timex Social Club, a different song called "Cry" by Waterfront, "The Rain" by Oran "Juice" Jones, and the "Lean On Me" remake by Club Nouveau.

Beats So Lonely by Charlie Sexton is clearly the best hidden gem on this list. I'm amazed Charlie didn't have a more significant career. It's like he peeked at 17, but has grinded out a career without ever achieving the superstardom that many thought he would. I was curious why Beats So Lonely was not on Some Kind of Wonderful's Soundtrack even though it was featured so prominently in the movie.

I agree, he should have been more successful. But as he mentioned in the video he performed as part of The Arc Angel's for quite some time. They recently reunited and performed about two months ago . He also has a brother Will who is a talented musician. I've never met Charlie but I met Will many years ago. Super sweet guy.

it was embarrassingly ridiculous how much I liked 'Waiting For a Star to Fall' back in the day. Totally not my normal wheelhouse but my work days meant lots of small town driving around at that time, company vehicle only had a radio and that song would always make my day... nobody knew anything about it except me and the radio! hahahaha

Probably one of my favorite passed over artists of the 80's was Swing Out Sister. Breakout was a great song, but they had so many great songs. I was always surprised that they weren't more popular in the US.

Very underrated band. Their follow up album, a tribute to Burt Bacharach, is incredible though not a commercial hit. Swingout Sister is a hidden gem.

I must admit to a giggle when you brought up Eurogliders - down here in Australia, we haven't forgotten them.They're still touring, and Grace is still an amazing performer and vocalist (and Bernie's no slouch either). Also, Godley and Creme's 'Cry' is one of my favourite songs of all time - great song, fantastic video.

I nominate “Shelter” by Lone Justice for a fantastic Bottled Lightning tune. The music both shimmers and jangles with pulsating energy, while Maria McKee belts out her powerful yet sensitive vocals. “Shelter” has remained one of my favourite songs ever since I first heard LJ play it while opening for U2 at the Hartford Civic Center in 1985.

Glad to see "I'm Not In Love" and "Cry" getting the recognition for their composition and artistic brilliance. I get choked-up listening to either, discovering they are from the same composer(s) fills me with awe of their talent, and saddened there aren't more like these from them.

"Beats So Lonely" is such a fantastic song! I bought that album when it came out and it was so great, I couldn't understand why Charlie didn't have more success off that album. Hey Professor, here are some of my best "Bottled Lightning" songs of the 80's: "When I'm With You" by Sheriff (1989), "Never Ending Story" by Limahl (1985), "Funkytown" by Lipps Inc. (1980--from the very first album I bought), "Tainted Love" by Soft Cell (1982), and "Let's Go All The Way" by Sly Fox (1986).

There was another bottled lightning hit by a group called Real Life called "Send Me An Angel " which was a minor hit in 1983-1984 but was remixed five years later and became a bigger hit in 1989. There's also the yacht rock classics "Steal Away" by Robbie Dupree and "Key Largo" by Bertie Higgins, the dance singles "Baby Love" by Regina, "Catch Me I'm Falling" by Pretty Poison, and "Right On Track" by the Breakfast Club, and the hip-hop classic "Jam On It" by Newcleus.

I do remember these tunes. Sad to say, they were buried deep in my memory. The one that had the biggest impact was Giuffria. I had a friend that was also a DJ at the college radio station. He turned me on to so many new bands with new sounds. Giuffria was just one of the bands. He and I were looked at in highschool as rock and roll nerds. We went to all kinds of concerts. From Boston to Iron Maiden with Poison and Sammy Hagar in the mix. So Giuffria fit right in. Thanks for bringing back some forgotten gems!

I guess it depends which part of the world you live, but I would never consider Split Enz a one hit wonder, but absolutely a hidden gem. Neil Finn is one of the most underrated singers/songwriters ever.

Nowhere Girl by B-Movie. That song is one of those songs that when you listen to it, sounds like the very musical transition from late 1970s punk rock to early 1980s new wave synthpop. It just pops up that image in your head and you feel it in your heart. You can even tell how it was going to then evolve into darkwave and goth music later.

My 5 would include: Lunatic Fringe (love that song), Relax (I have a "Frankie Says Relax" t-shirt), Angel Eyes (Always thought SNL would do a cover being played by an unseen clown until the very end), Voices Carry and Toy Soldiers as the ladies voices are so strong and emotional.

Nice to see the shout out for the Eurogliders. I first saw them as a support act for INXS when they were virtual unknowns. When they played "Heaven", it just stood out as an instant classic. It was a big hit here in Australia. Another great Aussie new wave hidden gem was Real Life - Send me An Angel kzfaq.info/get/bejne/nt2WeNWKutXVqGw.html There were some great Aussie/NZ bands in the 1980's who "should've done better" in America. I don't know if it was record label executives here or there, but many people were asleep.. Men At Work, INXS, Rick Springfield and Midnight Oil had success and The Church found an alternative niche on college radio. But there were many great bands... Cold Chisel, The Angels, Split Enz, Divinyls, Mental As Anything, Icehouse, John Farnham, Australian Crawl, Mondo Rock, Hoodoo Gurus, The Saints, Rose Tattoo, Hunter's & Collectors, Paul Kelly, Go-Betweens, Triffids, Models, Real Life, Machinations, Kids in the Kitchen

I'm a man of a certain age (51) and have never let go of the 80's - the period of my youth where music started to infuse into my soul and make a huge impact. I can't tell you how much I love your deep-dives into 70's and 80's music - I always come away feeling completely mentally and musically nourished. Thank you. Also....at the age of 15 I went to my very first live music concert. That concert was the Eurogliders. They were the sound of my youth, of that era here in Australia. Dear Professor Adam: I am subscribed and love these type of videos! *THIS ONE* is now my all-time fave (unless you do one of the 7 tracks I'll list)! I was working at an IL based record store chain called J.R.'s Music Shop in 84/85 when both Giuffria and The Eurogliders came out: I loved both! In fact, "This Island" by Eurogliders is in my Top 25 albums of ALL-TIME! I saw & met them on tour on 2/14/85 in Chicago!

I'm with you about the camera phones, I don't think I've got a single photograph from that tour in '85.....if it was today I'd have a million photos and hours of video. I'm interested that you have us in Chicago in February, my memory might be playing tricks but I thought we were in the US in April/May that year.....I'm imagining it would be very cold in Feb and I don't remember it like that? I didn't know that the Divinyls covered "I ain't gonna eat out my heart anymore"?! Because of Godley & Creme's "Cry": I love the version used in the Miami Vice episode "Definitely Miami". It begins like "I'm not in love", but it's actually "Cry". :) And as you were talking about "Some kind of wonderful".... I think that it's a song that you would definitely categorize as "Bottled Lightning," and if you haven't featured it on your channel before, then I hope that you'll check it out. It's not just one of my top 10 favorites from the 80s, but I think that it's one of the best songs that I've heard since I popped into the world 59 years and 2 months ago.

I saw the Eurogliders lots of times in the early 80's - great band live and as well as having a great voice Grace was really pretty. So many great Aussie bands in those years. Thursday, Friday and Saturday nights then were often a battle to choose what band to see.

What a era! Living in Sydney we had the same problem. So many venues, so many quality acts, too much choice. None of us realised how good we had it at the time. When I go past one of the dozens of pubs we went to see bands then today I always flashback to those years & feel glad that I was part of something special

One of the first albums I bought was True Colours by the Split Enz. Solely for the single ‘I Got You’, it was the first album with ‘laser-etching’- how high tech! I also liked quirky Tracy Ullman’s ‘They Don’t Know’ with the added bonus of Paul McCartney in the video!

Great stuff prof! Perhaps you should consider a series on the "greatest bands that never were". Meaning they were damn good but never made it. For example, a great, yet obscure 80s hair band Kix. Crunchy riffs, heavy bass, rich sound, and a front man with the moves-- but never got their due.

Great list! You brought back a few I had forgotten and one I don't remember hearing at all. I agree with your opinion of the descriptor "One Hit Wonder" because it seems to emphasize commercial success more than song quality. I remember watching VH-1 specials about One Hit Wonders and thinking that couldn't be right because I had that album or cassette and there were several great songs on it, or even other albums. I still remember thinking that about Ratt when they mentioned "Round and Round" as their only hit and remembering heavy rotation of "Lay It Down" and "Way Cool Jr" on MTV.

I love these songs! Especially Beat So Lonely and Heaven. Some Kind of Wonderful was my favorite John Hughes movie and was filmed a town over from mine. There are a few of these songs that I never hear (except when I remember to put them on a playlist) and they are so catchy I just don't understand why they aren't played more. Two more of mine are Escalator of Life and Christian Boy. So good!!

I watched a few top tens of '85/86...I very much appreciate your homage to American Top 40...I'm slightly younger, I think, born '73, and incredibly Gen X...I watched a few but hadn't subscribed until this video. One of my favorite forgotten "One-Hit Wonders" of the 80s was released in 1982... a tune called "Goin' Down" by Greg Guidry... peaked at #17 on the Billboard Hot 100, and #11 on the Billboard Adult Contemporary chart.

I’m a young person who admires music, mainly stuff from the 70s and 80s. I especially like finding lesser known songs and artists from those two decades so I love your Hidden Gems videos. I appreciate you adding Giuffria to this list! Plus I discovered some others that I hadn’t heard before. They are going onto one of my playlists! A couple of mentions for future videos include a few by some of my favorite bands: “Hold On To 18” by Black ‘N Blue, “When I’m With You” by Sheriff, and some early 90’s stuff: “More Than Words Can Say” by Alias (and I also love “Waiting For Love” by Alias).

OMG CRY !!!! This song and video was absolutely AWESOME!!! That video was the FIRST time we ever seen anything like that! I'm SO Glad U mentioned Cry being featured in Miami Vice! 1 of the GREATEST tv shows of all time and It was NOT just featured in ANY episode. It was featured in arguably the BEST episode of the entire Miami Vice series and the song was SO fitting for that episode called: DEFINITELY MIAMI ! I feel like EVER father should sit down with his young son and watch this Miami Vice episode and use it as a teachable moment! Thanks for the memories my man ! 😎

Someday, Someway should have been a hit but sadly never peaked beyond #34 on the charts. I could never figure out why Marshall Crenshaw just disappeared into the oblivion..great song!

I was always a big fan of the debut album by Australians The Other Ones that included hit Holiday, but the whole album has some infectious melodies.

Adam, you are spot on with Cry. I loved this song so much. I never owned it,and rarely ever heard it outside of MTV, but I’ve found myself humming or singing a verse even to this day. There is just something so primal in the ache in the way it is sung. Really hits you, and it is a shame this didn’t get more play than it did.
