Even though Kirsten Dunst is actually a blonde woman in real life, she looks so beautiful as Mary Jane Watson with red hair. I love redheads forever. Have had a bit of a thing for Kirsten since I first saw Jumanji and small soldiers 😁 she was that girl who was older than I (I'm born 1992) and who probably set my standard for preferring older women that I got today LOL. She's the best girl for the role of MJ and these Spiderman movies are far superior than any other remake and I won't be told any different. I just don't respect the lack of originality Hollywood has today, remakes more often than not just show the laziness and lack of creative thought in writers and screencasters

For those of you who hate MJ for being a screaming damsel in distress in the trilogy, believe it or not it's actually her original characterization. Back in the 60's and 70's MJ was always being kidnapped by villains and screaming. In fact, in one comic, Spiderman saved her from a dinosaur that would've fallen on her and he told her to quit screaming because she sounded like "a blasted air raid siren." It wasn't until the 80's when she became the badass in the comics that we're familiar with. They probably did that because she was officially his girlfriend and later his wife so they tried to idealize her and make her as humanly badass as possible in order to make her look worthy of being Mrs. Spiderman.

@@ovs4744 I wouldn't say it was pandering to the girlboss trope necessarily given that MJ had nearly two decades of character development and it seemed to be the natural progression of her character now that she was married to Spiderman so she had to be able to handle dangerous situations. You can be human and still be a badass human, just ask Batman. I still wish they developed her into a person who can defend herself while not overshadowing Peter.

In the Raimiverse, Peter knew Mary Jane since the age of 6 whereas in the comics, Peter never knew MJ until he was already in college. His Aunt May and her Aunt Anna arranged a surprise date for the two of them then he opened the door and there she was revealed for the first time. Her comic debut was Amazing Spiderman issue 42 released in 1966. 4+2=6. She was the same age as him. Two 6's. 66. 1966. The year MJ debuted in the comics.

While she is based on a character from a comic book, her relationship with Peter seemed like it was more or less inspired by Jenny and Forrest from Forrest Gump more than the comics in how the movies heavily emphasized her daddy issues and how her father abused her (as opposed the comics). Peter also thought she was an angel when he first saw her at the age of six just like how Forrest thought Jenny was an angel when he first saw her on the bus at the age of seven. In fact, the opening bus scene in Spiderman (2002) where no one lets Peter sit with them is just like when little Forrest was on the bus and no one would let him sit with them. Mary Jane was the only one that showed compassion to him by having the bus driver stop the bus for him just like how Jenny let Forrest sit next to her on the bus. Cinematographer Don Burgess worked on both Forrest Gump and Spiderman so I wouldn't be surprised if Raimi took inspiration from Forrest Gump.

If you think about it, the fact that Mary Jane came from a broken home means she had the potential to become a villain. If Sam Raimi did his version of Carnage, Cletus Kasady could have been a dark reflection of Mary Jane: a redhead who came from a dysfunctional family, has daddy issues, and struggles with love. However since Mary Jane had Peter as her best friend, inspiring her to be herself she did not become a sadistic sociopathic murderer like Cletus Kasady. Kasady would have been what Mary Jane could become if she didn't have Peter in her life just as Eddie Brock was a dark reflection of Peter if he didn't have the moral upbringing of Aunt May and Uncle Ben. Peter was the only person who made her feel like herself but imagine if she didn't have him in her life. Raimi could have made a whole movie where Peter breaks up with MJ and then we would see what happens to her as a result. She would lose her sanity and go so far as to murder her own dad just like how Kasady killed his abusive grandma and his mom's dog.

Remember in Spiderman 1 when Aunt May was in the hospital with Peter and told him about the first time he saw MJ at age 6 he asked Aunt May "Is that an angel?". This quote could have been brought full circle by having Cletus Kasady be the devil to Mary Jane's angel.

@@aaronnantz2289 They probably did have that in mind originally. Maybe Raimi originally wanted MJ to go through a character arc of maybe 3 or 4 films and we would have seen her grow from a little child scared of her father to a brave heroine who fights by the hero's side. Maybe Raimi had this in mind when he initially wrote her character and when she told Peter "Go get them, tiger." at the end of 2, he was going to have her develop more into that character. However, he had to compromise with Sony on Spiderman 3 by having Venom, Gwen Stacy, and Harry getting a redemption arc at the demands of Sony producer, Avi Arad. This made Raimi "not believe in all of the characters" which would include MJ because he had too much to juggle. If Raimi had gotten his way with 3 and didn't have to do what Sony forced him to do, he would have believed in all of the characters and thus maybe MJ would have developed more into a brave heroine like her comic counterpart. That would have been a powerful arc for Mary Jane.

She is her own agent and is not merely created to make the protagonist look good. Other heroines like Gwen or MJ in MCU Spiderman falls into this trap.

Peter himself practically lead Mary Jane on by not only giving her mixed signals every time he attempted to reconcile with her, but also developed a big ego when he became more famous, causing him to not only disrespect her by kissing another woman in public right in front of her and the press, but also ignored her feelings of self-doubt and worthlessness when she lost her acting career. These things occurred *before* Peter became Venom, so if anything, *PETER* was the one being “toxic” for failing to be there for MJ and not communicate his feelings properly like he did with Aunt May! 😤 It didn’t help that Harry constantly interfered with their relationship and even manipulated Mary Jane into breaking up with Peter by threatening to *murder* him if she didn’t. Bitch-ass Harry was an even worse character, yet somehow, he gets away with it while everyone else hounds on MJ for her mistakes. Such hypocrisy. 🙄

It could be worse, she could actually murder people like Arthur Fleck in Joker or Anakin Skywalker in Star Wars. All three of these characters came from a broken home and felt unseen by the rest of the world yet when people discuss these characters, they talk about her almost as if she was actually a villain. The other two were actually villains who murdered people while she never killed anyone.

Also him kissing someone else in the third movie was his fault cant blame mj for being mad at him for that. But yea harry was a screw up i get he felt upset about losing his dad but he never knew about him being the green goblin till kater on. Honestly, I think Peter should have just quit his superhero career in Spider-Man 3 and just married MJ. it would have been a lot easier. zendaya’s mj is so bland tho … yea kirsten wasn’t the best mj but she has character to her .. her storyline of having and abusive parent who brought her down her entire life and makes her date men who are rich / wealthy gives her character and shows how it’s affected her life while with zendaya’s we get no backstory like that .

Yea spiderman 3 could have been better if they didnt force venom into it they should have waited to put venom in. Im glad they have tom hardy to play venom now

For me, it was greatttt, better than meaningless homecoming movies or new joker venom movies or nowayhome where they just throw old characters in rushed way to get more views from fans of different movies, At least Spiderman 3 had logical events and progress of characters and adress mature audience more than a venom that makes jokes or eat chickens to be cute to kids. Spider-Man 3 will be my favourite always
