Thanks for taking the time to post review, but completly disagree re the sole. Lugs could do with a mm more depth, plus not grippy on wet rock at all, or mud, and lasts for about 2 months before it wears badly. They should swap to a vibram sole. I've had all the lone peaks since 3.5 but have now swapped to Topo pursuits. They dont have a rock plate but still handle sharp stone much better than the lone peaks.

I’ll stick to Altras with a Vibram sole. Why they don’t put it on shoe models other than the Olympus is a money thing or otherwise a mystery.

Honestly, I don't know either. I am sure it has something to do with this being a heritage shoe and not wanting to change it too much but that to me seems like an upgrade that no one would be bummed about.

As you are speaking to the updates of the LP7. You should note that the MaxTrac outsole compound has been updated. Also I got mine a week ago and the tongue and collar are a lot more padded than the LP6.

The LP is basically the best all round trail shoe - in terms of both comfort and performance in most conditions. These look very different from the last one I had - the 5.

Haha yeah, here in the PNW (WA state, US) it rains… a lot. Maxtrac isn’t bad with mechanical traction like soft mud and dirt, but slippery wet rocks, roots, wood bridges, etc, I always reach for something with Vibram if I’m expecting a lot of it. Maybe these will be better.

At some point in my older age, I progressed to cushier shoes. The Torin on the road, and the Timp and Olympus on trail. I’m always tempted to try the Lone Peak again, cause that’s what I started running trails in. But even with the stone guard, I feel every root and stone underfoot. Might just be me cause I see these at every trail race of any distance.

Nothing wrong with that at all. If I am going to a rockier and rooty trail, I prefer something with a little more cushion to it as well. I see a pretty equal split of customers that want to feel every pebble they run on to people that want to protect their feet. Unless I am doing a fast trail run, I will take more cushion over less.

I actually like 6 much better for the look and in general and they did we on my 140km walk here in Scotland. No problems so far. 7 dont look that great and seem a bit boring more like a normal plain nike shoes.

Another full and comprehensive shoe review, Steve. Nice. And a Happy New Year 🎉 The outsole looks to be some good alterations but I do question the drainage now, any feedback on that? I live in a very wet area and the 5SE and 6 do a good job off shifting water. On seeing the 7 I am very inclined to stock my next shoe as an “on sale” LP6 or even a 5SE if around.

So far I have not had anyone come back with issues with the lack of drainage on the LP7. I was skeptical when I saw they were removed but I have not heard anything (good or bad) about that particular update. I will note, I had several people return Timp 4's because the drainage on those seemed to bring more water in than let out. I do not know if the removal of the drainage spots was at all based on that type of feedback on other models.

My problem with Altras is that fall apart so quickly. Keep hearing promises that "new" or current version is better, but doesn't seem to be the case. Very disappointing for a high priced shoe. If Altra truly believes in their quality, offer at least a 30 day or 200 mile money back guarantee.

They do have 30 day and customer service if the shoe fails prematurely. Make sure you’re in the right size though too… lots of people with actual wide feet use altras and the shoes aren’t wide (unless you actually buy the wide version of the lone peak or Torin).

@@Neatguyjake that's great, I didn't know they did that, not that I would have done while on the PCT last year. I switched to NB more trail, 2E and they lasted 600 miles and many thru hikers also liked the Hokas. I know many who kept with the Altras- I also like the wide toe area, just wish they would have lasted longer.

I've been a big fan of the lone peak series. I wear the 6s and 5s, and they are my favorites on trails. The design of the 7s look very generic and bland to me compared to the 6s/5s. Past versions were more edgier and unique. I'm sure the form and function will still be outstanding even though the look blends in with other brands now.

The colors on the new LP 7's has been a real talking point. I like the green/purple one but I also have no sense of fashion and look at shoes as equipment. I have run in some truly horrid-looking shoes over the years and as long as I am injury free (and hopefully fastish) in them, I don't sweat it. There are plenty of people that wear these with jeans or out and about when they retire them though so I totally get it. Especially at $150 it would be nice to have some more options.

I wore a Lone Peak 6 for about 100 miles before returning it and going with a Terraventure 3. Everything they changed seems to be to make it more like a Terraventure, except $20 more and with an inferior sole. And anyone that says the lack of Vibram doesn't matter really needs to try a Vibram sole. It's a noticeable difference.

One of the several things I love about Lone Peaks is the lack of structure/rigidity in the heel. We'll see. Fingers crossed

I had the Lone peak 5 in 2021 on the John Muir Trail and got HORRIBLE stone bruises.I had never talked to anyone who disliked the lone peak and most of the rangers I ran into were wearing them, but man, my feet were in so much pain. In 2022 I opted for a hoka speed goat instead, those were too narrow in the foot box and wound up with a million blisters but no stone bruises lol. Thinking I may try the olympus or timp for next summer's trip.

Try different years, I found the Lone Peak 6 to fit my feet substantially better than the 5, wider in the forefoot and toe box and tighter in the heel.

Yeah, everyone has different feet. I backpacked the Rae Lake Loop and some side trails (about 65 miles total) in the LP4 and had no issues with protection. Also wore them in Colo and the AT, been happy with them except for how fast they wear.

Knowing the 7 was coming, I was able to get a couple pairs of 6 for a good price. Each version of Lone Peak seems to be hit or miss. 3 was my first and was great (still have 1 new pair), 4 and 4.5 sucked, 5 started to get back to the feel of the 3 and 6 finally had the same feel. So I really hope that Altra does not mess up the Lone Peak 7 like they did when they introduced the 4 and 4.5.

Fit is so personal - I couldn't stand the 3.0 and 3.5 and much preferred the 4.0 and 4.5! %.0 I couldn't get on with and 6.0 was OK. In a way then it's good they switch things up - at least some of us will be happy some of the time!

Strange, 4.5's were my favorite by a mile. I still wear them as my every day shoe and I keep hoping they will bring that fit back at some point. Snaps in, hugs the midfoot but the toes are wide open, it was perfect, you can wear them without laces

Hey Stéphane, The Velcro on the back of the heel is for a "gaiter". Something that helps keep all the unwanted elements from sneaking their way into your shoes.

Max trac is borderline dangerous on wet rocks, logs, etc. If it’s rained/raining or I know I’m crossing creeks, im not wearing the LPs. Love em, just not adequate on wet terrain.

Nice to see a bit of structure on the heal of the shoe. I find i pronate a lot in the LP5 which I don't get in the more stable Olympus which have now become my go to shoe for almost everything off road. But I would like to reduce the stack height a bit so i'm hoping a LP7 will work for me.

It's a subtle but nice change. It reminds me of the Provision 7 with the stability. It's not going to bug you if you don't need it but it will give just enough for those who do. It at least opens the door to people who want to try a low-stack height trail shoe but were timid without having a stable option.

How do the 7’s drain vs the 6’s? For Obstacle Course Racing, good drainage is needed. The 5’s were terrible with drainage, but the 6’s are amazing! I’m curious about the 7’s since that basically determines if they’ll work out for OCR.

I don't know yet. I did not get to take a pair through the streams yet to say for certain. The Altra team thinks it will but until I get a real chance in my pair (not a borrowed demo set) I can't say for sure. I will circle back as soon as possible though.

Definitely agree on the stack height for trail running. I actually retired some black LP 5's that I use for house shoes. They're terrific. Steve, other than the heel, you mentioned a better fit at the very end. Any change to how the fit runs? Not in love with the coloring on these.

No, the LP will be wider and longer than the Timp. The Timp is a slim fit vs the LP which is an original fit. We also have found the Timp is a good half-size sorter than the LP. Thanks for watching.

I have noticed that there are questions about the water drainage of this LP7 , may I suggest the simple way to test it ? Just wear them and step in the water basket stand in there for a while then walk out and see how long will they drain …..

I had the lone peak 5 all weather. I did like the fit a lot. But was hardly water resistant and also started falling apart and got a small hole on the side after only 4 months normal use. Really not happy with the build quality , so not sure how the 7’s will stack up

The LP 6 is the best shoe I have ever worn for my feet. I am really nervous about the changes. The 7 looks cheap to me, and I hate the idea of a heel stabiizer. I always went that route before, and guess what? It made things worse for me. Letting my feet go where they want fixed my feet and low back, and I'm running for the first time in my life. I think I'm going to grab another pair of 6's and skip the 7's.

The Lone Peak 6 is certainly an amazing shoe. I personally own a couple pairs and they have always done very well for me personally. As for the Lone Peak 7, the look has certainly changed a bit, but the feel is very similar and I wouldn't say they are any more or less premium than the previous version. The fit of the Lone Peak 7 is almost identical to the fit of version 6, and the added heel stability is very mild. The shoe is still considered neutral and certainly feels very similar to the Lone Peak 6. Whether you decide to try a 7, or stick with version 6, we wish you the very best in your trail endeavors!

Bro, my dad is old and his shoes rub sores on his pinky’s and I have to tape up his feet. What altras would you recommend for old man. Not that active but sore pinky’s.

Probably the LP actually. I know it's weird thinking of a trail shoe for an everyday shoe but I think the width is the best, it's versatile and the extra traction might not be a bad thing for someone older walking around. Plus, it comes in a wide option if he needs even more width around his toes.

I’m hoping the drain holes on the previous versions were just placebo. Do you think the bonded toe caps provide as much protection from toe stubs on those mysterious jumping rocks? Seems a little thin. Oo, and the stitching on the toe flap is gone again…hopefully we don’t see the return of peely toes, as the 5 and 6 held up really well for me. Looking forward to getting into this set!

Lp4 had the best drainage this far. 5 was not as great, 6 was okay. They just made drainage better for the last Timp model... the Timp has always had the water stay in my toes, causing blistering and uncomfort. No going to get the LP7, for this very reason. Although the 6 is still a bit too wide and does not stay tight on the foot

The toe protection seems better on version 7. I just did a side-by-side test between versions 6 and 7 and you can feel the upgrade in the toe cap. Thanks for watching!

Main problem for all the trail runners is the sole durability, it seems you have to buy a new one every year and it seems they are getting more expensive every year!!! Totally disappointment as well was the lp 6 waterproof mid shoe for me, the waterproof fabric had a whole just after a few technical hikes with fast decent unacceptable for a such an expensive shoe!! And this applies basically to every shoe brand but Altras with their small lugs are prone to be useless for trails after a year or less…

I'm looking to get my first pair of trail shoes soonish, and these have really cought my eyes. The foot shape is really intriguing for a nice natural feel and perhaps for balance. Would these be a good first pair of trail shoes?

There are no shoes really that you shouldn’t consider just because its your first pair. Try a bunch at a running shoe store and choose the one that fits the best

This is a great trail shoe to give a go. It's not too bulky and the foot-shaped toe box is so luxurious when you first step into it. Plus, this midsole is so soft for a trail shoe.

What happened to the drainage holes? The toes aren't angled upwards like the 6 is, I wonder they changed that?

I love lone peak but still...all altra shoes have the same shoe tongue problem....did they fix the Shoe Tongue from Sliding to the Side??

I actually don't hear that from customers but if you had that problem in version 6, I would image you would in version 7. Same gusseted tongue and general lacing layout. Tad more cushioned tongue but the general upper structure and design is the same.

Would you recommend it for a long walk like Camino di Santiago?

You could get away with the Camino de Santiago in the Lone Peak 7. The Camino de Santiago's most popular route is nearly 500 miles (780 km). If you plan on walking that specific route, you might want two pairs of shoes or a beefier shoe like the Olympus. Usually, shoes are rated for around 300 miles. Being a nearly 500-mile walk, there is a chance the Lone Peak will lose its responsiveness in the middle of the trail. The Olympus 5 is beefier, more cushioned, and more rugged. This will make the Olympus last longer than the Lone Peak while having more cushion for the longer trail. In the end, it's your choice to pick what you wear. Both options can work for the Camino de Santiago; however, the Olympus would be our recommendation.

In the Altra family, there are no other wide options. From the brands that I carry in the shop, none make a 4E. Most do have a lot of models in 2E but none in 4E sadly. Thanks for watching our channel.

I just got a pair of the hi top which I ordered and did not have a chance to try on. Nobody sells them in my town. I ordered half a size larger. For some insane reason, the left shoe is tight on the top part of my foot which sucks!!! I shoved a bunch of balled up socks inside the shoe and that stretched it just a tad but I can still feel pressure on the top of my left foot. The right shoe fits perfectly fine. Any suggestions seeing how I can't refund or exchange them? I have a lot of hikes planned and I really want to hang on to these. Thanks bro!

Sorry to hear the fit is not perfect. If you purchsed from us we would be happy to send you a return label and help you with an exchange or refund. Have you tried adjusting the lacing pattern? I have had success with customers lacing shoes in a boxing method as opposed to a crossing pattern. It helps relieve some top of foot irritation.

With them removing the slits from the front, will this shoe still drain? I have the lone peaks for doing OCRs where the foot gets fully submerged in water. Is there a shoe that would be better suited to this than the lone peak 7? I use altra because of the toe box and the wider fit being standard l.

I have not had any negative feedback on the lack of drainage slits affecting the overall drainage. Now that the shoe has been out for roughly a month and we have shipped and sold in-store a pretty good amount of LP's I would have heard some feedback about this by now. Happy to say I have not heard that it has been a positive or negative change.

LP6 was the best trail shoe I’ve tried…..until my foot stared slipping all over the place on the downhill. My feet might be too narrow for this amazing shoe. Any advice on something similar to LP that doesn’t have the wide toe box?

@@rexgorman9561 thanks for the comment. I did some research and found these on sale. Gonna give them a try! Sounds like a tighter, more secure fit. But still getting what I would want out of the LP. Hoping they work out.

If you wanted to stick to something from Altra, you might want to try the Timp 4. It's zero drop, rugged for the trail, more cushioned than the LP but more narrow. A lot of Altra folks don't like the Timp because it's too snug for them but that could be a good thing for you.

@@RunMoore Be warned: the tread on my Timp 4s wore out in less than 200 miles. Also, they are not nearly as flexible as the LP/Innov8.

They took away space around the toes. Looks like I’ll be going with something else if these ever become an option for me. They did the same thing with the timps. The north face has ruined the altra company.

Another Lone Peak model with the horrible rubble tongue sticking out the back of the shoe? When you walk on the sand that tongue of rubber only serves to raise dust and sand. From this point of view the Lone Peak 3.5 was better
