Plus, Showcases themselves hardly seem exciting.) • Is coddled by the writing • Doesn't have her flaws played around with or addressed in order to develop her character (case in point: She's stated to be a lazy girl by her mother, who would expectedly know how Serena is really like, but this is never shown to us at any point. Disliking Rhyhorn Racing is also supposed to be a core point of her character, but she strangely has no issues riding Rhyhorns when the situation calls for it, or problems wanting to teach Ash, Clemont, or Bonnie, how to ride one, and didn't even bother to research whether Pokémon Showcases had any Rhyhorn-related activities in them or not) • Her most crippling flaw (read: her overdepence on Ash) is treated as crucial to her character • Doesn't seem to love Ash despite her affections • Doesn't develop • Is used for fanservice too often (on that note, sexualization is not the only kind of fanservice) • Basically says that she wants to marry Ash when she parts ways with him, despite being 10 years old and thus nowhere near old enough to worry about that • Characterization is too different from the Serena in the source material (read: the games), and it's to the point where Serena might as well be a different character entirely rather than an adaptation of the one from the source material (read: the games) • Due to Serena being an adaptation of a character of the same name from the source material (read: the games), she's a bastardization of said character

Yeah pretty much. It's not 100% of the time, VA's have and do still get replaced in Japan's side of the industry, and in the case of women I have seen like temporary understudies take over in the event of a pregnancy, (funny enough it was for Pikachu's va but in her role as Cbopper in One Piece). But I think for long running series and roles like Pokemon and May, pretty much the only thing that would cause a permenant replacement is death itself.

Serena didn't love Ash. She loved a shadow and a thought of Ash. There's a difference.

She doesn't know how to react, especially since she's had it so easy, had never been in his shoes, and had never seen Ash's weak points. However, despite this, she doesn't try to comfort him. She doesn't try to understand what he's going through. What she does instead is throw snowballs at him because she wants "the real Ash back" so badly. Despite what she says, she doesn't know "the real Ash" at all. And the Ash that she's come to "know" is a fake mental image she's created in her head, and because of that mental image, she's always expecting Ash to act how she sees him acting, even though people generally don't act like how she sees Ash. She expects him to ALWAYS be confident, ALWAYS be independent, ALWAYS be a strong leader 24/7--365 days. And she only got mad at Ash because he was breaking this mental image of him that she has in her head. That's very selfish and manipulative of her, especially since people generally don't act that way. This behavior of her's is never called out, and she’s framed as in the right, with Ash even thanking her for it. If Serena's unwilling to see that Ash has problems of his own, then she's unwilling to make a relationship with him work out. And if she only wants the version of Ash she admires so much to always be by her side, then she doesn't deserve any version of Ash at all.

The XY anime was "Shounen-esque" because that's what its fans wanted it to be, despite the fact that it was alienating the target audience, leading to the sharp decline in ratings. And it doesn't help that Shounen tends to drop the ball when it comes to writing female characters. (Case in point: Asuna Yuuki from Sword Art Online. In fact, most female characters if not every female character in Sword Art Online counts.) And her wanting to become a Pokémon Performer ended up making her another Coordinator when we've already had 2. It doesn't really make sense for her, considering that she was trying to get away from Rhyhorn Racing, some elements of which are in Pokémon Showcases. And she doesn't seem to be very good at Pokémon Performing, either. Plus, it doesn't let Serena come out of her shell, given how tailored for her they are. She should have been a Sky Trainer or something.
