Horizons has been amazing since the start. And as you said, about the secret sauce, it has made the series even more beautiful. I am loving this series so much and I would like to watch more of Liko, Roy and Dot, even after their chase for Laqua concludes. They feel so realistic and relatable.

I personally disagree when he says that the new villains are lacking. Something I disliked about team rocket is that they had no reason to follow ash for several years other than “That twerp has a pretty strong pikachu! Let’s grab it for the boss!” It always bothered me that they were so dumb. A little dumb comedy relief is great now and then, but I love that the new villains (aside from Coral) have more than five brain cells. I love the genius schemes of Spinelle, where he spends time preparing and observing the enemy. I love the headstrong actions of Amethio and the way he and Friede can never quite finish a fight. I love when the tactics the enemy uses isn’t the same pit trap 29 times in a row before finally realizing it doesn’t work. While I’m sad that team rocket has blasted off for the final time, I love the methods and motivations behind every villain. Wouldn’t trade them back if I were given the chance.

Horizons is trash

Liko is a breath of fresh air, we get to see her find her ambitions and what she wants to do. She acts like a 10 year old and we see her overcome her anxiety as she becomes friends with dot and roy, she isnt over the moon about battling, but she doesnt hate it either. Shes a good character with a lot of future potential, and i love seeing her build bonds with her pokemon.

Most likely a hot take(and a Long worded thread), but …HZ has been peak even before Terastal Debut, and part of what made it so good Was its deviation from the games. In contrast to JN, which couldn’t make up its mind on whether it wanted to be a Go anime, silly little misadventures, Ash’s big finale, or the SwSh anime, and clumsily tried to fit them all into one package. HZ takes the concept JN had in mind with traveling the world, and making it Good. Clear focus, an actual Story, even character development, and actually making things Plot relevant, HZ is what I would describe as JN but good And unfortunately for me, the magic of seeing game representation in the anime has Kinda been lost. XYZ took the Team Flare stuff from X and Y, and Ramped it up to eleven, by actually making Zygarde Meaningful to Kalos. Sun and Moon’s reinventions, while Kinda mixed(Lusamine) helped spice the anime, that they made their own take on stuff like Mother Beast, and even had XY level stakes and spectacle with Necrozma and Guzzlord. Other entries like JN are just copy and pastes of the game’s script, and BW basically ruined the plot of the games by reducing Ghetsis to “The white dragon will be mine”. On top of liking it when the anime takes its own liberties like Ash-Greninja or the Crystal Onix And finally, I’ve always been under the impression of “Writing >>> Feats” when it came to judging characters(I don’t care about how pathetic Goodra was in the Kalos league, it had an Amazing arc). And I feel that’s what makes me enjoy Liko so much more than Ash. Ash isn’t bad by any means, but Liko and Dot have FANTASTIC writing, and I feel it would be dumb to make them what are essentially copies of the guy they Just retired(That, and genre context. Ash was made for the tournaments, while Liko’s unraveling a larger mystery)

In Dot's battle, I thought it wasn't that bad & it made sense how the battle played out: most of Dot's team took damage from only Sandstorm, Rock Smash, Brick Break, & Rock Slide (1st half of those moves do deal too much damage) & with Bellibolt kind of a tank, it made sense it was able to tough through & use Quaxly-charged Zap Cannon to Copperajah, Who Was the main one of Poppy's pokemon that kept taking all the damage (albeit overall it was mainly Iono's win than Dot's). For Roy's battle, it really was one-sided as most of it ended up with him powering up Baxcalibur to Glaive Rush Double KO. - As for Sango's, it was declared that she Lost her battle as the rule was the 1st pokemon knocked out either side loses, and Glalie knocked itself out First with Self-Destruct to knock out everyone else. - Onyx I sorta get why he lost: Onyx is a Soldier-Warrior. He wasn't going to sacrifice/let Tulip (his tag partner/backup~subordinate) be defeated so he & Garganacl took the hit for her which made them lose. If Onyx hadn't, he'd feel like it'd be disgraceful to him. He really is a Soldier with a Warrior's Honor & Pride. He might be my fav Explorer > Despite the outcome of the battle, Liko did a pretty good job in her battle!!!!! This tag battle definitely was the best of the 3 with Rika's consecutive attacks from Katy's unleashed battling with Lokix both supportive & offensive (got super surprised Swarm activated) & Liko's Floragato learning Acrobatics {Love she learned the move after being inspired by Lokix's battle movements & maybe from its Bounce attack!!!!} And if it's any consolation for Liko, She was the only one to make her Elite 4 get Serious enough to go Tera; that's saying something in comparison with the others. At least after crying, I'm glad Liko felt better afterwards. AND at long last, Liko has Finally Found it; Beyond the Battle- Liko has Finally found Her Drive ~ the joy in Serious Battling!!!!!!!!!! Our Girl's On her Way!!!!! She's finally found the joy in battling for real & it will make her stronger!!!!!

Capsule Monsters.

I must admit, I so want to believe in your "secret sauce" theories that have allowed this anime to thrive, but- In truth, even if Pokemon is adding these "secret sauces", I'm afraid that I just don't find the new cast of characters interesting or enjoyable. All of them could disappear by the next episode, and I'm afraid I wouldn't care.

im 3 episodes behind on 54. i do think its enjoyable but i dont think its amazing. I know its not meant to but it just doesnt feel like the pokemon i know most of the time. maybe because ive watched ash from childhood until he became world champion which was PEAK. first alola champion, world champion. it was surreal. I am not saying they needed to continue ash's story but imo it does not have the same pokemon magic. Like i said im enjoying the show and I think its cool but NOT amazing and since it doesnt come close to when ash was the main character it just doesnt feel that great watching it. I keep dropping it and them seeing youtubers praise it so I go back only for it to be the same watching expirience as before. again it just doesnt have that same pokemon magic without ash.

horizons is still trash removing ash was the biggest mistake they could've jus continued with him or at least involve him in the anime but he is completely unrelated in the anime story and its jus not the same , plus it being a girl as the main character even though its not gender equal a man as the MC is jus better in these type of anime as now it jus feels overly corny, like make it like the original series with a lot of humor

I always thought of Pokemon as being fantasy and 'a boy and his dog' (or Pikachu and the rest of the gang), not a sports story. But it is that, too. Gensaku effect- even for other stories, Harry Potter, Percy Jackson, Avatar the Last Airbender, etc, people are always comparing the movie/ TV show to the original works. Sun and Moon at least had Ash participating in the trials, then the tournament at the end. Journeys didn't have the traditional gyms either, but he at least was battling others, including gym leaders and elite four members, to get to a tournament at the end. I think your explanation matches my thoughts on the start of Horizons not being a start of a pokemon journey for a new trainer, but for Ash, since he has the experience to do that kind of quest. Liko and the rest need to go through a traditional journey first to get the skills to handle the big quest.

I'm still curious how long it'll take for Liko to have an official team of 6? We're nearly 60 episodes into the series and (assuming Terapagos counts as one) she only has a team of 3. I have no complaints with the Pokemon she has, I adore Floragato, Hattrem & Terapagos. I just wish she'd start building her team up more.

The another thing you forgot to mention is that Horizons focuses a lot more to it's characters than the "original" Pokémon animes did. Like Liko as a person had more character development in a single year than Ash had in the whole 26 years (maybe except the Indigo League and XYZ)

You forgot to mention some battles in Horizon got FINALLY some sakuga animation we've been missing since the days of XYZ. Only very few battles in Sun&Moon and Journeys had that (even if I'd personally like even more effects like 3D-camera to the battles). It's maybe not the pinnacle of anime fight eye candy (which I'm not even expecting), but it's still definitely a major upgrade to Ash's last 2 series.

Huh, I see, i personally was never bothered by the directions the Anime took previously, it was a nice change of pace, But I can understand where people are coming from, it’s going to be interesting to see how things goes from here, I just hope this doesn’t cause them to lean too heavily on this sauce.
