Fun thing my Uncle told me who is a retired Colonel in the Army is that once you reach a certain rank in the military (such as generals and admirals) you essentially become part of the central government decision making apparatus. So the concept that the Council and the High Command of the Rebel Alliance were peers isn't that far fetched.

Commanders always get the most fun positions, like leading Squadrons into battle and such, so that's my choice.

great video! to shed some light on Major Derlin being in charge of the base despite not being really high ranking, i served in the OPs branch of a military unit and our OPs officer was a major. he basically took care of day-to-day running of the unit. Also my unit was situated along with a couple others within a camp that had it's own OPs office(which was called camp commandant's office) and the camp commandant was also a major. The CCO was, once again, in charge of the day-to-day running of the camp itself, the logistical aspects, security etc. The camp's transport line, the regimental police, and the mess hall were all under the control of the CCO. So it makes perfect sense that Maj Derlin was in charge of the day-to-day running of echo base instead of the higher ranking officers who would have been COs of individual units such as the fighter wings etc.

As others have already pointed out, you have conflated Army and Navy ranks. Captain Antilles was NOT the same rank as Captain Cassian. Cassian would have been the equivalent of a Lieutenant in the Allince Navy. A Major would be equivolent to a Navy Lieutenant Commander.

Do you have any thoughts about the insignia Leia wears in ESB and RotJ? Or that Luke wears in ESB? Both of them in ESB seem to have squares across the top (more analogous to the Imperial rank insignia appearance), then other shapes on the rest of the insignia badge. Leia's badge in RotJ has different shapes around what *might* be 2 vertically-aligned blue circles in the middle.

Major, commanding a base would be pretty cool as they're in charge of resources, personnel and most of all defensive tactics which will be very anticipating to put into practise knowing full well the empire is usually capable of locating the bases.

Good video. I've always considered both the Imperial and the Alliance used rank structures similar to the modern military and navy. However, in the case of the Alliance theirs is more fluid. Junior officers wpuld probally have more authority only because of the scattered nature of Rebellion Cells. The Imperial force are more rigid with a strict hierarchy with junior officers having little if any real power.

I could have swore Bail Organa was second in command of the Alliance. He was there when Padmé got the Petition of the 2000 going which planted the seeds for the rebellion. And he's always there with Mon Mothma in meetings until Tarkin kills him with his wife and their people when Alderaan was blown to smithereens.

I wish when Star Wars was made they would have spent some basic time going over military ranks. Halo nails it, most other modern games/movies/shows/media get it completely wrong. It would have made much more sense if the Rebels had 2 main commands Navy and Army You have separate ranks in the Navy from that Army. For example a Naval Captain is an O-6 while in the Army he would be O-3. Then we get into the nuances of commands. A platoon commander/leader is not a Commander, but rather a Lieutenant. However in the Navy a Lt. might command a very small ship (tugboat or the like) and he would be addressed as Captain by his crew and during a ceremony. "The Captain of the USS Shit, Lt. Jimbob, lead his vessel meritoriously in combat..." However he would be addressed by others, while not affiliated with his ship, as Lt. Jimbob.

I like how half this video is footage with the resistance and not the rebellion even though this video is about the rebel alliance before the New Republic even got established after Endor pretty much.

One problem: At the end of The Empire Strikes Back, Lando is not apart or the Rebellion, and Han is a Captain, but by the Battle of Endor, Han jumps to General and Lando does too. Lando it is explainable, but Han was just rescued from Jabba, so did the Rebels just give him a field commission of almost 3 ranks? Unless you go by Navy ranks, which from this video we know, the rebellion didn't use, you can't explain how a Captain became a general in at most a couple of months

Yes but the rank of Captain for a Naval officer is equal to a COL. or the designation of Captain is give to the individual who commanders the ship. Therefore you could be called captain if you were a Commander if you are in command of the ship. An Admiral does not always command a ship but rather the fleet. Additionally the General word be in command of all rebel forces on Hoth, while COLS would command the Air Defense, ground Defense ETC. The Majors and Captains would command specific groups on the battlefield.

I definitely think Mon Mothma's position is like that of the United States president. The US President is typically a civilian, but is titled as Commander-in-Chief of the military and does have a role in grand military decisions, although the president relies on advice from official military personnel

Well if you look closely at the major's insignia in Empire it is actually opposite of what you said. Two dots below and one dot up, so the "major" in Empire is actually a commander.

I imagine mon mothma would have had the final Authority in all matters much in the same fashion as an executive political official in most governments. I do however doubt that she would because she was likely an elected official and as such it is important to work closely with your commanders in the interest of remaining a cohesive unit.

I actually think Commander might be a lower rank than Captain. There are two instances where this makes sense. In Rebels, Hera is a Captain and is regarded as the highest ranking officer in most field engagement. However, Ezra is a Lieutenant Commander. Does that mean he's a higher rank than Hera? In Empire Strikes Back, Han also has the rank of Captain, and Luke is a Commander. Han seems to be addressed as someone of higher authority than Luke.

The general seen piloting an x wing in rogue one, was likely a land based x wing commander, not one of a unit based out of a naval asset.

Love the channel and the videos but NCOs do most of the work on the ground. It's frustrating how in sci-fi/fantasy NCOs are underrepresented. As a company level NCO I've been in charge of 40+ Soldiers with minimal to no oversight. Not trying to be one of those "MWWELL ACTUALLY...." guys lol. Star Wars is what it is and we see all the Galaxy altering BIG shit that Officers would preside over. It's frustrating how still after so many wars, pop culture doesn't recognize the contribution to NCOs in general military command structure. I'm sure Vaders 501st had some bad ass NCOs that did all kinds of grimy shit for the empire but got no credit. Anyhow, has m a loyal subscriber and I love the content. I mean no disrespect. You've totally missed the "colors" Red is Army, Blue is Navy and Green is Intelligence. Also Commander is 90% Navy only where Major is 90% Army and Intelligence but do tend to jump branches some times Like Lando who is a General but also Gold leader on the attack on the Second Death Star and in Rouge one where "Blue Leader" Antoc Merrick also holds the rank of General.

there is a naval tradition of the commanding officer of a ship being called a captain whether or not they actually possessed that rank i.e. captain Solo. Captain Antilles may have just been the master of the vessel and not formally in the military.

My knowledge as far as star wars goes is obviously limited when compared to yours, however I do believe that it is possible that I could provide some sort of real world perspective regarding Mon Mothma. It is possible that she would be filling a position similar to the US chiefs of staff. Who are civilian leaders in charge of military branches. While they do not generally include themselves in the day to day operations, they are the largest say when it comes to actual policy. I've always seen her as filling a similar role for the rebels, anyone feel free to disagree with me or tell me why that is incorrect.

I am guessing those who went through any Imperial Academy and defected were given Officer ranks, since that was an Officer Candidate School. Just like real life. Military Academies such as West Point or the Citadel are one of the only ways you can be commissioned as an Officer in the Real World. I am sure it is pretty much the same in Star Wars, though for the Rebels, it must be based on Experience.
