This song has been played over 4 million times on radio . Was a huge hit at the time. I think the most impressive thing about it is that they were all very young (20, 20, 19 and 17) when it came out. Besides Paul Rodgers being one of the greatest singers of all time I'm surprised you guys didn't mention the solo. Paul Kossoff used to build these great solos with fantastic vibrato and tone. When Free opened for Blind Faith on their American tour in 1969, Clapton asked Kossoff to show him how he got such great vibrato. Great Praise indeed. Try listening to Mr. Big, Fire & Water and Wishing Well from Free. They were only a one hit wonder in the US. They were huge in the UK.

The higher pitched clicking sound that you thought was a cowbell is actually a pair of claves. Basically, two wooden dowels about an inch thick. One is held in one hand so that the hand creates a hollow just below the dowel and the other dowel is used to strike the first, giving a bright, high pitched clicking sound. You'll find them most often in Latin and Cuban music where they form part of the rhythm section. A cowbell is more resonant and has a much more metallic sound by comparison.

Guys, this was Free's one big radio hit in the U.S. (they were British), but they were a very respected bluesy hard-rock band in their time. Their three signature elements were Paul Rodgers' powerful singing, Paul Kossoff's stinging, raunchy, skronky Les Paul guitar tone, and the fact that many of their songs had that deliberate, restrained, "walking" blues pace (kids today would call it "slow"). Another good Free song for you to try is "Fire and Water", and then certainly go on to Paul Rodgers' next band, Bad Company, and their first, smash, hit, "Can't Get Enough". Cheers.

@M 40 Agree. That middle section with the great bass, the piano, the guitar building up -- it does a great job of raising the tension, but then fails (in my opinion) to capitalize on it. Considering that this song came out 50 years ago, it sounds damn good today. It's hard to know which songs will still sound timeless and which ones will get dated. Consider "In a gadda da vida" which came out only one year before this song, but was dated by 1975 (I know because that's when I first heard it.) And is no one going to comment on that hilarious line "let's move before they raise the parking rate?"

Sorry dude, but there were only 3 lead guitarists in the band for the song, 'Green Grass and High Tides'. They were Hughie Thomasson - guitars, vocals(Died 2007,Heart Attack), Henry Paul - guitars, vocals and Billy Jones - guitars, keyboards, vocals(Died 1995,suicide), may they rest in peace. Hughie was the main soul of the band and the best guitarist. Hughie was nicknamed "The Flame" for his flaming fast guitar work and he is a member of the Fender Hall of Fame. In 1996 he along with Ricky Medlocke (an original Lynyrd Skynyrd band member before they got signed) and founder of the band, 'Blackfoot', joined and toured with Lynyrd Skynyrd for several years. Now that being said I completely agree with you about the song Green Grass and High Tides. It is a absolute bomb of a song and in my world the 2nd best rock guitar song ever written and played. The number 1 rock guitar song ever is Lynyrd Skynyrd's Freebird and the number 3 best guitar rock song ever was Ricky Medlocke's band Blackfoot's song 'Highway Song'. All three songs feature 3 great rock guitarists jamming like no other for the last 1/3 of each song in 3 part harmony. Totally hard core rock overdrive great guitar screaming arias. So Andy & Alex, when are going to do as these members of your youtube channel request and do all 3 of these songs. I think you might have done Freebird but you for sure have not done the other 2 songs. Webu reacts is the only music reaction channel that has done all three to date. So get with it boys because these 3 songs are 11's and tier 'S' entries. Kim Hellums

I'm fairly sure that this is a extended version, and that the original doesn't repeat the last verse. This is one of the greatest rock band ever. All of them are one of the best at their instrument. And the songwriter partnership between Paul Rodgers (vocals) and Andy Frasier (bass)were exeptional. There's no bad Free song. Listen to i.a. Ride On Pony, The Stealer, Wishing Well, Fire and Water, Mr Big or the live cover of The Hunter.

When Free formed, all the members were between 15 and 18 years old, so the "maturity" to reign themselves in may not have been very well developed yet. The vocalist, Paul Rodgers, is held in high regard. Many consider him to be the best ever. They have a pretty strong argument, I'd say. Him and drummer Simon Kirke went on to form super group Bad Company, along with Mick Ralphs on guitar (from Mott The Hoople) and Boz Burrell on bass (from King Crimson). Extremely popular in the mid to late seventies. I don't think Free ever caught on very big in the US, besides this song. Maybe bigger in the UK? I couldn't vouch for either of those statements; just going on my own knowledge of them, which is pretty damn thin. What I do know is that this song has been a radio staple since I was an adolescent. It's a part of my DNA. I'll always enjoy listening to it. Bad Company is an obvious jump from here. Maybe even a little Mott The Hoople? Tragically overlooked in the reaction world. I'm not sure if you would find a whole lotta Free that would excite you. They were good, no doubt. But maybe more of a Bad Company footnote. Maybe not, though. My entire Free collection consists of the compilation "Completely Free". Twelve of their best known songs. And I'm good with that.
