I recommend "The Immortality Key: The Secret History of the Religion with No Name" by Brian Muraresku to everyone. It blew my mind. I also just read "Misquoting Jesus" by Bart Ehrman, which was a short book about the science-based study of the history of the New Testament, which was super interesting and has me interested in more of his books.

Otherlands by Thomas Halliday. He takes us on a journey through time all the way back to the Cambrian era, and each chapter/"stop" in time is in a different place around the world. He talks about climate cycles, fauna, flora, life, different species and how everything is connected. Highly recommend.

Natives: Race and Class in the Ruins of Empire by Akala (about British History) I also re-read Catch and Kill by Ronan Farrow (trigger warning for assault and r*ape; it's about how Harvey weinstein and others were able to cover up all their shit for so long). There is also a podcast linked to it if you want to hear the people involved.

i love how emily is so unapologetically bold and honest and doesn't give af about possibly turning off parts of her audience by reviewing "controversial" (AKA important) books that shine a light on topics that are often ignored and rarely spoken about. this is why i love this channel so much. ❤❤❤

I 100% agree. Non-fiction is by far the best genre to listen to on audiobook! It is my preferred genre when picking audiobooks. I'm currently reading Empire of Pain and it's actually so well done. It's not just the story about the story of the drug crisis but a deep dive into the family as well. It's intriguing! I'm about 6 hours in right now. The author narrates it and he does a good job. Thanks for showing the Ace book!! I am Ace and always eager to see people reading on the topic. Great video :)

Emily giving the people what we want as usual - more of these videos on non fiction please! I read radium girls by your recommendation and that one was so good. Empire of Pain is both fascinating - like I couldn't put it down its very interesting but terrifying at the same time. I need to do more non fiction for next year I have slacked in that category. I have read 8. I have so many I want to get too but the old conundrum of so little time so many books!

i remember discovering your channel through your fantasy genre videos and then realizing how many other genres you tend to have videos on with very interesting, bold takes. i remember subscribing years ago because outside of fantasy, a genre we shared interest in, i loved the way you could make me interested in a bunch of other genres too, even the ones i personally found most intimidating (sci-fi and nonfiction being top2). gotta tell you that i never regretted my choice to sub to you because throughout the years i've found myself enjoying all your content, watching them even when you cover stuff i usually wouldn't go for as a reading choice. i just sat here for over 38 minutes completely immersed in you talking about nonfiction books and you made me want to read so many of them, and even the ones i wouldn't read i still enjoyed your commentary on so so much. i just wanted you to know that this video was super interesting and your channel is one of the ones i recommend the most to all my friends. keep up the awesome work!

Hi Emily, great video. Two audio books that I recommend are Born with Teeth and How to Forget: a Daughter's Memoir by Kate Mullgrew. Her prose is sharp witty and moving.

But I have to recommend Savage Appetites by Rachel Monroe - just finished it and really enjoyed it!! It looks at true crime and society's obsession through the lens of four diff women who assumed four diff roles relating to real true crime cases and how it affected their lives. I found the stories really engaging and actually felt like I was able to pay attention and learn stuff! Lol😅

Thank you for a GREAT list of Non fiction Books Emily. Some of these are now on my TBR. I have had SALT on my TBR for several years but never read it. Currently reading the Radium Girls for Non Fiction November. I have 2 days to finish it!! Oh yes and I also have PCOS and had trouble staying pregnant. I was only able to carry one child to full term. (the other pregnancies all ended in miscarriages). My son is now 20 years old!! I certainly do sympathise with your health issues. Regarding Misogyny in healthcare, my sister died because of male Misogyny. She had headaches for several weeks. She was a nurse and she knew the difference between a regular headache, and a migraine and this pain was different!! But the doctors kept telling her its was just a migraine, take some paractomol (what we call tylenol) and it will go away. The pain did not go away. Instead it got worse. The doctor finally made an appointment for my sister to get a CT Scan. But she died 2 days before the appointment. She was only 32 Years, with 3 young children. 12 years later a cyst showed up in my brain CT scan (after I slipped and fell on ice and was knocked unconcious). Several years later, when my own headache symptoms slowly began, I demanded to see a neurologist. When I gave him a copy of my sisters death certificate, he agreed that I must have surgery, and I had brain surgery within 12 months. At no cost to me, thanks to Canada's universal health care!! I am now 15 years post op with no issues at all.

Hi Emily, I've read 22 nonfiction books this year, and there are a few that have really stayed with me: 1. Breath, James Nestor (Health) 2. Unbound, Tarana Burke (Intersectionality: Race & Gender) 3. White Fragility, Robin DiAngelo (Race) 4. The Hundred Years' War on Palestine, Rashid Khalidi (History) 5. The Inner Life of Animals, Peter Wohlleben (Nature > Animals) I also enjoyed 'Ace', 'Sex Matters', and 'Unwell Women, but I read those on your recommendation! The books listed above were all very good! But my absolute favourite nonfiction this year was Lee Maracle's, 'My Conversations with Canadians'. It was amazing. Maracle is amazing! I don’t know if you like bookish podcasts but if you do, I must recommend The Stacks! Several of the books and authors you mention in this video have been guests; Cultish, Disordered Cosmos, What Doesn’t Kill You, What my bones know, Empire of pain… The host Traci Thomas is super smart and witty but not one bit of a snob. It’s more conversational than “high brow” literature. @@BookswithEmilyFox So is Moby Dick, War and Peace and Bleak House. I think every genre has its intimidating side. Like, I’m on book 6 out of 15 on The Wheel of Time series. To one of my friends that’s amazing to him because he’s been trying and failing to read that series for years because of how long-winded it is and I’m just gliding on by like it’s nothing. I think it’s really because nonfiction gave me practice on long winded stories, 😂 Gotta ease into it. Like you should absolutely not start off reading that 900 paged book on George Washington by Ron Chernow. Gotta start with relatively short memoirs and then anything weird that looks interesting. Like Stealing Lincoln’s Body by Thomas J. Craughwell or The Family That Couldn’t Sleep by D. T. Max. Eventually they’ll get less intimidating.

I would actually disagree with her on the book. The author frequently agrees with her point that there’s not extensive research on a lot of the points she makes, like the data re:dating, and emphasized how much research is weak on a lot of the potential effects. I was wary the entire book about this being an attempt by someone to undermine the pill, but she does talk about how important the pill has been to women being able to make their own choices and lives. I would recommend getting it from the library and reading it with both eyes open.

I appreciate you ability to thoughtfully critique books and look deeper into them when something doesn't feel right. It makes me respect you and your taste a lot. It's a shame about that birth control book; as someone who has been on birth control since I was 14 for medical reasons (ovarian cysts and period cramps so bad that I fainted in a school hallway at one point) I think the potential negative side effects are often ignored and I wish the book had been more scientific and compassionate instead of agenda-driven. Books like it make it hard to talk about the topic in general since you have people who are against any kind of birth control whatsoever for ideological reasons trying to hijack what should be a serious conversation about healthcare. People who may be considering birth control should have realistic information about the potential benefits and negative side effects of it instead of religiously-motivated fear mongering by someone who thinks the correct scientific terms for their anatomy sound "ugly".

I'm not very into nonfiction, so i just decided to watch the video just because it's here, but i ended up adding 5 books to my to-read-list, thanks for great recommendations. Also i saw a cover of islands of abandonment and was like huh, i know this place. And indeed, i assume this is the Tunnel of Love, and it's not abandoned, it's a fully functioning railroad through the forest 😅

I think A Taste for Poison is the only nonfiction I've read this year (after seeing you talk about it) but I really enjoyed it. I've got a few more nonfiction books on my tbr but have been very bad at getting round to reading them! Also I've been on the waiting list for Atomic Habits for literally four months already and still have to wait another three 🤣

Pop off Emily I love this. I’ve been told I have anxiety then oops I’d guess who has ankylosing spondylitis… literally have chronic arthritis and they wanted to put me on antidepressants when I have cPTSD. I’m on my own trying to heal myself because I can’t doctor myself through physicians anymore.

Hi! I think you may find interesting a non-fiction book originally written in swedish (yet to be translated into english), available and translated into french. It's called "Vies de Samis. Les déplacements forcés des éleveurs de rennes" by Elin Anna Labba. It's about the deportations of sami people about a hundred years ago. Both sad and relevant. I hope it sounds interesting. That's my rec. 😊

Thank you for the recommendation of A taste for Poison, just finished it and it was really good!!! Not sure if you read any Naomi Klein books, but I find them really good, easily readable and I think the subjects would interest you. The best one in my opinion: This changed everything Have a good day!

Oh my so many books to recommend! I see you have I Contain Multitudes by Ed Yung. I loved that book. Highly recommend. A memoir I would recommend is Know My Name by Chanel Miller. Social justice book I recommend is Just Mercy by Bryan Stevenson. A fun and disgusting book to read is The Royal Art of Poison by Eleanor Herman. A graphic memoir that I thoroughly enjoyed is Good Talk by Mira Jacob. If you want to read about climate change or how we are bringing on the next extinction I recommend Under A White Sky and The Sixth Extinction by Elizabeth Kolbert. I also enjoyed Born A Crime by Trevor Noah. I could go on and on but I will stop here. 😂 Thanks for sharing what you read. I am always looking for more NF books to read.

I skipped on Ask me about my uterus because it hits too close to home. It took me 15 years to receive a diagnosis of deeply infiltrating endometriosis. After already being put on psychiatric medication because I'm "imagining" it. I am in therapy, working to heal hospital related trauma, but I can say this book is not great if you're in the middle of a crisis. I would absolutely recommend it to everyone else though, just to raise awareness on what women go through.

I just read one this year (got to say that i only read 14 books this year) and is about forensics "Corpse: Nature, Forensics, and the Struggle to Pinpoint Time of Death" by Jessica Snyder Sachs. I loved it but i'm also bias, i love forensics and which i could work in the subject. Is about the difficulty of stablishing a time of death and how many sciences were added through time: initially started with only the medics through pathologists and with time and cases and problems anthropology, entomology, botany and now more sciences were added. A big chunk is dedicated to forensic entomology, which i like since i'm an entomologist (forest and agriculture pests) but if is not your thing, yah, don't read it.

Libby apps are great. Shout out the Toronto Library, as I can take out 50 books at a time, put 100 on hold, and also use Libby and get more books. I noticed that getting physical copies is faster than ebooks, which is fine because I find I need a physical book to read non-fiction.
